Subject: Re: [7x12minilathe] D Drills Hi I wanted to tell you guys that Mert's D drill worked. first I tried to stone the bit to shape, but that didn't work I couldn't get the shape sharp enough. Then I put my Dremel in a vise and held the Music wire to the side of a cut off wheel and ground it using my loupe for magnification. I then took it to my lathe and hand held it with a pin vise. It drilled a hole to what I believe to be about .013 or so,I must I ground past half way. This is great because I can open this hole to the size I need with a tool the watchmakers call a broach. What a great skill to learn I not limited to standard drill sizes any longer. Thanks again, Mert Rick Hill --- On Thu, 12/20/12, CLevinski <clevinski@...> wrote: From: CLevinski <clevinski@...> Subject: [7x12minilathe] D Drills To: 7x12minilathe@... Date: Thursday, December 20, 2012, 10:17 PM Mert, I've been fascinated by the idea of D drills for metal ever since I first saw a photo of one. I guess the ability to make whatever you need (by turning the raw stock to the proper diameter and hardening before grinding) just seems so useful! Are you aware of instructions for making them online anywhere, or are your instructions for Rick's tiny bit scale-able? And is there a size range where then work best? Thanks to you and anyone else for any input! Charlie --- In 7x12minilathe@..., "MERTON B BAKER" wrote: > > Make a D drill from .015 music wire.
