Re: Corona lockdown challenge

So a tree stump cut to the proper height with a couple of big nails in it won't be acceptable? ;-)

(Not that it's what I use...)

Hey all
Nice to see new members and Bill's welcome comment about cutting up a 'big pile of metal' stirred something in my head.
Everyone likes to make?stuff, and if you're going to cut up 'big metal', you need a couple stands either side of the saw.?
Most of us are stuck at home with the coronavirus just now, which gives us the time, if not necessarily the access to materials, to do something.
The challenge then is to make a couple of stands from what ever you have in your scrap pile.?
Here's the design criteria:
? ?1. They've got to support a 10' (3m) length of 2" steel pipe
? ?2. 3 point contact on ground, so they're stable
? ?3. Can be set to the exact height of the saw vice-table
? ?4. Fold up, so can you can store them easily
? ?5. Have something to stop the stuff you're going to cut from rolling off the top
The only rule is you got to make with only the bandsaw, a welder and hand tools (incl electric handtools)? +?whatever materials, hardware, glue etc you have to hand.
Are you up for it?
As a start point I'll attach a photo and the design of my stands which were made to those criteria and rules except I was able to buy the materials at the time.? They took me a couple of hours to make and are pretty simple.
I know this will favour those with bigger scrap piles, but that needn't stop you from treating it like an exercise in survival skills, having to make-do.?
Hopefully someone will do an even simpler design, and one for swivel-based saws too.
In the end we'll have fun and there will be new designs of neat stuff to build.
Who could ask for more? A bottle of Corona to celebrate? - jv
