coats/snowsuits for Turkey
Katy P
Hi all.
My Turkish friend is traveling to Turkey on Friday and asked me if we have any old infant/toddler/small child snowsuits or coats that she can give to earthquake victims. Apparently there are enough adult clothes, but small children (who traditionally aren't taken outside much in the winter) are in need. If anyone has anything, please let me know. I'm gathering stuff up tomorrow/early Wednesday. Thanks, Katy katycarvt at gmail |
Interested in a free cat?
Elizabetheddie
Hi everyone, a friend went hiking in West Virginia and found a sweet little kitten. She couldn't leave it behind, because we all know, the poor little thing needs a mom. Her husband is allergic to cats so they can't keep it.
We also have a cat already and no room for another. Feel free to contact Claudia at 202 547-8747 if you want the cat if not pass the word. Thank you! Elizabeth. |

Halloween Alley Party, Sunday Oct 30th!
Hi Everyone! So hope you all still remember that we are planning our first annual Alley?Halloween?party for next Sunday, October 30th. ?My thought was to?start?at 4pm?since?it gets dark earlier now. I figure it will go to about 6:30. I was fearful this?would?conflict?with
Hilloween but luckily that will be happening on Monday. So, here are my thoughts please others feel free to pitch in ideas too.?Also, anyone able to show up a bit early to decorate and set up?would?be much appreciated as well. 1) This will be a potluck?like?our first alley party.?Bring?a dish and drinks for yourself and your kids. We will put out coolers. If you have a table you can bring out to put food on?please?do. We can put the food tables together pushed off to one side
so folks can walk?around?and the kids can play. Also?Maureen?offered to have?marshmallow?roasting over their?chimera. That would be fun. 2) I?have?some?Halloween?decorations?I will put up and if others have decorations to spare?please?come?a bit?early?and we can put them up to make it all more festive. 3) Kid activites: Definitely lets have the kids dress up in their costumes and we can plan to?have?a small parade?around?the block near the end, say ~6pm. Also I was?thinking?it would be fun to have several game stations. A?friend?of ours did
this at a b-day?party?and it worked quite well. Say 4 games stations (dunking apples in a shallow pan, spider dart game (I have), throw 3 balls through a hoop, other ideas? ?The kids then mark off a card when they have completed?a game successfully and when they have?finished?all stations they get a?prize. ?I have a big bag of ?kid prizes that I can use ?for that. So, not too time intensive, simple and?something?fun for them to do. ?But I am totally open to other ideas. 4) Someone had suggested ?pumpkin?carving, which sounds great,?but I had this vision of lots of sharp knifes around small children and don't think that will actually work so well. But if there are any other ideas around pumpkins send them?around. We can use our garage as a storage/organizing?space. I will set up a database on our group website for folks to put in what dish and drinks they plan to bring and?anything?else. ?This can help us keep track so there isn't too much duplication. This will be lots of fun! Let's all?collectively?cross our fingers that?we get decent weather. Hope lots of?folks?can make it and feel free to invite your neighbors too. cheers, ?Antonia |

That's great, Chris.? Mainly DDOT issues, but also one or two DCRA issues and a few general items that are more for your situational awareness than anything else.? A few of the items are "good news" stories as well.
? DDOT ? * Alley repair, drainage and cleaning.? I'll be taking you to an alley between 9th and 10th as an example.
? * Sidewalk conditions, specifically the sidewalks that are priorities in the SMD. ? * An RPP?signage issue near Eastern Market ? * Tree trimming on 11th St ? * Bikeshare near Lincoln Park ? DCRA ? * Blighted/vacant property at 13th and Independence
? * Nuisance?abatement at 200 9th St ? * Demolition by neglect case at 820 C St ??* Time allowing, a discussion of a stop work order at 1320 Mass Ave? ? General items
?* Pending Hine PUD and related traffic study ?* Progress of Kim Brenegar park at 8th and North Carolina Ave ? Thanks again, Chris and see you tomorrow.? ? Best, Brian ? ? On Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 8:52 AM, FitzGerald, Christopher (EOM) <christopher.fitzgerald@...> wrote:

Hey Folks -?

In the four years we've lived here, the mail service was terrible from the get go -- we never had the same carrier. ?Carriers were often late into the evening delivering mail, delivering wrong mail etc. ?When we first moved here, we even had several packages stolen (we were getting married so got lots and lots of packages daily). ?
Once Tony started on our route, about 1.5 years ago, our mail, just our mail, started coming (we often had the old owner's mail despite their address change). ?It came every day around 1 - 2pm. ?And, if there was a package for us, he would ring the doorbell. ?If I wasn't home, he'd leave it under the stairs out of sight. ?
I also mail alot of packages from my house with flat rate stamps for my business, so I often put mail out to be picked up. ?Tony never misses it. ? I can always tell when Tony is on vacation or off for the day -- or placed on another route. ?
From what I learned conversation with all the mail carriers, and I've talked to them all, no one likes our route - it's one of the longest. Before Tony started, we would never have the same carrier for more than a week, or a few days even. ?For awhile they broke it up differently, by block. ?About 2 months ago, Tony was reassigned to 10th Street and beyond, but not on our route. ?
To me, having the same carrier every day is huge. ?And, from my daily perspective seems to have worked very well. I am surprised others haven't had the same experience with Tony. ?He knows my routine, that I work in the basement, where to find me, and that the packages I send are safe (if you consider bluegrass non-toxic). ?Because I?work from home, I am very familiar with most of the delivery folks from UPS, Fed EX and the USPS.
Now, Tony has been off the route for the past several weeks - hence the late night deliveries. ?Sherman (our sort of new carrier who's now been assigend help) ?delivers later as he tackles the route differently. ?And he hasn't been picking up my stamped letters or packages. ?Sherman seems like a nice fellow, but Tony told me that the route is too big for him, which is why Tony has been helping with the route the past two weeks. ?I was shocked when I found my mail yesterday afternoon!?
And, today I was thrilled when Tony rang the doorbell, and had a package for Sammy! And we always have kind words. ? Tony is the happiest mail carrier I've seen! Tony is thoughtful, careful, mindful, knows my routine and needs and makes sure my mail comes and goes. ?I really appreciate him. ?And hate that I'm getting whacky mail service again. That's why I like him so much! On Tue, Oct 18, 2011 at 3:46 PM, Jim Hall <jimhall1111@...> wrote:

Tony the mail man petition?
Howdy neighbors -
Dont' know if you all love and rely on Tony the mail man like I do, but you may have noticed he was assigned a different route. Saw him today and he's helping out on his new route... but isn't permanently assigned to 11th ST. Tony said someone had a petition going got get him back on our block. If so, I'd love to sign it and get help. If not, I'd love to start a movement to get him back. If anyone knows how to keep the best mail carrier we've had, please let me know! Tony rules!
