The vertical shear tool is a big help in providing a nice finish -
works on steel and most other metals. See FinishTool in the 7x12 Files. The tool is fairly quick and easy to grind, height adjustment is not critical (as it is with most tool shapes). John --- In 7x12minilathe@..., "timbaker416" <timbaker416@...> wrote:

Re: machining brass, how to ?
No, it's not. Once you heat brass above its alpha transition temp it
doesn't matter how it's cooled. It's not like steel where there's an elaborate phase diagram to show how to heat treat it. The only way to harden brass is to mechanically deform it, heating it will only soften it. Quenching may warp it, usually makes the scale flake off. FWIW, I usually just play a torch flame on small pieces lying on a refractory brick & let everything air cool. fine finishes
Hi all. Sorry, but I have a newbie question. I have been messing
around with the new lathe for about a week now and so far I am quite pleased. My question is what is the recomended way to put a fine finishing cut on regular cold rolled steel? (I can get a finish on aluminum that is fantastic) I am in the process of putting a hand wheel on the lead screw and I am sure this will help but is there any preferred speed, feed or lubricant? I am pretty sure that the lathe is in order and the operator needs adjustment! Thanks in advance! Tim B. |
Re: 1st Timer Accessories-Tool Bits (HSS vs Carbide)
It's a pneumatic gizmo that supplies a water based spray thru a small
nozzle. The nozzle is adjustable for amount of water, there's an overall volume adjuster on top of the tank. The orange block looking thing on top of the tank contains a small eductor to lift the liquid from the tank. The hose leading to the nozzle is actually 2 concentric hoses, liquid in the inner one, air in the outer one. < 33100A/SEARCH:CATEGORY/Y/product.html> I'd forgotten, LMS offers a more reasonably priced similar item. < ProductID=2226> Having played with a HF cheap airbrush, I think it can be adjusted to provide a similar function. The genuine one has a wide adjustment range; I've used mine set "wet" to cut ceramic tile with a diamond blade on my radial arm saw. For normal grinding, you can set it fairly dry & still get good cooling. Roy --- In 7x12minilathe@..., "born4something" <ajs@...> wrote:

Re: machining brass, how to ?
Curiousity question: Is the quenching needed?
AFAIK people only quench brass and copper because they can. Steel would harden but brass and copper don't. So quenching is the quickest way to get things cool enough to proceed. However, surely a rapid quench is also liable to induce distortions. I know it's then softer so any distortions can be readily fixed. But if I was really worried about shape, why would I quench brass or copper? I wasn't aware of the annealing trick when I designed and built the tapered gib mod several years ago. I anticipated the warping, however, as I knew about the internal stresses and what happens when the surface is machined away.

What I did was to machine from both sides of the brass stock, in small increments until I got it close. There was still warpage, so I set the machined gib on riser blocks on each end and used the mill quill as a press to bend the warp out each piece. This is described in my article on the Tapered Gib: <> If you have the means to heat your stock and anneal it as Mike describes, you can probably save yourself some extra machining steps and trouble.
