Yard Sale -- Columbus Day Weekend
You¡¯re Invited to Participate in the 200 Block of 9th, 10th, & 11th Streets SE YARD SALE Saturday, October 8, & Sunday, October 9 We¡¯re planning to hold a Yard Sale this fall in the two alleys that run between and parallel to the 200 blocks of 9th and 10th Streets SE, and 10th and 11th Streets SE. We¡¯ll do it over Columbus Day Weekend, Saturday, October 8, and Sunday, October 9, from 9 am to 3 pm each day. Everyone on all sides of the two alleys is invited to participate. Also, neighbors not adjoining the alleys are welcome to partner with a neighbor on the alleys to join the sale. In previous years, we¡¯ve found block yard sales to be a lot of fun, plus you get rid of some clutter. This year, we¡¯re hoping that involving two alleys will draw even more customers. We¡¯ll put up fliers and posters around the neighborhood and advertise in the Post and other media. Everyone will bring the items they want to sell out to their garage, parking pad, or backyard during the Yard Sale, and between customers we¡¯ll all get to visit. Usually, the weather is great by then, and the fliers, posters, and ads generate lots of customer traffic. We¡¯ll hold the Yard Sale both days, but you can participate as little or as much as you¡¯d like. The more the merrier! We have a core group planning the Yard Sale, but we need your help to make it successful. We need volunteers to walk around the neighborhood to put up fliers the weekend before the sale -- October 1 and 2 -- and then take them down after the sale. We will provide the fliers and tell you where to post them. We need help making the larger posters to attract customers. We also need a $10 donation from participants to help pay for advertising and supplies. Many hands will make the work lighter. If you plan to participate and can help, please tell us by Thursday, September 22. You can fill out the form below or send us an e-mail. We need the contact information to make it easier to communicate any last-minute instructions. We¡¯re looking forward to hearing from you and hope to see you at the Yard Sale! Cider Stand - Today!
Nico and Jacob were planning to have a lemonade stand this afternoon, but, given the weather, it has turned into a cider stand. They will be selling cider and chocolate chip cookies in front of our house starting at about 1:45. This will be a very small-scale operation. :) Please stop by if you are interested! Thanks! Non-trash items found in trash can
Neighbors, This morning as Paxton was going to put some trash in our bin, he noticed a very nice LL Bean backpack, a blue Carolina sweatshirt and a Wasatch Golf light green fleece vest. Our assumption was unfortunately that someone had stolen the backpack, and taken what they wanted from it (it was empty) and dumped them other items in our trash bin. On the off-chance that anyone is missing these items, or knows of anyone missing these items, please let me know asap. I may post on CL as well. Thank you, -Sara 222 11th St

bottle caps please???? 6
Neighbors, I was wondering if you might be able to help me out with a little project that I'm working on for Paxton and my wedding.... I need bottle caps (one each) from the following bottles of beer ASAP: Bud Bud Light Corona Corona Light Bell's Long Hammer On the off chance do any of you have a bottle of one of these that I could have the cap from? It needs to be in great shape and *NOT* bent at all. I can trade you for a bottle of beer in my fridge, if you want. I just don't want to have to go buy six 6 packs just for one bottle cap from each. Make sense? Please let me know if you can help! I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you, -Sara (222 11th)

Update on Eastern Market Legislation
Colleagues and Neighbors, At last week's ANC meeting I announced a timeline for pending Eastern Market legislation. The next day I received a note from Council Member Wells' Chief of Staff, Charles Allen, explaining that the Council Member has delayed submission of the legislation in order to answer several questions raised by several city departments. As a result the Council Member's planned public meeting in the North Hall is also postponed and the ANC has yet to set a date for its own hearings on the issue. Charles did not have a revised timeline, but felt like the delay would be measured in weeks. I'll keep you informed as the initiative progresses. Best, Brian Pate

Update on Eastern Market Legislation
Neighbors, I received a request for more information on the pending Eastern Market legislation and thought I would share my response in the event others are curious about the general intent of the legislation. Best, Brian ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Brian Pate <patebc@...> Date: Tue, Sep 20, 2011 at 9:52 PM Subject: Re: Update on Eastern Market Legislation To: Hi Betsy, The pending legislation will change the governance and financial structure of the market. Currently, the market is run by a part time market manager from the DC Department of Real Estate Services. An appointed committee of residents advises the market manager, but is essentially powerless to direct the affairs of the market with any authority. The market revenues and costs are handled as a part of the city's budgeting process and are subject to the vagaries associated with this process, vagaries that include sweeps and lack of transparency. For several reasons, over the past few years the market has run "in the red". I have not seen the draft legislation, but based on the recommendations of an Eastern Market Task Force and discussions with Tommy Wells, I suspect the legislation will propose the establishment of an Eastern Market Authority, similar to a convention authority, consisting of appointed professional positions with a full time market manager accountable to the Authority. The Authority would have full responsibility for operating the Market efficiently (notice not profitably--it would not be a for profit venture), with the city responsible for capital infrastructure costs for a set number of years. The legislation would also address other Market issues, such as grandfathering of vendors, operation and control of the weekend flee markets and quality control of the products and goods sold at the market. It's necessary legislation, but sure to stoke broad debate. In the short time I've been the ANC's rep to the Eastern Market Community Advisory Committee (EMCAC), I've come to learn that there are many, many nuanced issues at the market not normally apparent to the casual observer and market customer. Hope that helps. Any questions? Best, Brian

Redistricting - The battle continues
Neighbors, I'm forwarding the below e-mail from Commissioner Ivan Frishberg, ANC6B02. I concur whole heartedly with his position and am greatly concerned about ceding this part of our neighborhood to an ANC focussed largely on H St and NoMa issues. If you concur with Commissioner Frishberg and I, I encourage you to sign the petition linked to in the included e-mail. Best, Brian Pate ANC6B05 From Commissioner Frishberg:

Samuel Nance Dantzic 6
Howdy Friends and Neighbors! David and I have very exciting news to share about the newest addition to our neighborhood -- our boy, Samuel Nance Dantzic arrived two weeks ago on Sept 6th at 6lbs, 9oz. We found out we had been chosen to be his parents just a few weeks before and have been scrambling to get our lives in order to take on the most rewarding challenge and honor to be his parents! We are over the moon thrilled. Until the adoption is final, we are living in Del Ray as Sammy has to stay in Virginia until all the paperwork is completed. We hope that's within a couple of weeks. A dear family friend has moved to DC to be Sammy's nanny and her name is Nori. You may see her in and out of our house while we are in Virginia and you'll definitely see her around the hood with Sammy. We are looking for an apartment in the neighborhood for her to live in, so let us know if you know of something that would be ideal for a very responsible, cool, and charming young woman. We are almost as excited about having Nori in our day to day life as we are Sammy... No matter what, David and I look forward to you all meeting Sammy in the weeks to come. Thanks for welcoming Sammy and Nori to our very cool block. We'll see you in the alley for sure. Cheers!

Anyone know what happened last Wednesday? 8
Hi all. I heard some disturbing news this morning. Apparently last Wednesday at 2pm, a group of teenagers came out of the alley (at 11th and C, closer to the dry cleaners), knocked a man out with a brick to his head, stole his wallet and stuff and took off. The man lives on 11th Street (on the 11th and 12th block) and doesn't remember anything and is recovering at home. The neighbor that told me this happened said that C Street was blocked off by police cars that afternoon as well. Does anyone know anything about this? I looked in the police alerts but didn't find anything. (And does anyone know who it was and if we, as neighbors, can help them with food or anything?) Thanks, Katy

Quick Updates
Neighbors, In no particular order, I wanted to provide you with an update on a few important items in the neighborhood: *Thefts from auto *PSA 106 expansion *Eastern Market Legislation *Hine PUD *Redistricting Thefts from auto As many of you may be aware, in the past two to three weeks we've experienced a rash of thefts from auto around East Cap from 9th St to the park. The MO in all cases is the same--smashed rear passenger side window. MPD is aware of the issue and recently made an arrest in PSA 102 of a chronic theft from auto offender. However, it is not clear whether or not the offender is linked to our crimes. I am organizing a walk this Saturday evening from 12AM to 2AM. Five months of counter-smuggling and interdiction operations along the border of Syria taught me that there is not better deterrent to crime than presence, and that a little goes a long way. I'm looking for able bodied volunteers. Please contact me at patebc@... if you are interested in a late night stroll. PSA 106 expansion Several weeks ago, MPD1 Commander Hickson reviewed his proposal for reapportioning the Police Service Areas (PSAs) in MPD1. The total area of MPD1 will shrink, with objective of better balancing the workload across districts. Within MPD1, our PSA, PSA 106, is on the lower end of PSAs in terms of workload (a statistic calculated by tallying the total number of calls received and the total number of responses in a given area). As a result, our PSA, PSA 106, will actually expand. The change is set to into effect in January 2012. Maps, statistics and more on this soon. Eastern Market Legislation At a redistricting meeting held last Tuesday night, CM Wells mentioned that he expects to post the the draft EM legislation on Monday, October 3rd. Introduction to Council should occur the following day. I'm trying to confirm that CM Wells will hold a public meeting in the North Hall to review the legislation on 5 October. ANC6B intends to hold a listening session on the legislation within a few weeks of introduction, tentatively mid-October. Hine Planned Use Development (PUD) I expect Stanton/Eastbanc, developers for the Hine project, to file their PUD paperwork within 30-60 days. For those unfamiliar with the PUD process, it is an essential element of the overall development process. In exchange for relief from various zoning requirements, the developer and community stakeholders negotiation a package of community benefits. ANCs typically take a lead role in consolidating community input and negotiating with the developers. At our ANC6B meeting on October 11th, we will consider a proposal to establish a Hine sub-committee charged with leading negotiations. The sub-committee would include community members from key stakeholder groups. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the types of benefits we should be seeking. My guiding personal principle is that we should seek benefits that will have an enduring, positive impact on our neighborhood. Redistricting The Ward 6 Redistricting Task Force submitted it's final proposal to CM Wells on Wednesday night. The TF proposed one change to the ANC6B boundaries, recommending that ANC6C annex the area south of East Capitol St to Independence between 2nd St and 8th St. ANC6B strongly opposes this recommendation and is actively working to overturn the recommendation. ANC6B proposes that CM Wells consider and endorse a "status quo" proposal considered by the TF on August 8th. At this meeting, the TF voted unanimously to support this plan. SMD05 resident and former Commissioner Ken Jarboe served on the TF, and advocated vigorously for the status quo plan. Personally I appreciate the energy he dedicated to the very difficult TF task, and his sound reasoning throughout the process. I've pasted his dissenting opinion on the TF recommendation at the end of this e-mail. If you agree with his opinion, I suggest going to the "Hill is Home" blog and voting on their poll to "keep the status quo" (http://www.thehillishome.com/2011/09/reader-poll-redistricting). Alternatively, write CM Wells (twells@...) and sh
