Re: Chips in my Shop
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
George,
I read a lot, but rarely write, here -? I'm a tetraplegic using a manual chair and have a small shop (took 20 years to build). 2 grinders, 2 drill presses, 2 mini-lathes, band saw, miter saw, welding unit and i do a lot of bench work (filing, hand cut threads...)??
I keep a shop vac handy, wear a leather shop apron loosely so i can put the sides over the wheels.? I used to have a service dog and visited a local commercial machine shop, heard lots of warnings about his paws and swarf.? Between the apron and vacuum and
shaking my legs outside keep pretty clean.
Building shields and swarf trays helps too, but you have to reach over and around them.....

Yea, folks, many options. Many with a price tag. When I say I get stuff it not as bad as it sounds. Yea, I get a cut or stab once in a while but I really keep things clean. As to tires, I check them carefully frequently. So though I get some injuries,
it's rare enough to not need to alter anything that I do at this point. Maybe as I do more in the coming future I may have to change things. One option I will most likely make an apron secured to the table from one end to the other and then to me. Thus all
chips coming towards me and the floor will be stopped. Perfect ? Dobt it but it would be a huge improvement on what I have now. Problem now is that a stray cat gave birth to 4 kittens under my lathe table so my work has been stopped for a while.

Bruce Bourdon ? George, could you dedicate a wheelchair for use only in the shop? The chips that stick to the wheels or land on the chair may be traveling out of your shop¡ ? I¡¯d imagine that some of the swarf that the wheels pick up are probably getting transferred to your hands and causing cuts. Could you get an electric wheelchair for the shop, so you wouldn¡¯t have to touch the wheels? If that¡¯s not possible, then maybe something to shield your hands? maybe you can move the wheels from the spokes, avoiding the rubber? while gloves are a dangerous hazard to wear while operating machine tools, maybe having a pair just for use while moving the chair around? ? May God bless you, Bruce.
