Re: Cross slide nut - dimple

I made this simple little mod to my machine about a year ago and have
had no regrets. The dimple acts to solidly index the screw and
prevents it from sliding back and forth across the top of the nut.
(wear pattern was easily visible on the nut) The difference it made
was rather noticeable on my 7x14 lathe.

Mark, IIRC, there was a post that suggested drilling a dimple in the
middle of the cross nut ( and grinding a cone on the end of the
middle adjusting screw ) so that when the middle screw was tightened
the cross nut would stay in place. Without that dimple, it was
theorized that the cross nut would move horizontally allowing more
backlash. I did it, though not as deeply as shown in the photo, but
haven't used it enough to say it worked. It didn't seem to have any
downside and it was a fairly quick mod. Barry

I was just looking in the photo section of the group, specifically
at
the modified cross slide nut. I couldn't reference a message with
the
pic, and would like more info. regarding this mod since I'm about to
rework my cross slide.

I'm wondering if the setscrew placed in the center hole of the brass
nut works better at taking out some of the slop in the leadscrew of
the cross slide.

Would someone either lead me to the message covering this mod or
post
again regarding this mod.

Thanks in advance,
Mark
