Re: Abbreviations

A subtle but good point Gerry. Total Indicator Runout vs. Total Indicated
Runout. I like your version, which is probably correct. I had likely heard
the not quite right version years ago and it stuck.

My version sounds like the runout comes from the indicator, yours points the
blame squarely at the thing with the runout.

To muddy the waters a tad, in my googling about I noticed Total Indicator
Reading. which
mentions Total Indicated Runout, but sadly for me does not mention Total
Indicator Runout.

Hi Andy,

as with any specialist subject machines have their own jargon? and
abbreviations that get used in those circles but trust me it does get
learned fairly quickly!

TIR stands for (in machining terms) total indicated run-out and is a measure
of how far out of true or being circular a rotating piece is, be it the
lathe spindle, chuck or a part mounted on the lathe. It it is generally
measured with a DI (Dial Indicator) or DTI ( Dial test indicator).

You should try to learn and use the jargon but if you get stuck shout up and
someone will help

Hi All,

Would it be possible for abbreviations to not be used? As this is a
forum for old timers and newbies, there are many of us who don¡¯t know
what these abbreviations stand for. It doesn¡¯t take more than a few
seconds to type the full name, and it would help greatly in
understanding what you¡¯re talking about.

Many thanks,

John,

Great advice, but I offer a slight modification¡¡..

Remove the chuck and check the arbor runout on the internal taper.
I¡¯ve never been happy with the chuck mounting on those three studs, as
it gets a new TIR every time you mount the chuck.

If I remember correctly, my 7x14 (from Micromark) gets better than
0.0005 TIR. I¡¯ll try to re-check it later today.

Not sure how much run time you have on your lathe.

Check the front spindle bearing by placing a piece of board on the ways
under the chuck (protection)

Put a piece of bar under the chuck and with a dial indicator and the
stylus sitting on the top of the chuck, see how much lift you are
getting.

you maybe using the deep groove bearings as fitted standard to the
lathe, maybe change to tapered roller bearings.

At least you then can eliminate on of the variables, also check the 4
bolts pulling down the headstock are tight.

Is the tool properly shaped for brass? Brass needs 0 top rake; if
there's any top rake the tool will try to pull into the work.

only tapers even if I take off say .005 on a side as for rpm I don't
know I have no spindle tach. I tried speeding up the spindle got worse.
