Re: Saw blades

Hi Paul
I've done a bit of study?on all the blades I can get in NZ and can say from experience I can detect no difference in the cutting ability of any of them, which is not to say that they were all equal!??
I've used the following (all 10-14 varipitch HSS teeth except Lenox which was 11-13):
Starrett Intenss Pro-Die? (US)? x1
Lenox Easicut? (US) x1
Bahco (Snap-on)? (Belarus) x2
Bruel? (Germany) x2 (dearest ~$40US)
Rontgen (Germany) x10
BiChamp (China bought in NZ) x9
Imachinist? (China via AliExpress and cheapest ~$4US ea) x3
Hakansson (Sweden) x2
Out of the box all cut at the same rate (within experimental error) when set up to cut square with the same bow weight (weight in cut).
The biggest difference was in the welding of the blade:??
  • If the blade cracks at the weld it is ALWAYS a manufacturing fault for which you should get a refund or replacement no matter how old.?
  • Imachinist had ~1.5" blade length of set ground off the teeth when cleaning the flash of the weld (blade would squeak each time the weld went through the cut in wood and leave lines on the cut face).?
  • Rontgen were the best with only 3-5 teeth affected by the weld grind and within 1mm in loop length, so I suspect they are CNC welded. That said I've had Rontgen blades crack at the weld.
  • Some international brands supply blades factory welded, while others send coil stock to the country where they're sold to be welded up in that country
All the above blades had zero hook to the teeth (tooth face at 90deg to the work) so have no real reason to cut differently as M42 HSS air hardens and will all??be at 67Rc.
My guess is that there are only very few companies world wide who have the capacity to electron beam weld the M42 HHS strip on the edge of the high carbon blade stock and they sell to all the others who grind and weld their proprietary blades.?
Find a blade that has been welded properly and stick with that - jv
