Quick updates

Brian Pate

Neighbors,

Below please find a few quick updates on important neighborhood issues.

Redistricting concludes

Many of you may be aware that last week CM Wells publicized his final map submission to the Council Redistricting Sub-Committee.? His plan restores the original boundary of ANC 6B, a positive development in my eyes. ??While redistricting may seem largely like inside baseball, it can significantly impact how political institutions represent residents on the issues that matter most to them (or whether they have any substantive representation at all), thus it is important to take an active stance on the matter.?? Stretching back to the often vitriolic Ward redistricting battles earlier in the year, I am happy to put the long, tedious and sometimes oblique process of redistricting in the rear view mirror.

Liquor license renewals?

Both P&C Market (Corner of East Cap and 11th St) and Mott¡¯s Market (200 block of 12th St) seek to renew their class B liquor licenses.? Class B licenses authorize the sale of wine and beer, and are most frequently associated with convenience stores and grocers.?? The ANC¡¯s Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) committee will review the applications this Thursday, beginning at 7PM, at the Southeast Library.? I am not aware of any issues with either market and intend to support the renewal applications. ?If you are aware of any issues or have any concerns about either market, please contact me or Tom Woteki? (drwo@...).? Tom recently became our Single Member District (SMD) resident member of the ABC Committee (thank you Tom!).

Mr. Dent, continuing smash and grabs and the next neighborhood walk

My colleague, Commissioner Kirsten Oldenburg, provided an update on the status of Mr. Dent, our recently apprehended car thief.? Here¡¯s the update, ¡°Lt. Fowler and others have informed me that Mr. Dent, whose case has been "papered", is being held in jail pending his status hearing scheduled for 29 November.? According to the PSA 103 arrest posted on the 1D MPD Yahoo group, Mr. Dent is facing a felony charge of "destruction of property".?? Lt. Fowler also told me that another individual arrested for theft from auto crime has been released so we may not be able to expect a decrease in thefts from auto on the Hill since 10/14 when Mr. Dent was picked up.? I will send out details with my monthly crime report next week.¡°

I¡¯ve also received a few new reports of recent smash and grabs in the neighborhood.? Clearly continued vigilance is required.? We¡¯ll conduct our next neighborhood walk on November 9th, from 11PM to 1AM, rallying at Meg Krause¡¯s house for coffee and cider prior to the walk.? Please let Meg (mkrause@...) or I know if you are interested in joining the walk.?

Eastern Market Legislation

Last Thursday, ANC6B and the Eastern Market Community Advisory Committee conducted a joint community session to gather feedback on the Eastern Market Preservation and Development Act.? The act, if passed, will make significant amendments to current city laws governing the market.? The most significant change is that the Act will transfer operational control and accountability for the market from the city to a non-profit Trust (the Eastern Market Preservation and Development Trust).? Approximately 85 members of the Eastern Market community (residents and vendors) attended the session, offering constructive feedback on a broad range of issues.? You can find the original law, a copy of the proposed amendments and a side-by-side functional comparison of the original and amended laws at .??

The legislation sets the foundation of the future of the Market, therefore it's important to get this right. ?What is your vision for the future of the Market?

Results of SMD Walk Around

A week ago Friday I had an opportunity to review a number of issues in the SMD with the Mayor¡¯s Ward 6 Liaison, Chris Fitzgerald, DDOT representative Mark Bjorge and DCRA Inspector, Gil Davidson.? ?Our survey focused predominantly on sidewalks, alleys and tree trimming.? I¡¯ll be posting a ¡°punch list¡± of issues and their status in the next few days.??

Kim Brenegar Memorial Park Meeting

The Friends of Kim Brenegar are hosting a community meeting to discuss the status of "Kim's Garden" this Saturday from 10:30 to 12:30 at Christ Our Shepherd Church (801 North Carolina Ave). ?Child care and light refreshments will be provided.

SMD05 Resident Committee and Task Force Members

Make sure to thank Jim Rowland, Susan Eads Role, Rodd Santomauro and Tom Woteki for volunteering to serve as voting members on various ANC task forces (Jim-Transportation, Susan-Planning & Zoning, Tom-ABC and Rodd-Outreach). ?They will each add immeasurably to the ANC's capacity and talents. ?

Lastly, be on the look out for a pre-Thanksgiving SMD meeting to discuss the latest on the Hine Development, performance parking and other items of neighborhood interest. ?More to come.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any issues, ideas or concerns.

Regards,

Brian

Neighbors,

I received a "good news" call from Lt. Fowler this evening. ?Last night MPD arrested Mr. Dent, a repeat theft from auto offender and a person of interest in our recent rash of smash-and-grabs in the west Lincoln Park area. ?Mr. Dent was caught in the act of conducting a smash-and-grab along Tennessee Avenue in PSA 103. ?MPD also directly attributed one other smash-and-grab in the PSA 103 area to Mr. Dent. ?

As they say in the nautical services, "Bravo Zulu" to MPD and their police work on this case. ?Keep your fingers crossed that Mr. Dent turns out to be our perpetrator and we see a decline in the number of incidents in the area. ?If Dent is directly tied to our local incidents, we can help MPD and the justice system keep him in jail for a longer period of time by preparing "community impact" statements to help influence sentencing. ?I've asked Lt. Fowler to keep us informed and let us know if these will be useful.

In the event that Mr. Dent is not our perpetrator, I'd like to suggest that we continue with previously discussed prevention measures, such as periodic walks in the area, ride alongs with MPD, improvement of street lighting and extra vigilance in securing our belongings.

Best,

Brian

And though I never said this grownups should dress up too if they want to and join the parade :)

Hey Folks -?

?

In the four years we've lived here, the mail service was terrible from the get go -- we never had the same carrier. ?Carriers were often late into the evening delivering mail, delivering wrong mail etc. ?When we first moved here, we even had several packages stolen (we were getting married so got lots and lots of packages daily). ?

?

Once Tony started on our route, about 1.5 years ago, our mail, just our mail, started coming (we often had the old owner's mail despite their address change). ?It came every day around 1 - 2pm. ?And, if there was a package for us, he would ring the doorbell. ?If I wasn't home, he'd leave it under the stairs out of sight. ?

?

I also mail alot of packages from my house with flat rate stamps for my business, so I often put mail out to be picked up. ?Tony never misses it. ?

?

I can always tell when Tony is on vacation or off for the day -- or placed on another route. ?

?

From what I learned conversation with all the mail carriers, and I've talked to them all, no one likes our route - it's one of the longest. Before Tony started, we would never have the same carrier for more than a week, or a few days even. ?For awhile they broke it up differently, by block. ?About 2 months ago, Tony was reassigned to 10th Street and beyond, but not on our route. ?

?

To me, having the same carrier every day is huge. ?And, from my daily perspective seems to have worked very well. I am surprised others haven't had the same experience with Tony. ?He knows my routine, that I work in the basement, where to find me, and that the packages I send are safe (if you consider bluegrass non-toxic). ?Because I?work from home, I am very familiar with most of the delivery folks from UPS, Fed EX and the USPS.

?

Now, Tony has been off the route for the past several weeks - hence the late night deliveries. ?Sherman (our sort of new carrier who's now been assigend help) ?delivers later as he tackles the route differently. ?And he hasn't been picking up my stamped letters or packages. ?Sherman seems like a nice fellow, but Tony told me that the route is too big for him, which is why Tony has been helping with the route the past two weeks. ?I was shocked when I found my mail yesterday afternoon!?

?

And, today I was thrilled when Tony rang the doorbell, and had a package for Sammy!

?

And we always have kind words. ? Tony is the happiest mail carrier I've seen!

?

Tony is thoughtful, careful, mindful, knows my routine and needs and makes sure my mail comes and goes. ?I really appreciate him. ?And hate that I'm getting whacky mail service again.

?

That's why I like him so much!

Tony said someone had a petition going got get him back on our block. If so, I'd love to sign it and get help. If not, I'd love to start a movement to get him back.

Oooo, snarkier than I intended!? We¡¯ve got a lot going on this weekend, but would like to follow thru with the pumpkin/sticker idea.? So, if you have a rough idea of how many kids there are, I would appreciate it! Obviously, we don¡¯t want too few¡.

Thank you,

Catherine

Poll: ?Does being on business travel today exempt people from RSVP¡¯ing to a party for which the invitation went out 2 weeks ago?? Grrrr!? Yeah, it¡¯s that kind of day!

Well, since we never entered info, and I'm sure others also did not, that doesn't give us a very good count.

Hi,

I created a Database in the 11thSEblock Yahoo group so we could list the number of children each family is bringing, potluck dish, etc.

It's named Halloween Party.

Thanks,
angela

Thanks to everyone for pitching in! Looks like the weather will clear though will be chilly. For the parade I will bring some simple noise makers like drums, kazoos and such others should feel to bring similar stuff. I think the kids will enjoy that.

And though I never said this grownups should dress up too if they want to and join the parade :)

Brisket

Sorry, didn't feel like figuring out how to sign in to the database thing. Just wanted to let all know we are cooking a brisket, so that's our contribution.

See you later today.
