The week was full of in-person and virtual events to help participants understand what they can do as individuals and as part of community efforts to reduce food waste and increase food security. Are you familiar with food recovery initiatives in your neighborhood or ward? Here are some places to start: The brand new Reuse DC website powered by the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) includes information about how food businesses can connect to organizations that take food donations and how to volunteer as a food rescuer. The DC Food Recovery Working Group supports food recovery on all levels, from source reduction, to food donations, to composting. The group of representatives from food banks, nonprofits, and other partners meets monthly and encourages the public to join. The DC chapter of Food Rescue US connects businesses with excess food to organizations that need it. These initiatives and others help us meet the food and waste goals in Mayor Bowser’s Sustainable DC 2.0 Plan, but more work is needed. Hi neighbors, Today I found out that someone stole my visa payment (via a check) out of the mail and somehow wrote the check to someone else and cashed it. (Yes, I am still old school and write checks but this situation is likely changing my old ways). Then they tried to write 2 more fraudulent checks from my account for large amounts that couldn't go through since I didn't have enough money. I filed a police report and the police officer said this has happened to others in the neighborhood. He is going to reach out to the Postal Inspector for DC but wanted to make everyone aware of this!
