The north store in Austin, Texas

The guy kinda looked at it weird so I told him, that someone I knew
came there and bought one no problem. He said on hold on and went to
talk to someone, he came back and rang it up no problem.
They get a commission off the extended service plan things so if you
mention that you want one then maybe they will work harder to make
sure it rings up. He however had no problem ringing it up using the
coupon I gave him.

If I were you and the store isn't too far I would go up there and
just hand them the coupon and the paper you have to fill out. If they
say anything mention that it is a store item and your buying it from
the store but its just not there because its a special order... If
that fails maybe the extended service may convince... Think its about
120 for 2 years or something like that. So that takes it back up to
the original sale price I think but you have the service...

No Idea if this will work but thats what I would do. Worth a shot.

Re: Harbor Freight 8x12 lathe tool bit size?

Druid Noibn

Hi,

Only if it were a perfect world. Tool bits come in many standard sizes as you are aware and HSS types are ground to address the need. This grinding is not likely to put the bit at the perfect height though ¡°good enough¡± is often heard. Adjusting the position of a tool bit is Standard Operating Procedure a.k.a. SOP, and shims of different thickness are routinely used. In fact most keep a small try of such items near the lathe.

An alternate is to use a Quick Connect Tool Post QCTP as most of these have a height adjustment so one can quickly exchange the bits and the height is adjusted. As it turns out, some of the QCTP offered do not fit perfectly on some lathes the bits would be too high and can't be adjusted low enough - your original point. Some machining is required. Check with LMS and Lathemaster on this.

So, "tweaking" the height of the bit is a part of the job.

Take care,
DBN

machining brass, how to ?

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is OT, but I don't think, being that is lathe improvement related.

I was trying to build the tapered gibs to improve my 7x10 lathe, but I'm having problem ( lot of ) with the brass warpage.

When ever I give a pass with my mill, the brass gib become more and more distorced.

So the question is: what could be the best way to machine those gibs to reduce the warpage ?

Re: Harbor Freight 8x12 lathe tool bit size?

Charles E. Kinzer

True, you can't bring the shank of the too large tool down. But if it is an HSS tool you are grinding, you can grind enough of the top of the tool away near the cutting end. Imagine a typical HSS tool grind that has some positive rake ground into the top. It looks just like this, but with more of the tool bit removed than usual. The result is still a more rigid tool, even with some extra ground away near the cutting end, than if the entire shank were smaller.

Re: Harbor Freight 8x12 lathe tool bit size?

Unless you change for a QCTP you are almost always going to have to shim your tools, especially once you start resharpening. not really a huge problem unless you change tools regularly. I keep a LH and RH turning tool pretty much permanently mounted, parting tool semi permanent and change that for a knurling tool now and then all on the standard toolpost.

Kevin, if you want to make your own simple high performance burner for
propane, a great place to start is with Michael Porter's book,

Gas Burners for Forges Furnaces & Kilns
ISBN:9781879535206Author:Porter, MichaelPublisher:Skipjack PrPublication
Date:2004-02-28I and a friend have made 3 of these, and they're awesome!

Here's a link to the book at Powell's Books,

The yahoo groups,

and

are active metals casting groups, with good discussions and a wealth of info
in the archives.

Aluminum cans generally have so much oxidation per amount of castable
aluminum that it can be quite discouraging trying to get enough good metal
to use. There are other much better sources of scrap, aluminum alloy wheels
being tops, then there's aluminum door and window frames, engine parts,
lawnmowers, etc.
DANGER, some of these scrap parts might be made of Magnesium instead of
aluminum. Magnesium fires are extremely hot and dangerous, and cannot be
extinguished with water, indeed they may become larger! Before you start to
melt unknown scrap, shave off a bit with a knife or chisel, and attempt to
burn it with a torch. If it ignites and burns, get rid of it! Stay safe!

Take another warning: metal casting can be addictive, especially when you
realize you can cast a part that's almost exactly what you want, then do a
little finish work on the lathe, and have a superb finished product! Did I
mention that you get to play with fire along the way?

Re: Harbor Freight 8x12 lathe tool bit size?

Hi,

No, you're not missing anything - you've understood perfectly.

I have a smaller lathe so can't give you the max siz for yours.
However, with a turret style post it is quite the norm to shim each
tool to height. You can shim a small tool up but not a big tool down
so there is a max. Although I had the right size HSS for my 7x12 to
work natively on the stock toolpost, I eventually succumbed to a
QCTP which gives vertical adjustment. This facilitates toolpost
mounted accessories like parting tool, boring bar holder, ball
cutter, miniature milling vice, etc.

have the coupon attached to the rain check if your particular item is
out of stock.

This is an in store coupon. Not an online coupon.

This could take the sting out of an 8x12 that is no longer on
sale!!!

Re: Harbor Freight 8x12 lathe tool bit size?

hi-

with the turret-style post that comes with the lathe, you need to use
shims under the tool bit to adjust the height. you can buy shim stock or
use things like cans, the strapping that came with your wooden crate,
etc.. for shimstock.

hope this helps!

Maybe I'm missing something. The tool holder that comes with the lathe
can not be adjusted vertically, right? Since you want to cut with the
tool at the center of rotation (or slightly below, but never above!)
only a certain sized tool will get me there. Smaller tools can be used
if you put a spacer in to bring the tool up to the center of rotation,
but too large tools can not be brought down. Forgive if I'm missing
something here since I've never owned a lathe before. So I was asking
what sized tool puts be on center without spacers.

Hi,

The lathe can use up to 1/2" bits - some postings suggest using
3/8" for most work.

Take care,

I've heard
3/8" and 1/2". I'd like to order now so by the time I receive my lathe
(about a week) I'll be able to do the basics right away. Thanks.

Re: HF 30% off coupon

Hi David,

THANKS - I didn't get this one.

As for the 8x12 - sorry, that lathe is not sold in the stores - only on-line or via a catalog purchase. Well, at least that is what the stores tell me and I checked all the ones in a 200+ radius of the NYC area. Do they sell it in the stores by you?

Again - THANKS!
DBN

Hi all,

I got a HF 30% off coupon that is good thru Monday. It is a scan of a print coupon. I used it today at a Harbor Freight store in North Austin, TX. It scanned and gave the 30% discount on a micro mill/drill. They seemed to have no problem with it being a copy.

You can get it at the following web address:

Re: Harbor Freight 8x12 lathe tool bit size?

hi-

you can use up to 1/2" depending on which tool holder you use. i've
recently started grinding my own hss tool blanks instead of using carbide
inserts which we've used almost exclusively. with just a few seconds of
grinding bits, you can end up with really nice finishes that we couldn't
easily achieve with inserts.

5/16" and 3/8" bits also work fine. we use 1/4" for inside chamfering and
threading.

hope this helps!

Re: Back in Stock, but at $499 Price

Hi Ednsu,

OR...if you are so inclined and can wait a few weeks - HF will likely have a sale again - no promisses, but they had several of the last year.

Take care,
DBN

Re: 30% off HF coupon

Hi Rick,

Woo Hoo! Here in Australia we write day/month/year so that would be
a 30% price cut for most of 2007!

Reads good to me but if they say it's valid until 3/12/07 I reckon
it'll expire at COB Monday. :-( I'd be surprised if they meant
midnight Sunday though. Why not phone?

John

Does the 3/12/07 date mean that they'll accept the

It's a 30% off coupon for HF. Only lasts until 3/12
but may be enough
to help some folks.
