I was also curious about the 9x19 or, with standard short centers, the 9x20.
Same lathe. I bought mine secondhand, in excellent shape for $300.
However, I had been spoiled By my Chinese 7x lathes, as well as the 12x36 by
that time, and was NOT impressed with the 9x. It was indeed bigger, but has
the same little 3/4" hole thru the spindle as the 7xs. The TS ram travel
was only 2", and the TS clamp nut was located in a small cast iron box,
baking adjustment difficult. I fixed that by designing and installing a Cam
lock arrangement. Changing the spindle speed was a bit more complicated
than on the 12X, and FAR more so than on the 7X; that was a real turnoff.
Changing feed rates was only moderately simpler than on the 7X, due to the
close ratio and limited range of the gearbox featured on the 9X. The wide
cross slide with T slots was a big plus, but the wobbly compound rest
wasn't. You get the idea. I sold it.

i been looking at a mico mark but you have to buy alot of stuff seperate. In
your opinion a grizzly is a good one. I might up grade to 9 x 19 you get
alot of the stuff free with the purchase.

FWIW, I've had good luck with the 3 I'm using. Small problems only, and
very good service from both Griz, & HF. Had no problems with the Homier.
Would not recommend ToolsNow for service.
The HF has been in use for 30 years or so, and because it's a little
short
in the bed, I've converted it to use 3-C collets. The HF has a 4 jaw
chuck
on it, and the Homier the 3 jaw. Dunno what you would need the 16" for
with
model trains, unless maybe you're making 7.5" gauge stuff. Kidding; you
always need a somewhat larger machine. I find it so, and I have a 12x36.
I
bought my 7xs back in the days when I had a little money, mostly out of
curiosity about what you could get for the prices they went for. The HF
7x10 was the first one, and I was impressed. The others were all a bit
more
expensive, but equally impressive.
