Oscillation Fixed
3
All, As you may remember, my T41 has been oscillating on all frequencies above 20M. Today, I replaced U8, the first analog switch in the receive path on the K9HZ LPF card. Problem solved, no more oscillation. To get access to U8, I removed all four antenna relays. When I put it back together, I installed only one of them - because I only use it with one antenna. Luckily, the needed antenna relay is the farthest one from U8. So the next time it pops, I should be able to replace it without removing any relay. I'm not the only person who has fried U8. Why does it break? I can only guess that somehow, Big RF got into the receive input. Sure would be nice if I could protect it somehow.... - Jerry, KF6VB

Display Advice

After a year of emergencies, I am back at trying to put together a T-41. I purchased the following display from BuyDisplay.com, but do not know if it will work with the T-41. Also, I got the new Display Driver from Bill and don't know if I need that for this device. Any direction or advice will be greatly appreciated. I search for the data sheet on BuyDisplay's website, but only found different models. I wrote them, hopefully they will reply. Thanks in advance. K9HZ/KI3P attenuator assembly instructions link error?
3
Great work on the kit package with the qr code label. It looks fantastic. It looks like the assembly manual on github that the qr code on the kit package links to is the wrong document. I think you have the instructions for your power delivery module with just a picture of the attenuator board. To be fair, the board looks easy enough that one can paint by numbers. I am not going to get to assembling this one for a bit but I'm sure someone will be looking for the instructions soon. https://github.com/DRWJSCHMIDT/K9HZ_KI3P/blob/main/K9HZ_KI3P_20W_40db_Attenuator/K9HZ_KI3P_20W_40db_Attenuator_Assembly_040925.pdf

New book

ALL: Has anyone received a copy of the new T41 book? The new version supposedly became available after April 4th and has a black T41 on the cover and Appendix C on Calibration has been expanded to a new chapter (#20). If so, please let me know, as I have ordered review copies for Al and myself twice now, and they have sent the old pre-April 4th version. Thanks! Jack, W8TEE -- Jack, W8TEE

More boards and kits info...
For those of you that ordered T41 board sets with the MAIN board in the set (A Full set of V12 boards, or an Upgrade set of $1 V12 boards), You got a pre-programmed ATTiny85 just like usual with the set purchase. HOWEVER, I may have put the part(s) in one of your other packages due to room constraints. Don*t just throw the packing away without doing an inventory! If you ordered a 20W PA kit# remember to carefully remove the inner package from the pink bubble-wrap envelope# and the CAREFULLY slit the two recipe cards apart at the edge (slit the tape, don*t cut the cards!). When you open the two cards# the parts are facing each other# and you can cut the cards apart then to keep the part numbers with the parts# easier to ID!. Do NOT remove the parts from the cards before you are ready to use them# and the do so individually. The FET and the Transistor look alike! I have only 3 more packages to wrap up and send. One is a large order in the USA and I*ll get that one done tonight. One is for an RF board that I promised to mount the PE4302 parts for him (this is NOT a usual service at the moment). The last one is an invoice I sent out and have not been paid. Please note that I will cease taking orders as of the end of next week to allow time for some traveling and then attending FDIM and Hamvention. Dr. William J. Update
Just a note on boards and kits# I*m a little behind on getting the latest round of boards and kits out. The response in the last few weeks was so overwhelming that I needed to stop shipping on multiple occasions and put together more kits. Just yesterday I put together another 25 20W PA kits that took me the majority of the day. Most of the orders that did not include the PA kit have been shipped and you should be able to track it with the number that got sent to you. Those orders with the 20W PA I*m working on today and I should have them all sent. I have two larger orders# one for over-seas and one USA that I will need to get boxes from the postal service to ship. That will happen Monday. My goal is to get everything out the door by Monday. I*m also gearing up for FDIM and Hamvention so I*ll see a lot of you there# we are inside this year# Building#4 (where you drop off your ticket stubs for the prizes) in spot #4111. More on this later and what I will be bringing. I*ve talked to Al and he will be at our booth on a couple of days with a T41 operating and able to sign books and answer questions. Dr. William J. [SoftwareControlledHamRadio] The T41 from 4SQRP and V11 boards.
Hi Harry, Thanks for the note. I just checked my records and I sold a total of 218 full sets of V10/V11 boards (plus odds and ends of full sets). But that was two plus years ago. I may still have sets of V10/V11 bare boards in the recycle box# I*ll dig around to see if I can find some for you because the demand for the V10/V11 sets has dried up as of the V12 release. In any case, the GERBERS for the V10 and V11 boards are all available at no cost on my GITHUB. The 4SQRP boards (+GERBERS) are not available to me so I can*t support them as of now. Beyond that, I*ve sold 1,200+ sets of V12, and 150+ in stock that I will sell at Hamvention in about a month. Last year I sold 200 sets at FDIM and HamVention alone in just 4 days, and I expect to do that and more this year, since I now have an inside booth (4111 for those who will attend). I will take paper orders if I run out (I expect that will happen because I only have so much space in my luggage). I will also be selling the latest T41 book (signed copies) from Jack and Al at Hamvention in my booth (NOT at FDIM where Jack and Al will be selling the book). I won*t be able to support older versions of the T41 past free GERBERS and documentation. The cost of doing so is prohibitive. I have thousands of US dollars tied up in parts and boards# and can only support so much. I don*t know if Greg supplies boards for your V10/V11 projects or not# I don*t really follow what he does (and hence can*t/ don*t/ won*t comment on it). I do see some new directions on the horizon for the T41 after V12. The RF performance is outstanding# now to supercharge the user interfaces and the I/Q processing parts. Dr. William J. Attenuator problem

V12.6 RF board. 'Menu/RF Set/RF in Atten' works fine, I get the appropriate 3.3v at pins 21 - 26 as adjustments are made. But 'RF Out Atten' doesn't work the same. I don't see any voltage on pins 1 - 6 as adjustments are made. What am I missing?

T41-EP V12 Board Connections and Development of the VHF-UHF Board
4
Dr. Bill and Oliver, Al and Jack could not have found a more capable pair to take the T41-EP project over the horizion into what we will find in the infinite Experimentation Beyond. I have searched but have not found a board interconnection diagram that shows how the VHF/UHF board is proposed to connect. It seems like I have run across that but I need some guidance to find it. ..jpw J P Watters KC9KKO Morris, IL USA

introduction
4
Hi everyone. Just getting started with this amazing group and I wanted to write a quick note of introduction. I have long been a kit builder and tinkerer with electronics. My first real success was a Wilderness Sierra that I built back in 1996. I've been hooked ever since. For the past year or so I have been running a Hermes Lite with Thetis and have been totally amazed by what it can do. I have absolutely no formal electronics knowledge and have always just figured stuff out at my own pace. I am really looking forward to building the T41 modules, learning about SDTs and getting to know the folks in this community. I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If there is anyone near me that is a part of this group and would be interested in gathering for a meet up to talk shop and compare notes, let me know by emailing me directly, off the forum. Thanks to everyone who makes this amazing learning opportunity and community possible. 73 David Dill W0NP dsdill@...

U8 test
8
Hello all, My T41 has been oscillating on bands higher than 20M. I think others have traced a similar problem to U8, the first analog switch in the receive path on the K9HZ LPF control card. I just looked at the card - U8 is going to be a challenging chip to replace, and it would be nice to test things first, and not replace it if it doesn't need it. Can anybody supply details of such a test? I have a decent SA with tracking generator. - Jerry, KF6VB

[SoftwareControlledHamRadio] T41 V12 software development path forward
6
All: I agree with everything Oliver has stated here. I should have done a better job of structuring the code from the outset, but at the start, it was just Al and I working on the T41, and we were anxious to see if we could just get it to work. Over time, the T41 Project morphed into a much bigger project than we ever envisioned to the point where we have 3200+ people following its development. The early design mistakes I made are coming home to "byte" me in the butt. The display is a nettlesome issue and it's puzzling to me that some people have issues and others don't. The good news is that Oliver is masterful at both the hardware and software points. Anyway, Oliver's restructuring idea is a good one. If this is something you haven't wrangled with before, just search "hardware abstraction layer" (HAL) to read about it. Both Al and I still plan to be active in the Project, albeit less than in the past. (Last night, for the first time since Field Day last year, I spent over an hour actually playing radio...I still enjoy it after 70 years of operating and plan to be more active now!) We also have some small projects we'd like to mess around with. We hope everyone will continue to support the T41 Project going forward. Jack, W8TEE On Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 08:12:17 AM EDT, Oliver KI3P via groups.io <oliver@...> wrote: As Jack mentioned in a recent post, I've accepted the weighty responsibility for maintaining the code for the T21 V12 radio. I've learned so much by participating in the T41 project, I'm happy to help keep this project going so others can get as much enjoyment and knowledge as I have. Here's how we're going to manage the code. Jack and Al have written a fourth and final edition of their book describing the T41 theory and operation of the T41 radio. We will maintain Version 66-9 of the code on GitHub in a state that reflects the book so that anyone buying the book in the future can download code that corresponds to the structure and features described in the book. We'll fix bugs, but not add any new features to this code. It will live here: https://github.com/KI3P/SDTVer066-9 New features and changes to the code will be hosted in a new repository on GitHub: https://github.com/KI3P/T41-V12-SDT At the moment these two repositories are identical (other than a change in the name of the sketch). Expect them to diverge over time. So what comes next? A lot of discussion in this forum over the last few years has centered around the display and the need to restructure or reformat the code to make it easier to change this code. Similarly, the changes to the hardware between V11 and V12 necessitated making many changes sprinkled through the code base. Updating the code to accommodate changing hardware becomes very challenging. Both of these issues are derived the same root cause: the software is not structured in a way that abstracts the hardware implementation. Before leaping into any major feature upgrades, I think that restructuring the code to make it more modular and hardware-portable would be a good idea. So I'm thinking a lot about how the software works and what a different architecture might look like. -- Jack, W8TEE

Some how when I use the audio hat extension board it causes issues, If I plug audio hat direct into main board no boot issues. I ohmed out the traces on on extension board and all seem fine, so not sure but I can go on with calibration and working on optimizing rf cable lengths and ends. Odd thing is I never had issue with previous builds, I tried previous build and got same result so I suspected hardware. Good thing is I have plenty of room for audio hat extension is not needed. [SoftwareControlledHamRadio] T41 Hardware Directions
3
All: Obviously I agree since I suggested to Al that Bill take the hardware over, to which he was in total agreement. Same for Oliver on the software track: both were done in consultation. In the future, I, too, would like to remove the Audio Hat and move it to the Main board. I would like to see the ADC/DAC's mounted over a small hole in the PCB, since mounting those has been troublesome in the past. Placing the SPI driver on the board makes sense. I don't know enough about the LT3045's to judge, but while they are relatively expensive (~$9), a quantity 10 purchase, however, drops the price by almost 25%, so some kind of sharing might be possible. The ones I saw are rated at 500mA, so I'm guessing more than one is needed but I don't know. I think most of us would plunk down an extra $20 if it results in a more quiet rig. I have mentioned to Bill and Oliver that I would like to see a small PCB hold the 4 connectors (mic, PTT, headphones, and key) just because the current direct wiring makes the front look like a rat's nest. It's purely aesthetics for me and something most people will never see. On the software side, I would love to take the time to cut down the globals in the code. It will make some things a little slower (noticeable??), but it would address Greg's complaint about the limited stack/heap space. My guess is that it would also make debugging easier, too. It would be super cool if the Arduino people noticed that the newer processors now have some serious code space with significantly faster clocks and that might permit a mini OS kernel that would support a symbolic debugger. Alas, that's probably not going to happen until the Arduino family get a significant boost in memory. Anyway, I think Bill and Oliver will take the T41 Project to even higher performance levels than it enjoys now. And a big thanks to all the members of these groups who have helped along the way! Jack, W8TEE On Sunday, April 13, 2025 at 12:18:50 PM EDT, K9HZ <bill@...> wrote: Like Oliver on the Software side, I have graciously been handed the hardware side of the T41 development moving forward. (Just my take with this next statement) The software side is easier to experiment with# basically because its easier to ※roll it back§ if the experiment fails. To that end it requires more discussion and engineering calculation on the hardware side to make measurable steps forward. I do have a stable of engineers that work for me# but they are not here to work on the T41 project (unless they do it off-hours). To that end, I will start permanent ※hashtag§ sub-groups in the AmateurRadioBuilders when there is a growing interest in any aspect of the T41 hardware to address and discuss. There will be some changes to the building process tools I want to announce today. I will begin to stock solder masks shortly# something I have not done in the past. I originally considered stocking solder masks and ※renting them out§ for reuse. But after understanding that the SHIPPING for return would cost about the same as purchasing a mask outright# I will simply sell them outright. Then you can share them on a local/ club level. I*ve shipped about 50 of the display driver hardware devices. I have about 150 more in stock and then I will restock. Eventually, this hardware can be moved to the main board if there is an update. Remember, there is a difference between the T41 hardware and my K9HZ, and the K9HZ/KI3P hardware projects that we may or may not allow group think due to the fact that there may be external requirements that you are not aware of (e.g. the 100W PA module, the VHF/UHF Module, ETC.). Here are a few hardware things I am thinking about for the existing T41 boards. If we update the main board to a 12.7 at some point, I think we should consider placing the hardware from the audio hat directly on the main board. I would also put the SPI display driver on the board# a pair of ultra-low noise references for the A/D and D/A as needed, and possibly update the linear regulators with ultra noise LT3045 (etc.) devices. Maybe splitting the A/Ds and D/As to a separ
