I messed up and deleted your recent posting on "step-by-step" guides. Most of the material posted is good - but avoid much of the over-priced offerings on eBay. Many positive comments were made regarding the DVDs offered by LMS. #1 issue - safety - the machines are fun, but we can do some serious damage if we aren't careful. #2 - enjoy the work - right now, practice, practice, practice. #3 - look at the DVDs and learn tool-bit grinding, and turning. Your experience with a mill is good, different but good. Let all know what you are doing - educate us. Take care, DBN Daniel <daniel@...> wrote: I placed an order with LMS and was very happy with the speed and products. I looked on LMS and don't see the 8x12 listed any idea what replacement parts match what you suggested below from HF? BTW what QCTP are you using one from LMS? * REPLY SEPARATOR * On 3/11/2007 at 3:28 PM Druid Noibn wrote:
Hi, For the 8x-12/14 you might wish to pick up: 28587-44859 Sync Tooth belt 550mm $5.85 28728-44859 v-belt 0-720 $1.38 29380-44859 Follow Rest (Optional) $16.57 29381-44859 Steady Rest (Optional) $17.63 29382-44859 Face Plate (Optional) $12.42 No # 125mm 4-jaw Lathe Chuck for 44859 ¨C about $58. The prices might have changed. Next be prepared to wait WEEKS or months to get the items. Recently, I am having a bit of a problem with HF, damaged items and it is now 5 (FIVE) months waiting for replacement items. Shipment of wrong items ¨C the v-belt needs to be O-720 and they sent a O-710 and a Z-737 ¨C useless! If you don¡¯t mind the wait, go for it, otherwise check out LMS and Lathemaster. Yes the pricing is good but the service is poor ¨C they need a change in management. As for the QCTP you asked about ¨C I didn¡¯t buy it so I can¡¯t attest to it fitting; sorry. I am sure others can give a good opinion on it and/or so a Google search on the topic. Take care, DBN oneacmename wrote: Does the 45439-1VGA from HF fit the 8x12 lathe? This grinding is not likely to put the bit at the perfect height though "good enough" is often heard. Adjusting the position of a tool bit is Standard Operating Procedure a.k.a. SOP, and shims of different thickness are routinely used. In fact most keep a small try of such items near the lathe. these have a height adjustment so one can quickly exchange the bits and the height is adjusted. As it turns out, some of the QCTP offered do not fit perfectly on some lathes the bits would be too high and can't be adjusted low enough - your original point. Some machining is required. Check with LMS and Lathemaster on this. with the lathe can not be adjusted vertically, right? Since you want to cut withthe tool at the center of rotation (or slightly below, but never above!)used if you put a spacer in to bring the tool up to the center ofrotation, but too large tools can not be brought down. Forgive if I'm missingasking what sized tool puts be on center without spacers.wrote: lathe3/8" for most work. ---------------------------------(about a week) I'll be able to do the basics right away.
