Re: fine finishes

The vertical shear tool is a big help in providing a nice finish -
works on steel and most other metals. See FinishTool in the 7x12
Files. The tool is fairly quick and easy to grind, height adjustment
is not critical (as it is with most tool shapes).

Re: machining brass, how to ?

No, it's not. Once you heat brass above its alpha transition temp it
doesn't matter how it's cooled. It's not like steel where there's an
elaborate phase diagram to show how to heat treat it. The only way
to harden brass is to mechanically deform it, heating it will only
soften it. Quenching may warp it, usually makes the scale flake
off. FWIW, I usually just play a torch flame on small pieces lying
on a refractory brick & let everything air cool.

Hi,

Only if it were a perfect world. Tool bits come in many standard
sizes as you are aware and HSS types are ground to address the
need. This grinding is not likely to put the bit at the perfect
height though "good enough" is often heard. Adjusting the position
of a tool bit is Standard Operating Procedure a.k.a. SOP, and shims
of different thickness are routinely used. In fact most keep a
small
try of such items near the lathe.

An alternate is to use a Quick Connect Tool Post QCTP as most of
these have a height adjustment so one can quickly exchange the bits
and the height is adjusted. As it turns out, some of the QCTP
offered do not fit perfectly on some lathes the bits would be too
high and can't be adjusted low enough - your original point. Some
machining is required. Check with LMS and Lathemaster on this.

So, "tweaking" the height of the bit is a part of the job.

Re: HF 30% off coupon

Hi,

Yes, point well-taken. The issue here is that since the 8x12 lathe is also a catalog/website only item and it seems that a store took the orders... So, I am wondering what if the "service" will apply to other items or did by chance the store make an error and will refund the money?

I guess we will find out soon in the continuing saga of "Will HF actually fulfill the order...?"

Take care,

An alternate is to use a Quick Connect Tool Post QCTP as most of

Re: machining brass, how to ?

Rick Kruger

I wasn't aware of the annealing trick when I designed and built the tapered gib mod several years ago. I anticipated the warping, however, as I knew about the internal stresses and what happens when the surface is machined away.

What I did was to machine from both sides of the brass stock, in small increments until I got it close. There was still warpage, so I set the machined gib on riser blocks on each end and used the mill quill as a press to bend the warp out each piece. This is described in my article on the Tapered Gib:

<>

If you have the means to heat your stock and anneal it as Mike describes, you can probably save yourself some extra machining steps and trouble.

At 02:38 PM 3/11/2007, you wrote:

I have a mill and just bought the 8x12 lathe, what other things
should I order along with it?

In fact most keep a small
try of such items near the lathe.

Take care,
DBN

Maybe I'm missing something. The tool holder that comes
with the lathe
can not be adjusted vertically, right? Since you want to cut with
the
tool at the center of rotation (or slightly below, but never above!)
only a certain sized tool will get me there. Smaller tools can be
used
if you put a spacer in to bring the tool up to the center of
rotation,
but too large tools can not be brought down. Forgive if I'm missing
something here since I've never owned a lathe before. So I was
asking
what sized tool puts be on center without spacers.

Hi,

The lathe can use up to 1/2" bits - some postings suggest using
3/8" for most work.

I've heard
3/8" and 1/2". I'd like to order now so by the time I receive my
lathe
(about a week) I'll be able to do the basics right away. Thanks.
