My only machine shop class was in the 1970s, so we have that in common! I use the technique described by Joe Pieczynski on YouTube for cutting RH threads - tool upside down, lathe turning in reverse, leadscrew turning the same direction. For LH threads (new cross slide leadscrew), tool rightside up, lathe turning forward, leadscrew in opposite direction (reverse). In both cases the tool is moving away from the chuck and any shoulder in the workpiece. It reduces my stress level a lot! :) Cutting away from the chuck is useful sometimes and I get a better finish (well, more consistent anyway) by using power carriage feed.
