A subtle but good point Gerry. Total Indicator Runout vs. Total Indicated Runout. I like your version, which is probably correct. I had likely heard the not quite right version years ago and it stuck.

I purchased the 5" 4 jaw chuck with adaptor from LMS to turn larger square aluminum blocks and rounds for small crankcases. I have noticed more chatter with that chuck when turning steel... Steve

It can be a bit confusing at first, but you'll soon pick them up. A few common ones used here and elsewhere: TIR, which has already been explained HS or H/S for headstock and TS or T/S for tailstock.
