Re: Pics and files

Hi Mario,

I belong to several yahoo groups and I believe most allow me to post my own photos, files as well as links to my own website. It sure is handy to have that flexibility. I have been a member of some for many years and don't remember any issues with abuse of the posting ability of any member. I am sure the potential is there though and can understand why the moderators and owners closely control what can be posted, but is is unhandy and inconvenient, but the groups are provided at no cost to us so we accept some inconvenience.

The new account worked great....and good photo too!!

I stay with my original suggestion - part it, flip it, center it, drill it, and face it.? You also have enough of the small area to indicate and even have finished the large area enough that you can indicate there too.

Just to make yourself feel better, you might want to indicate the large end, then take an inside mike and measure the finished area to the ways.? If it's too far for your mike, a 123 block should bring you to a test spot.

However, dialing in the small area in your 4 jaw as you normally would, then checking the large end should do it.? If both ends indicate, they are on axis.

Right now the center drilled hole, the lesser diameter turning (about 1" diameter) and the turned major diameter section (2" diameter) are all concentric.

My goal is to get the sawed off portion re-mounted in my 4-jaw so it is centered and all the turned sections are concentric to the rotation of the spindle.

Got a couple of ideas already.? Any other thoughts?

I've been using Google drive. It lets you have public and private folders. You simply pass along the provided link to the folder or photo you want to share. Very easy to upload photos and any other files as well like .doc, .pdf, etc. Not just for sharing photos.

Here is a link to one of my shared Machine Shop folder on Google drive.

But you say "they have to pay for the site" ?Yes. ? I pay both Apple and Google to store my data, if I make it public you can see it from free because I pay Apple $0.99 per month.

There are also MANY who offer free space where you can build a web site. ? They offer limited free space in hope that you like it and want more, then you'd have to pay.? But I'm sure that only expect a tiny percent to convert to paying customers.

Pics and files

Making the most out of Photobucket's woes.
Any interest in having a group parallel to this one, mainly intended for uploads meaning pics and files?
has been created. This unfortunately means registering individually but then so does any other pic storage service.
If members choose to use it, great. If otherwise, so be it. It's there for the taking and in the end, subject to yahoo's willingness to keep it there.

Best, mario

For myself, I find just a general file storage site works, something like Google Drive or Microsoft¡¯s OneDrive (or whatever it¡¯s called this month) might work for some.

That¡¯s mainly because I share files other than photos, which may be PDFs, Excel files, CAD models etc.

I use Dropbox (free version). It¡¯s worked fine for me for years, and like everything else you just paste a link, eg .

Dropbox syncs between your PC and the cloud, so there¡¯s no separate upload process. To get the ¡®cloud¡¯ link you can right-click the file on your PC and get it. Not sure how other systems (Google, Microsoft etc work).

Assuming the piece is centered and faced off square, can you part it off, turn it around in your 4 jaw and drill it from the other end??
Chances are the center drill is smaller than the finished hole and the hole doesn't care which way it was drilled, once it is drilled through.
If that works, facing off the parted end (which is now facing the tailstock) should finish the item unless I missed something in the description.

Thought I was being clever this time and started turning a piece on a long hunk of 2" stock - so I'd have plenty of margin for error.? See photo: ?
Next step is to drill a hole through the center of the turned section, starting from the tailstock end.? Unfortunately, in my cleverness, I didn't account for the length of the chuck and the drill - I either need a longer lathe bed or a shorter set up.

So, the next step now is to c ut off the turned section and re-mount it in my chuck.? Which leads to my question.

I've gotten pretty good at centering a piece in my 4-jaw chuck, using DI.? But, in this case, I need to center the counter sunk hole (where the tailstock is currently mounted) and also make sure the axis of the hole I drill will be parallel with the axis of the turned portion (IOW, make the axis of the turned portion parallel to the bed).? The turned down portion is about 2" long, so if it is not aligned parallel with the bed the hole will be off by quite a bit.? Any advice on the most efficient way to achieve this alignment?.

When I try to view your photo on photobucket, it says "Please update your account to allow 3rd party hosting". It used to just keep popping up ads while I was viewing a photo.

Re: Painted Myself Into a Corner Again

"You just need to dial it in so the turned section is centered & parallel to the lathe bed."
That's the part I was wrestling with.? Would it work if I put the TS center in the center drilled hole and set my DI close to the chuck and centered the piece.? Or, would I still have to set the DI near the end of the piece to make sure it was aligned.? Still a little hazy on this.

Short drill might work.? I could keep the current set up (haven't broken it down yet, pending advice from you guys), put my steady rest at the end and drill part way in with a short drill.? That would create enough room to get my standard length drill in place.

You just need to dial it in so the turned section is centered & parallel to the lathe bed. Drilling from the TS will center itself; you might prefer to start the hole from the end without the center hole already drilled. Or, after dialing the piece in, check to make sure the existing center hole is actually still on the axis of rotation.

You didn't mention the hole size, so there may be some other options. The easy one is getting a set of shorter drills. Twist drills come in 3 standard lengths; jobber, screw machine & taper length. Jobber are the commonly found ones, screw machine are shorter, taper length are longer. The sleazier approach is holding a drill in a carriage mounted holder by clamping down on the flutes with a piece of brass tubing to protect the flutes. If you do that, you'll appreciate that its such a nuisance to set up you'll be inspired to get a set of screw machine length drills ;-)

If the hole is big enough, it's also possible to drill it as large as possible with whatever size drill is short enough to fit on the lathe & finish by boring to size.

Re: Painted Myself Into a Corner Again

Yes, centered and faced off square on TS end.? I won't try parting off a 2" diameter piece - instead will cut it off on my bandsaw.? No reason I couldn't drill from the end opposite the center drill.

So, I would be using the faced off end to "square" the piece up against the face of the chuck?

?
Assuming the piece is centered and faced off square, can you part it off, turn it around in your 4 jaw and drill it from the other end??
Chances are the center drill is smaller than the finished hole and the hole doesn't care which way it was drilled, once it is drilled through.
If that works, facing off the parted end (which is now facing the tailstock) should finish the item unless I missed something in the description.
