Re: US/UK prices making a living
Hi
As another citizen of the UK considering the purchase of a mini-lathe I was interested in the price comparison. Now Chester UK advertise the machine at 340 GBP ex-VAT so the US equivalent, before local sales tax, is around 540 USD. By the way this does include delivery with the UK. There are any number of reasons for the UK/US price differentials, including: Bulk buying - the US market is 4 to 5 times bigger. Property is relatively cheaper in the US so company overheads are lower. Similarly for some labour costs, usually the ones the employer pays. But remember, at the end of the day the price a company sells at is the price it believes it can extract from the customer. Also, there needs to be plenty of competing products. To the best of my knowledge, in the UK the source of cheap lathes is limited. In the US there may be others. Right, now the economic lesson is over the actual lathes actually seem reasonable. So a question, does anyone use one as a production machine as part of making their living? |

Where I am from we call it a GST and PST, or Brian's Tax. So I buy in the states, use it for a while re crate the stuff and rent a truck and drive for 12 hours. It's house hold goods then. Your MP really does have a different view on his position in the world. If it wasn't for the "Yanks" he would be doing social reforms and restoration of the crown. While a member of the CF, I learned a deep dark secret. If the Russians came over the North Pole, we were to instruct our troops to point south and say "you want them not us, eh?" :-> There is one of those gun platforms still intact or more or less intact, they are offer citizenship, play music that may not be in good taste and have a major Internet connection. Hi Jerry,
The ones in the Thames estuary are largely dismantled except for a couple of girders with navigation lights on them, and the ones in the Solent (built in Napoleonic times) are now homes/hotels/deserted, and are not tax exempt. It is possible to import cheaper - and I do - but it has to be on a 'goods exchanged under warranty' basis. Not all suppliers well do this. I don't mind the 17? % VAT too much, but I don't like paying tax twice and the Customs adding a further fee for acting as my Agent to take my money off me, which takes a $129 item up to $244. I think a lot of the problems in getting stuff for the mini-lathe is that the suppliers here depend too much on shop sales (although spare parts are not in shop) and are not yet into ordering on-line so much. I have tried all the major suppliers here for a simple belt and was told in December that it would be January. Today I got a letter saying it would be February... So I am importing a couple of them. It's only Mr Bliar who thinks we are still a World power. Regards Ken --- In 7x12minilathe@..., Jerry Smith <jfsmith@a...> wrote: Ken,the Channel? They don't have any import taxes or duties. Jmm well to stay in th relm of mini lathes,(7x's) I would probably
say a micro mark because of the true standard markings and intervals, which makes for more accuracy IMO, although if money were not abject I would go with a 9x20. sean n 7x12minilathe@..., "lokinb <lokinb@y...>" <lokinb@y...> wrote: First let me say thank you for all of your input..till I actually get my Lathe.<bdh@c...> wrote:wouldThe "Speedway" is the Homier 7x12. canwonthate to buy it and have to buy another 6 months later cause itdo all the things I want. piece.just on a smaller scale. beshapeing and cutting. greatly appreciated. |

Hi,
If you want to know how lucky you guys in the US are, with your $300 prices, the 'most - sold' version of the Mini Lathe in the UK is the Clarke CL300M and it costs ?683 but Machine Mart sells it for a low <quote>Amazing Value</unguote> of ?469.94. Remember that is POUNDS Sterling or $1.50 for each pound. $300 is only ?200!!! They all buy them from the same factory in China too. I recently wanted to buy a part from the States which you can't get here. It would cost $129 for you. I would have to pay a further $56 Postage and then Import duty, VAT (Common Market tax) and a handling fee for paying the Customs, making a total of $244! The first time I went to the US (1952) we were getting $2.80 to the ?1 Pound - how times change. Enjoy it while you can... First let me say thank you for all of your input..
Now I have just one more question for you all. at least one more till I actually get my Lathe. If money was not a big deal, what mini lathe would you most like to own? and why? ok two questions. I dont mean to be a pest or to monopolize the conversation, I just like to be sure before I buy a tool that I am going to get the most use out of it I can... within its limits. to read all about it and its sisters and brothers. Just buy direct from http//www.homier.com saves hassles with ebay sellers and no worries about warranty hassles. Bob On 26 Dec 2002, at 22:01, lokinb lokinb@... wrote:

I have this same lathe, and I got it off ebay for $299. So far I am
happy with this lathe, although I am afraid you can't expect the lathe to do all the things its bigger brothers can do. Although it can do internal, external threads, tapers, turning between centers and stuff, jsut on a much smaller scale. There are many modifications you yourself can make to this little machine to make it even better, this is the best bang for the buck. I also reccomend going through Homier.com rather than ebay, shipping may differ by about 8 bucks more, the ebay is a big hassle IMO. Hope I helped! Sean BTW check out www.mini-lathe.com they have a comprehensive review on this very lathe. --- In 7x12minilathe@..., Jerry Smith <jfsmith@a...> wrote: This the HF, Grizzly and other brands mini lathe. I found an auction on ebay for the 7X12 mini bench lathe made by speed way. ViewItem&item=3102472367&category=25288 Is tis a good choice at only 300.00 dolars I am not sure and would hate to buy it and have to buy another 6 months later cause it wont do all the things I want. basically I want the lathe to do all the things a large lathe can just on a smaller scale. turning theads on the outside as well as on the inside of a piece. shapeing and cutting. any input you can give as to the suitability of this unit would be greatly appreciated. thanks Lokinb |

Since there are many of us here who may be interested, why don't you put a package together with some photos for us to look at? I'm sure special pricing for our group would also generate additional sales. Most of us here have a 7x10, 7x12, or 7x14 mini-lathe as well as I'm sure there are also several mini-mill owners. Maybe you could put together a complete DRO package for the lathes and mill and let us know? Regards, Brice ----- Original Message -----

Hello to all.
I Just joined the group and am looking for advice on which mini Lathe and mill to buy. I have been looking around and the prices seem about the same for most of them. I like the Micro mark 7X14 but I use metric allot and would prefer one with millimeter knobs on it. Am looking to get the lathe first and then the mill. Will be useing them for model making and for parts replacement on the instuments I work on for a living.. any advice you can give me would be great. thanks in advance for your input. Lokinb |

Do you have a retrofit DRO kit for the mill/drills like Harbor Freight sells? What do you have to added to the 7 x 10 lathe that would help automate some of the process of the lathe? Do you ship to the states and Canada? Jerry At 08:56 PM 12/24/2002 +0000, you wrote:
