Safety/security meeting with DC Police Tuesday evening at Hill center
Here is a summary I saw circulated from this meeting that I thought others might find of interest. Antonia ----- Here are a few key points from the Hill Center meeting regarding crime in our area. Maslin case/North Carolina Ave - Police are looking for any information from witnesses on what happened the night he was attacked. - The police got a photo of a vehicle silver Honda Sonata circa 2005 with three people in it. They were using a credit card that had been stolen from Ms. Maslin's husband. So they are looking for any information, sitings. Mrs. Ford emailed a link to the video posted on you-tube. It can also be found by typing DC Police and Maslin into Google. Robberies/burglaries - February saw a 53 percent spike in thefts, which Chief Lanier said was unprecedented in her experience. Many are thefts of cell phones / hand held devices. Lanier advised people not to walk around with cell phone in hand, especially cautioned against walking on the street and working on bb/cell at the same time. - Police started seeing a spike in crime on the Hill (PS107) in July. - On robberies, they are seeing some success but response has to be immediate. Biggest problem in our area is 'snatches' and not robberies by gun or violence. Most crimes happen between 7PM-3AM. - They asked people to pay attention to surroundings, don't walk alone at night, don't walk and text at the same time, don't display i-phones on the street, other common sense things. For quickest response, call 911, not 311. - Sept 18 at 7 at Brent - officer mentioned meeting on burglary prevention. - Burglaries are happening mainly M-F daytime in our area. Bike patrols are now working and they haven't seen any crimes where they patrol. - Lock doors and windows. 20 percent of burglaries involve unlocked entry points. Resources - Police will do a free in-home assessment on how to improve your home security. Contact Caroline Smith at 299-3374 to set that up. - PS107 meetings: first Thursday of each month, 7pm, Tyler (10th and G).

Pound the Hill cafe on Penn close to closing
2
Thought i would let folks know this. "Pound the Hill (penn/6th) says they are precariously close to shuttering due to a lag in business. Don't let this happen! Pound is great! I tell you true: they are fab for everything from morning coffee through lunch and into dinner (yes, they do a surprisingly romantic, foodie-level dinner). The owner is offering 20% off dinner with the code karl20. Help him and help us keep a great local business and fav Hill spot from closing!"

hello everyone
2
Hi everyone, My name is Alison, and my husband, Matt and I live at 252 11th. St. I wanted to share some information I received from a police officer last week regarding suspicious activity. After being transferred 6 times and treated as a nuisance by 311 and numerous police substations, I was told by officer Pinson that the correct action to take if you would like more police presence (even just a drive through an alley), is to call 202-698-0068, and request "special attention" from Sgt. Jones. We are in PSA 107. In light of recent events, hopefully they will be taken more seriously from now on. Pleased to be a part of the group. All the best, Matt and Alison Marriott

MPD list serve, alerts and community meeting
Neighbors, I've received a couple of questions from folks about how to join MPD's list serve and enroll for their real time alert service. Info on each follows: Go to: groups.yahoo.com/group/MPD-1D/ and join. You can sign up for crime alerts at: http://72hours.dc.gov. Both are helpful resources. Finally, this Thursday, from 7PM to 9PM, fellow Commissioner Kirsten Oldenburg has scheduled a community meeting with MPD at the Hill Center. Originally the meeting agenda focussed on the recent spate of burglaries, though I think this will be broadened considering recent crimes in our neighborhood. Regards, Brian P.S. -- If you are interested in working on chronic offender reforms, please contact me--a few of us are trying to restart this effort.

Community-MPD Conversation on Burglaries: 28 August
FYI. For those who are interested in learning more about recent crime in our neighorhood, Commissioner Oldenburg is organizing the below meeting with MPD. Regards, Brian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <beat26@...> Date: Tue, Aug 14, 2012 at 8:38 PM Subject: Community-MPD Conversation on Burglaries: 28 August To: beat26@... TUESDAY, AUGUST 28 7 PM TO 9PM THE HILL CENTER, 921 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE SE This meeting--which I have arranged with 1D MPD officials--is for residents concerned about this summer's spurt in house burglaries in PSA 106 and PSA 107. The objective of the meeting is to learn as much as we can about burglaries to help us individually from becoming victims and to find out what we as a community can do to help MPD reduce the number of these crimes. To this end, I expect MPD officials to give us an update on the trends in the numbers, provide us with as much specific information about recent burglaries as they can without harming ongoing investigations ... and, to explain the kinds of actions police have taken and are taking to prevent more burglaries and to capture the perpetrators. There will be an opportunity to ask questions about burglaries. (Questions about other matters will be deferred to the end of the meeting. If there isn't time for them, they can be posed to police at the next regularly scheduled September PSA meetings.) This email will not necessarily reach all those who have experienced a burglary this summer. If you have such a neighbor, please make sure they learn about the meeting. Questions? Comments? Kirsten 546-8542 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS: Here is some good news and lots of helpful information from an Aug 11 posting on the MPD 1D Yahoo Group: "A short time ago, First District Units received a 911 call for a suspicious person in the 500 Block of G Street, Southeast. This call resulted in the arrest of a male subject for Receiving Stolen Property. The apprehension of this suspect was possible because of the assistance that the community provided by immediately calling 911, and providing a good description of the subject and the prompt response of First District Sergeant Pabrezis and other officers. As a reminder, subjects can be considered suspicious if they are going door to door in your neighborhood checking to see if doors are locked, observed looking into cars, or suddenly running from a property. Subjects whom you observe in this type of behavior may be involved in casing homes or businesses, burglary, theft from auto, fleeing the scene of a crime, drug activity, or even preparing for a robbery. If you see something that you believe is suspicious, please dial 911. We will respond and check it out. It may turn out as this case did. Individuals who have information regarding crimes should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any robbery committed in the District of Columbia." Update on Performance Parking
Neighbors, In September ANC6B will deliberate and vote on expansion of performance parking north of Pennsylvania Avenue. I've sent several e-mails on performance parking and conducted a community meeting to answer questions and gather feedback on the proposed expansion. The feedback has been positive. With few exceptions, residents recognize that this program will preserve parking for residents, as well as provide several other benefits such as a permanent visitor parking pass and access to non-automotive transit improvement funds for projects in our Single Member District. With a vote looming, I want to provide some additional details on the program, the ANC's emerging approach to expansion and why I am in favor of the expansion. First, let me emphasize that this expansion installs NO NEW METERS. I say again, NO NEW METERS. Previous e-mails may have caused some confusion about this. As a result of this confusion, I've been asked on several occasions why the ANC would implement a program that places new parking meters on residential streets. Fortunately for all of us, this is merely a rumor. Attached you will find an updated information sheet that describes the mechanics of the program. In short, performance parking creates Zone 6 only parking on one side of the street, extends the hours of the residential parking program (RPP--the program that's currently in place), provides a permanent visitor pass to all addresses in the pilot area and allows residents to program funds from pre-existing meters for non-automotive projects in the neighborhood. ANC6B's Transportation Committee met in mid-July and formulated the following position on expansion: July 2012 Draft Recommendation to the ANC: 1. The Committee recommends that ANC6B request expansion of the performance parking pilot in the areas allowed all the way up to but not including East Capitol Street; 2. The Committee recommends that ANC6B request uniform hours and days across the pilot area: 7am to 9:30pm, Monday through Saturday; 3. The Committee recommends that individual Commissioners work within their Single Member Districts to develop proposed exceptions to the standard North / West assignment of the "Zone 6 Resident Permit Parking Only" signs; and 4. The Committee will study and make recommendations on specific exceptions to the 6 days per week "Zone 6 Resident Permit Parking Only" postings, potentially allowing the 6B program to operate 7 days per week in designated commercial corridors. These exceptions will be proposed by SMD commissioners in consultation with affected neighboring SMDs and will be subject to approval of the full Commission. I am strongly in favor of expansion. I believe it will relieve parking pressure stemming from our growing commercial corridor, especially as the Hine project comes on line; it will create opportunities to make our neighborhood more livable and walkable through the budgeting of PPP funds for sustainability projects in our neighborhood; and it will provide neighbors with a convenient parking pass for use with friends, contractors and day-time service providers. I am also committed to obtaining visitor parking passes for neighbors not in the pilot area (those east of 11th St) and to working with the City to improve the process for obtaining multiple visitor passes for parties, dinners and other gatherings. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. If you believe your block merits an exception (items 3&4 above) to the standard implementation scheme, please contact me so that we can assess the situation. I am also looking for people to help me flyer blocks in the proposed expansion area--please contact me if you're willing to help with a block or two. Lastly, I'm happy to hold meetings block-by-block to discuss this issue (one is already scheduled for the 900 block of C St.). Regards, Brian Pate Commissioner ANC6B05

National Night Out - Reminder and Update
3
Neighbors, Just a reminder that National Night Out, MPD's annual community outreach event, takes place on August 7th. The NNO event planned for 6:30PM at Gessford Ct is a go, with one "cool" change. Instead of a BYOM BBQ, we will be hosting a BYOT (Bring Your Own Topping) ice cream social. The rest of the event remains the same. So bring your favorite rainbow sprinkles over to Gessford Ct at 6:30PM on Tuesday, participate in a short neighborhood walk, then return to Gessford at 7PM to share a scoop of vanilla, chocolate or sherbet with the Officers that patrol our streets. Coffee will be served. For planning purposes, please send me a note if you are attending. Hope to see folks there. Regards, Brian Pate

Save the Date - National Night Out with MPD
Neighbors, Next Tuesday, August 7th, is the Metropolitan Police Department's National Night Out--a City and Nationwide event focussed on deepening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Please save the date, and consider joining your neighbors and the MPD Officers who patrol our streets at 6:30PM on August 7th at Gessford Court. We'll rally in Gessford Court (200 block between 11th and 12th Streets), do a 30-minute community walk with the Officers of PSA 107, then reconvene at 7PM for a BYOM and BYOB BBQ. Understanding that it's a "school night", I look forward to seeing as many folks as possible. More details to follow. Regards, Brian ANC6B05

Capitol Hill Wine Makers Club
I'm looking to start a home wine makers club on the Hill. The Capitol Hill Wine Makers Club will be a group of folks who love to discuss, make and drink fine wines. The idea is for members of the club to meet once a month, where we share wine and food, have a business meeting, and discuss wine related issues such as: wine making tips, wine tasting, and wine with food. Wine making activities will range from "kit" wines, to "made-from-scratch" grape wines, to "country" wines (made from fruit or even vegetables), to Mead (made from honey). If popular, the club will also run a homemade wine competition. Interested? First meeting will be Monday, July 16th, at 7:30PM Tim Childress 11th & Independence SE tim_childress@...

Eastern Market Weekday Farmer's Line and Quick Updates
2
Neighbors, A few quick updates for you: Eastern Market Weekday Farmers' Line - I'm happy to announce that Eastern Market will hold its first weekday farmers' market on Tuesday, July 10th from 3-7PM. The line will be a mix of the familiar and the new, with 6 new farmers joining 5 farmers from the current weekend line. Several of the new farmers are Amish farmers from Maryland. Please consider dropping by and supporting both our Market and the local food shed. Security Walk - It has been awhile since our last walk, so mark your calendars for Friday, July 20th from 9-11PM. We'll rally at the corner of Kentucky and Independence Ave, then walk for an hour before linking up with MPD for the last half of the walk. ANC6B's New Executive Director - ANC6B recently selected a new Executive Director from several excellent, highly qualified candidates. We are lucky to have Susan Eads-Role serving in the position. Susan is our neighbor (of the 200 block of 10th St gang) and brings a wealth of parliamentary and legislative experience to the job. In addition to ensuring that the operations of the Commission run smoothly, Susan is yet another resource to help residents navigate the various processes of DC government, from zoning to historic preservation and beyond. 311 on-line - 311, the District's service call center, launched a mobile application in April. You can download it at http://seeclickfix.com/washington. I've been using it for about two months now and find it to be very handy for quickly submitting infrastructure problems (street lights, pot holes, etc.) to the City. Of course, it's not a panacea, but it is a helpful tool. If you are using it already and have any feedback, I'd love to hear it. Grade DC - If you don't get your problem fixed fast enough, consider letting the City know about it at http://grade.dc.gov, the City's newly launched feedback collection platform. It remains to be seen what the City will do with the information it collects, but it never hurts to provide them with feedback both negative and positive. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns and I'll do my best to get back to you. And please, please, please if you see me out and about, don't hesitate to stop me and let me know what's on your mind. My wife recently overheard someone at a sidewalk cafe saying that I looked "unapproachable", when the truth is most likely they just observed me trying to stay one step ahead of my five-year old son! I am always happy to hear what you have to say, even if its a registration of disagreement. Speaking of disagreement, look for updates on Hine, Eastern Market legislation and the status of several other neighborhood projects in the next week or two. Regards, Brian
