Not quite 3 phase as you know it.

It's a BLDC drive based on the Microchip/Atmel BLDC Sensor-based reference design:


There also are designs that do not use an sensor/encoder and instead uses the back-EMF for BLDC control

ON the LMS BLDC - the encoder is that black thing on the back of the motor that has wires going to it. It's very critical that it is aligned correctly. Usually requires some o'scopes to set up the encoder feedback with the actual drive circuitry.

Some companies like CUI make things to make it easier to align the encoders to the drive's back EMF
- see this vid, it will give a good overview of how much of a pain in the ass it can be to align the encoder, and how their AMT One Touch works:



So yea - technically it's three phase, but it's usually something like a trapezoidal waveform that is locked to either an encoder or reads the back EMF to control voltage and current waveforms through the motor coil

The Fault light indicates an error condition. In your case it may be because the motor is not giving reliable feedback of its speed.

Nice you are following us on the Group.
I have an electrical question: how do you make 120 V to a 220 V motor? (Just for education!)

The 5200 lathe lamps is for 220 V, so it is difficult to read, but easy to fix.
To day with my broken motor, I see the FAULT lamp is glowing a littlebit.
Can you explain FAULT error ?

The motors used on the LittleMachineShop.com mini lathes and mini mills are 230V motors.

The motor on Alibaba is a 48V motor. Besides the voltage being correct, be sure to check the physical dimensions.

SIEG makes those motors at their factory in Shanghai so they may not be standard.

Hi group

I have a 5200 LMS lathe, and I think the motor is gone.
It need a manual twist to run and the motor make a lot of noise.

Sometimes ago the motor make a lot of noise, and I took out the rotor.
The axel under the bearing was very worn, I did something and it has worked ok until today.

A new LMS 4145 500 Watt Brushless DC motor will cost me 350/400 USD.
So before I order, I ask my group :
is it possible to get a new motor that can replace and fit to my 5200 lathe ?

350/400 USD Is nearly 1/3 of a new lathe :-)

If someone have some experience with this motor or similar , you are welcome to give me some advice.
