I haven’t received a message from this group in quite sometime. Is everyone ok? No iPhone problems?
?
Anyone keeping up with the development of iOS 18? Is anyone interested in what AI will be bringing to the iPhone?

Actually, I would rather that Apple not get involved with AI or at least not release it to the public right now.?

I’m looking forward to trying iOS 18, but haven’t read as much about it as I should. ?The ability of AI to assist in writing should be interesting.

Hi Alice, It’s just been very quiet for a couple of weeks. Maybe the Olympics? Quite often these groups are all about problems. If people aren’t having any, perhaps that’s good? Do you know the website? I often check there in case I’ve missed something. < /g/AppleiPhone/messages> Otto

Brent, any particular reason you don’t want Apple getting into AI? I can see where AI can be bad. In the case of writing, it makes it so one doesn’t need to learn sentence structure or even have writing skills. AI can do it all for you.

The reason I am opposed falls on two reasons. Too much possibility for bad acts.?
The second is that people have a bad habit of using it as an aggregate search engine, without fact checking, and using trends instead of facts. It does not check the results against known facts or logic. It then publishes the results to the web, corrupting or polluting the pool of information. Basically, shitting in it own drinking water, making the next use of AI even more corrupt or in error. This continuous corruption is then repeated by both AI and people. This is just like climate change or animal extinction. Little acts that compound bad results.?
People used to think the internet was a godsend, instead it has created at least one generation that cannot think for themselves. I see AI, without severe restrictions, as the downfall if the internet.?
This may sound like science fiction, but how many sci-fi predictions have come true???

Two additions.?
Change bad acts to serious bad acts.?
And not only does published AI corrupt the source for future AI searches, but for future non-AI searches.?

AI should not have been released to the public. It should have been left in secure research labs. It is not ready for public release, and maybe never.?

I generally agree with Brent. AI is not ready for prime time. One of my personal aphorisms (Davisms) is that software can't do your job for you, you have to know what you're doing.
?
I have a warped sense of humor and a penchant for irony. While I may be wrong--in which case I will apologize--I think Brent uses voice-to-text for his posts. Voice-to-text is fundamentally AI. It demonstrates the failings of AI wonderfully and yet Brent has fallen into its use. That does not take away from the validity of his points.
?
I think that Apple should keep up with and where possible push the boundaries of technology and science. That includes AI. I think rolling out capabilities that aren't in fact very capable is not good business. The customer base should not be beta testers.
?
In the end "you have to know what you're doing." I certainly embrace the little blue (grammar) and red (spelling) squiggly lines that nudge me in the right direction when writing. I'm happy for the availability of Google and other search engines for research. I'm thrilled by Google Scholar for access to meaningful, mostly peer-reviewed and prepub material. I have to go to the library for Lexus-Nexus but I can get Google Scholar sitting at me desk at home (in my underwear). AI is working its way into search engines.
?
You still have to know what you are doing. You have to sort the wheat from the chaff. It helps to be a polymath. *grin* AI still conflates commonality of belief with fact and opinion with fact. Maybe that will improve. I hope so, but for now you shouldn't count on it. I think Brent and I agree on that.
?
Do not confuse your or other's vision of the future and potential with the current reality. AI is not all that good yet. What is sad is that for many people what AI produces IS better than what they can. The movie Wall-E comes to mind. Do better. Be better.
?

As was said in previous conversations about AI in this group, AIs tend to create stories. (Perhaps it was even you who said that?). If you ask facts from an AI you don’t know whether it’s telling a story or finding the facts you want. They can help find facts, but you had better ask for the references it used and double check them yourself. To confuse things even more, they can mix some facts in with a story. That makes it all the more critical to double check references, as often those references don’t say what the AI claimed. If you discover that the AI was story telling when it should have been fact finding, then you should correct the AI. I don’t use one very often, but I do the above when I am looking for facts.

The movie Galaxy Quest comes to mind. Extra terrestrials located “archives” of life on earth. It consisted of movies/tv episodes that somehow survived. What unleashed AI can create, and the false “reality” that it can project to the future, based on possible multiple iterations scares me. GIGO is still true.

I want an *analytic* AI (as opposed to a *creative* one) – that can tell me whether an image I am looking at or an article I am reading was generated by a human or by a “machine intelligence”…
