ALLEY PARTY - SUNDAY, MAY 1
11
Don't forget our first alley party is scheduled for this Sunday, May 1, NE end of the 11/10th st alley, starts at 4pm till whenever. Sorry I haven't sent out a reminder sooner but we've been away over spring break. So, we need to do some nominal planning. The idea is to set out tables with food and drink against the back of our garages/yards. My thought was everyone could bring a dish of your choice, entree, desert, salad, h'orderves, chips, etc.... I figure we will get a decent mix by default. The question is what we want to do for drinks. Someone mentioned a keg? We could also set out coolers and everyone could bring nonalcoholic drinks (water, soda, juice for the kids) and beer and/or wine. I will put myself in charge of getting ice and some balloons to make it a bit festive. Thoughts? Now let's hope the weather holds for us. Thanks, Antonia

Elizabeth Eddie and I have been doing an annual spring yard sale together for the last 4 years or so. We are planning this year's for Saturday, April 30th, 9 am - 1 pm. Nothing fancy just a way to clean the house out of old toys and things we don't use anymore. We'd love to have others join us if you are interested. The more the merrier. Just let us know. We will be combining our stuff either in front of 230 or 219 l1th st SE. You can set up in front of your own place at the same time or come down to where we are, whatever works. I will be posting signs and advertising on MOTH and the Hill is Home the week before. Antonia

Children at play sign
2
I just purchased a big yellow stand up "Children at Play" sign so that if we ever get another nice day and the kids are out playing in the alley we can put it up and hopefully that will help slow (or stop entirely) the cars driving thru the alley cross road.

Alley update, a party?
6
As many of you already know our alley work is now officially completed. While it wasn't as much as we all hoped would be done (or dreamed about like Gessford) it is still a vast improvement over where it was a year ago. And with the nice weather this weekend many of us took advantage and were out back socializing and watching the kids playing together. I am attaching a couple of photos we took this weekend showing all the fun that was had. To officially inaugurate the improvements in the alley as well as the fixing up off 221 and 223 11th st (WOW, who thought that would ever happen!) I thought it would be fun to have a block alley party one weekend afternoon. Block it off from cars and we could have a potluck with tables set up and food and drinks. I mentioned this to some folks and everyone seemed to like the idea. So, I was thinking weather willing we could aim for the end of April. Would either Saturday, April 30, or Sunday, May 1 work for folks, say 4pm? Let me know what you think and then we can firm this up. Thanks! Antonia

Alley part: Sunday, May 1
2
Thanks everyone for your positive responses. I found out that Gessford is having their own alley party on April 30th. So as not to compete with them I suggest we do Sunday, May 1st, which overall actually seemed to work better for folks anyway. So, mark your calendar. Sunday, May 1st, 11/10th street alley party starting at 4pm. As we get closer to the date we can hammer out more details. Antonia

Join us Thursday evening at The Corner Store to learn more about The Hill Center
3
Hey Friends and Neighbors - We wanted to invite you all to join us this Thursday March 24th from 6 - 8pm at The Corner Store for a cocktail party to learn more about The Hill Center. The Hill Center is an incredibly exciting new community center slated to open this summer in the Old Naval Hospital, just a few blocks away at 9th and Pennsylvania Ave. You may've noticed the construction that's been going on there for the past several months. The historic restoration is an amazing process in itself as the building is an architectural treasure that has been allowed to deteriorate for far too long. But perhaps more important, The Hill Center will provide our neighborhood with another community meeting place that will offer something to residents of all ages and interests. In addition to a range of classes, exhibits, lectures, performances and social programs, the environmentally friendly campus will provide a unique venue for special events and conferences, a family friendly caf¨¦ in the old carriage house, as well as office space for local nonprofits. The Capitol Hill Community Foundation gave vision to this project and has been working tirelessly for the past ten years to bring this wonderful resource to life. This is a $12 million project, and just over $10 million has been raised to date. Of this, $1.2 million has been quietly raised from members of our Hill community, which represents 10% of the whole budget for the renovation and start-up of the Hill Center. The Hill Center needs to raise an additional $2 million and we are spreading the word wider, seeking support from many other members of the community. As a part of this effort, the Hill Center is holding a series of cocktail parties around the Hill to introduce the newly named Executive Director, Diana Ingraham and solicit the support of a broad cross-section of the Hill community. We hope you'll join us Thursday evening at The Corner Store to learn more and consider ways that you may be able to contribute to this important campaign. And while we hope you will financially support the effort in whatever way you can, what is most important to us is that you come out and learn about the opportunities the Hill Center has to offer to our neighborhood. Check out their website to learn more and see a great video about the vision for the Hill Center: http://www.hillcenterdc.org/index.html If you can join us Thursday, please RSVP to Ann Goodwin at manngoodwin@... or 202-546-8483. Hope you all enjoyed this beautiful weekend in our lovely neighborhood. And we really hope to see all of you on Thursday evening. Cheers! Martha and David Dantzic

Over the last 2 years many of you may have noticed the vegetable stand that appeared on our porch June-November, every Thursday, 4-7 pm. This is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group run by local farmer Michael Protas that we belong to as do neighbors Gregg and Jennifer, and Martha and David. Michael is currently looking for new members to join his CSA for this coming season. We all love it and the veggies are REALLY wonderful. Plus you can't beat the convenience of the pick up location, our porch. If you are interested in joining here is the info. From my contact over in the mayor's office. Here is what I was told today. "DDOT was out in the alley on Tuesday to make measurements. They will reconvene, weather permitting, within the next 5-10 business days."

Need freezie packs?
There's a box full of small freezie packs on our porch. Come help yourself. They're small and the perfect size to keep a lunch cool.

tree pruning on March 24th
You'll have noticed the signs that went up on the north end of the block this weekend for tree prunning to happen later this week. This was a result of my request to the city. I specifically had asked awhile ago to get the tree directly in front of our house (219) pruned. Finally, they are getting around to it, and it appears they are doing all the other tress on the north end of the block as well which is great.

Moving truck
Good morning, I wanted to alert everybody that we may have a moving truck in the alley for a very brief amount of time this morning. They will be there only as long as it takes to unload a piano. Many thanks and please let me know if you have any concerns or questions. My mobile number is 202-556-0276. Many thanks!!! Sincerely, Your new-ish neighbors at 223 11th, Kara and Michael Campbell Kara (Calvert) Campbell Franklin Square Group

New contact table, please fill in your info
I have created a table for everyone's contact info. I think this will be quite handy to have. It would be great if everyone can go to it and fill in your names and contact info. Should only take a minute. It is at, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/11thSEblock/database On a less positive note. Now unclear what work if any DDOT was really doing in our alley earlier this week. I am in contact with staff at the Mayor's office to see what more I can find out. In addition, I have been keeping Tommy Well's staff involved and they have been helpful in pushing the project forward as well. As I get updates I will be sure to pass it on to the group. Antonia

Welcome to our new block email group, some good news
Hello Everyone, I'd just like to welcome you all to the new 11th st SE (and 10th st too) block email group. I am so glad so many folks have joined. I hope this list will prove useful for sharing information. In fact, I already have some good news to share. As many of you know the city has been working on fixing up the alley between 11th and 10th streets to address the standing water and structural issues that have been plaguing us for years. They started the work last summer and then stopped through the election and recent bad weather. I was fearful they would never finish what they started. However, the crews just returned today. I am hoping that they will finally complete the work. We'll see. I will keep folks updated on the progress. Antonia
