backyard commotion on 200 block of 10th yesterday evening
With apologies for those receiving this twice, I am passing along a message from Sapna at 229. Sapna added that she heard that the prosecutor declined to charge in this situation and the minor was released. -- Neighbors, We at 229 called the cops tonight. We heard a commotion in our backyard around 9:43PM. I opened the curtain to see someone jumping from our backyard into our neighbor's backyard at 231. That is why you may have seen the police in the alley and on 10th. They came quickly after being called; they were already in the area after seeing a suspicious car with a broken window crash into another car on 10th. They have caught someone in a neighboring yard. I am not sure they caught everyone. I don¡¯t have more details but it is very concerning that people are jumping into our backyards now, not simply running through the alley. Stay safe, Sapna -- Cara Spencer

Hello everyone, We had two packages delivered this morning at around 1227. At 1247 they were taken by a figure hiding their face. I¡¯m attaching the video in case anyone spots them in the street. We¡¯ve reported this to the police so this is just a heads up but it looks like someone is targeting our block. Tom and Shannon (1015 Independence Ave SE) Sent from Outlook for iOS

Mott¡¯s Food Drive ends tonight - 5:30 - 7:30pm
Hi Friends and Neighbors - Mott¡¯s is hosting their 2nd annual food drive and tonight is the last night! Forgive my late email, I had my dates mixed up! If you have a chance to comb your pantry (you need to anyway, it¡¯s Thanksgiving week!!) ¡ª see if you have any extra of the recommended items below. Mott¡¯s will deliver them to St Cyprian¡¯s tonight. Thanks so much for pitching in if you can! For the second year in a row, we will be partnering with Holton Cares to provide meals and food to families in need. Holton Cares is run by members of St. Cyprian¡¯s Church and has a special way of providing assistance to families with dignity. Each family who is receiving food is scheduled for a private ¡°shopping¡± session for their family only. Each family chooses the foods from various categories that best meet their needs and preferences. Families not only choose the ingredients for their Thanksgiving celebration but select the staples they need for their households for the days beyond. We will be opening Mott¡¯s for food drop-offs (and tours) on November 15, 16, and 17 from 5:30PM ¨C 7:30PM. Mott¡¯s swag (t-shirts and hats) will also be available for purchase ¨C these make great holiday gifts for the Mott¡¯s fans in your life! See below for a list of the items that would be most helpful for the families. Please note that we cannot accept anything that requires refrigeration.

October 14th Armed Robbery & Enhancing Neighborhood Safety
Dear Neighbors: It is very disturbing to hear about the October 14th armed robbery, the second one on 10th street within a week. My heart goes out to the victims of last night¡¯s crime as well as the victims of last week¡¯s crime. It is such a personal violation. The only good news here is that apparently no one was physically injured. These two crimes follow some other reported incidents on nearby streets, which include armed carjackings in June and July. In addition to some neighbors¡¯ suggestions about requesting enhanced police presence on our street and installing more door cameras, here are few more thoughts about enhancing safety in our neighborhood: 1. Alley issues (C Street SE between 9th and 10th). A long-time resident of the neighborhood mentioned a conversation from several years back with a victim of armed robbery. The victim said that the robbers came from the alley between 9th Street SE and 10th Street SE (north side of C Street SE). Based on that conversation and the incidents from October 7 and October 14, the neighbor believes that the alley may offer hiding places and/or insufficient lighting that allows criminals to lie in wait for potential victims. The neighbor added that she avoids walking on C Street SE between 9th and 10th Streets, for this very reason. Walking by the alley this morning on my way to church I noticed bushes close to the sidewalk that are very tall and that come right up to the alley. These bushes, which I believe are part of the yard for the building at 900 C Street SE, seem like a hiding place for someone to observe passersby. One thought is to contact the owner of that building to discuss trimming drastically or removing those bushes entirely. Another thought is to contact the neighbors on 9th Street and 10th Street SE whose properties have garages in the alley and ask them (i) to inspect for potential hiding places around their garages and make reasonable alterations to reduce the attractiveness of such spaces, (ii) to consider installing motion sensor and/or dusk-to-dawn lighting on the garage walls, and (iii) to contact the DC government about potentially adding or enhancing public street lamps in the alley. 2. DC Council and Secure DC Plan. Councilmember Brooke Pinto, Ward 2, Chairwoman, Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, announced the Secure DC Plan in September 2023. According to Councilmember Pinto: ¡°Secure DC Plan addresses every aspect of our legal justice system by increasing accountability for violent crime and gun offenses, giving our public safety agencies the tools needed to address hiring and retention challenges, and enhancing infrastructure to make our schools, recreational spaces, and commercial and transit corridors safer. The Secure DC Plan will drive the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety¡¯s agenda this fall.¡± I¡¯ve attached a copy of her email describing the plan, for those of you who did not receive this message. Councilmember Pinto and the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety would be another point of contact in the DC Government where our neighborhood safety concerns could be shared. 3. Gun violence. People may disagree about the meaning of the Second Amendment and individual gun ownership. Still, it is reasonable to conclude that no person wants to be assaulted with a gun or see a family member or neighbor be a victim of an armed criminal. According to the DC Attorney General, many firearms connected with crime come from outside of DC, including from Virginia. Therefore, not only DC laws, but also laws in neighboring states, have a role in the rising incidence of violence in our neighborhoods. To that end, I am inviting my neighbors to join me in efforts to promote safety in our community and across our country. I volunteer with Moms Demand Action, https://momsdemandaction.org/ The group supports public safety measures to protect people from gun violence and works to enact stronger gun laws and close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. Our group also works with leaders to encourage a culture of responsible gun o

[0969BLOCK] October 14th Armed Robbery & Enhancing Neighborhood Safety
Last night after the robbery was posted on our email list, I emailed Councilmember Charles Allen to let him know that we've now had armed robberies on our block on two consecutive Saturdays. He wrote back this morning; I am pasting his message below. It sounds like he can make some noise with MPD to get them to send more patrols our way, which might result in an increased police presence. In addition, if the neighbors who were involved in these are comfortable in doing so, it sounds like he would be interested in hearing from them. His email is CAllen@... Here's what he wrote: Thanks for letting me know. MPD hasn't shared that with me but I'll track it down with Cmdr Hall. There shouldn't be a crime like this weekly, monthly, or ever. I know that MPD has been able to shift resources and patrols around to respond to where they're seeing robberies or other crimes. I'll ask Cmdr Hall to do that here for your neighborhood and to share updates on their investigations and actions. If you find out more, or anything about the victim from last night's robbery, please let me know and I can make sure they're getting outreach from victim services to help them recover. As the victim of an armed robbery myself several years ago, I know the trauma it creates and would be happy to talk with them directly.
