These are just a few of the activities and community artmaking planned for Artist as Citizen at Berkeley City College, 1/22-5/21. (CA Community College fees are a bargain?at $46 a unit. Early-bird tickets to Bioneers are $400, or free with our Artist as Citizen student scholarship.)

In the wake of the results of the presidential election you may feel anxiety like me. The action-oriented, racially diverse,?multigenerational community?created in this class may be exactly what you need to resist the chaos that may be coming in 2025, and to support your own creative positive actions and self-care.

ARTIST AS CITIZEN:

Introduction to Community-based Art Practices

Spring Semester 2025, Berkeley City College

ART 181?(20429/20430),?3 units, Monday & Wednesdays, 1:30-4:20pm,?1/22-5/21, Studio #413

Together we will make and learn about the history and theory of community-based art,?

relational art, and social practice art, and learn to write project proposals to fund your work.?

We will study creative strategies for problem solving, engage in collaborative creative projects, and experience art as a vehicle for transformation and social change.

This is a fun, hands-on class, where we work together!

No prior art or community experience necessary.

?

We will be making art together in our studio and out in our community, have visits from three local guest artists, go on field trips in the East Bay and San Francisco, and work creatively with local arts, social service, and environmental organizations. Exciting field trips include a visit to?

San Quentin Prison Arts Project, Bioneers Conference (with?free student your scholarships!),

Creative Growth Art Center,?and?Recology (SF Dump) Artist in Residence Program.
