ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING OF YANKEE ROWING CLUB SUNDAY 4/24 4-6 PM via Zoom The Zoom link is at the end of this message. If you can't make the meeting, please review the agenda and Board recommendations below, and you may vote by email to rfsproull@... UPDATES The boathouse now has a motorized garage door opener operated by a keypad where you enter a 4-digit code. To close the door, enter the code again. When you renew your membership for the year (see below) we will send you the code. If you need it sooner, please send email to rfsproull@... or txt me at 617 515-0503. Membership and rack rates are likely to change this year (see below). After the annual meeting, I will send a message to the entire email list announcing the rates approved at the meeting. Gary Pellisier, the marina owner, has asked us to move the outdoor rack to a new, as yet undecided, location at the marina. Craig and I will endeavor to move it before the season opens so that boats can be returned to their locations as of the end of last season. When the river water temperature reaches 50F consistently, we will open the season for rowing club boats. Those with private boats are welcome to row earlier, but please note the river flow has been as high as 50,000 cfs lately -- very risky. ANNUAL MEETING AGENDA AND BOARD RECOMMENDATIONS The numbered items will be discussed at the meeting. The notation "BR:" is the recommendation of the Board. 1. Finance report: Leslie Smith, treasurer BR: Reduce last year's fees slightly because of firm financial position. Introduce modest fees for the outside rack. Membership: $ 475 (down from 490) Rack: inside $ 375 (down from $ 415); outside $ 100 2. Elect board of directors BR: Anne Teschner has resigned. Carol MacColl has agreed to serve. Full slate: Ernie Alleva, Jaime Caron, Jenn Ferree, Andy Larkin, Carol MacColl, Craig Schiff, Leslie Smith, Bob Sproull, David Wick, Moshe Wurgaft 3. Elect officers BR: Retain current officers Full slate: President: Bob Sproull; Vice president: Jenn Ferree Treasurer: Leslie Smith; Secretary: Jaime Caron 4. Appoint equipment committee BR: Anne Teschner has resigned. Full slate: Ernie, Craig 5. COVID precautions BR: Currently no mandates of any sort; follow Hadley guidelines. 6. Spring cleanup plan BR: Jenn to organize shortly after season starts 7. Reservation system for club boats BR: Continue the same system as last year; it seems to have made sharing club boats smoother. You can find the instructions on the spreadsheet at https://tinyurl.com/yrcreserve 8. Possible boathouse expansion. For quite a while, we have been discussing possible expansion of our boathouse space to include the "east aisle," a narrow section of our building just to the east of our current space. The size and shape of the space are not ideal, probably can accommodate only 8 rack slots. And the lease arrangements currently proposed by Gary Pellisier, the owner of the marina, are very expensive. BR: More study of configuration of the combined space, and formulate a counter-proposal to Gary's lease proposal. Also continued exploration of additional outdoor storage options. 9. New business & discussion ============ Bob Sproull is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. SUMMARY REPORT OF THE YANKEE ROWING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING, 4/24/22
6
SUMMARY REPORT OF THE YANKEE ROWING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING, 4/24/22 by Zoom **** NOTE CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP AND RACK RATES, below **** We're not quite ready to start the season. The water is too cold, and the flow a bit too high. Reminder of parameters: water at least 50F; flow at most 20,000 cubic feet/section (see YRC website for pointers to gauges) for rowing club boats. Those with private boats are welcome to row now, but please be cautious. The boathouse now has a motorized garage door opener operated by a keypad where you enter a 4-digit code: 1234. To close the door, enter the code again. While rowing, you can leave the door fully closed or partially closed. WARNING: This door does NOT have photoelectric sensors that stop the door to avoid obstructions (they are required for residential garage door openers but not commercial). If the door encounters a solid obstruction, it will stop; but it may not avoid crushing a boat. Gary Pellisier, the marina owner, has asked us to move the outdoor rack to a new location at the marina, still convenient to the boathouse. To make room, Gary needs to install a bit more of the finger docks. Then we can move the rack. *** Please don't put a boat on the outside rack until it is moved; we want to *** send Gary a clear signal that we will move it. If this causes a problem, *** please consult Craig or Ernie. Temporarily, you will need to bleed water from the hose by turning it off at the building and then opening the nozzle. We will restore the "Y" valve at the building as soon as possible. "BUSINESS MEETING" -- about 15 people attended; motions passed unanimously 1. Finance report: Leslie Smith, treasurer PASSED: Reduce last year's fees slightly because of firm financial position. Introduce modest fees for the outside rack. Membership: $ 475 (down from 490) Rack: inside $ 375 (down from $ 415); outside $ 100 2. Elect board of directors PASSED: Ernie Alleva, Jaime Caron, Anita F¨¢bos, Jenn Ferree, Carol MacColl, Craig Schiff, Leslie Smith, Bob Sproull, David Wick, Moshe Wurgaft 3. Elect officers PASSED: President: Bob Sproull; Vice president: Jenn Ferree Treasurer: Leslie Smith; Secretary: Jaime Caron 4. Appoint equipment committee PASSED: Ernie, Craig 5. COVID precautions Currently no mandates of any sort; follow Hadley guidelines. When at the boathouse, please respect wishes of others. 6. Spring cleanup plan Jenn Ferree to organize shortly after season starts 7. Reservation system for club boats PASSED: Continue the same system as last year; it seems to have made sharing club boats smoother. You can find the instructions on the spreadsheet at https://tinyurl.com/yrcreserve Problems or bugs to Bob Sproull 8. AGREED: More study of configuration of the combined space, and formulate a counter-proposal to Gary's lease proposal. Also continued exploration of additional outdoor storage options. 9. New business & discussion DISCUSSION This will be Leslie Smith's last year as treasurer. We are seeking a new treasurer; the duties are not onerous. Please talk to Leslie. Anne suggested, to general warm reaction, we offer some kind of "scholarship" to deserving new members. Discussion needed. Leslie reminded us that we make pretty liberal accommodations for members, e.g. summer rowers only, partial season, etc. New space? There was considerable discussion about space for boats, including thoughtful suggestions for mitigation: - We want to have space to be welcoming to new members - Could we rent racks inside one of the college boathouses? (Craig suggests this is unlikely; UMass has been shedding racks. There may also be insurance issues.) - Can we persuade Gary to price the "east aisle" base

BH clean up
8
All- I cannot be at the clean up on Sat, and had offered to clean the windows before Sat, but that task appears to be oversubscribed! Thank you, Nancy and Anita. I was at the BH yesterday and am wondering about the refrigerator and microwave. If these are two of the items that we are going to get rid of (and it would clear up some space in the back 40!), I offer to dispose of them next week. garments at YRC

Hi all These are the items I pickup yesterday, laundered and am returning shortly they will be on top of my yellow decked ocean boat!!. Please take a look and claim what is yours asap, certainly this week. I did NOT take and wash a light green cardigan sweater, and a light blue Patagonia windbreaker- raincoat. They are still handing there, saw no sense in washing. Carry on! Painting in back
4
Jonathan¡¯s idea to paint the back room would be smart. The back area is fairly moldy . We need some mold killer base coat like Kilz. And there are some painting tools in the large blue box against the river side wall: roller , tray , brushes ... Also a gallon of fresh paint on the floor . I¡¯ll be there as early as I can. We¡¯ll need hands on deck to move and load the Winntech rack. Lots of clean washed clothes sitting on Jonathan¡¯s Yellow boat . Collect what¡¯s yours if you can. I have a new heavy duty shower curtain with matching hooks and towel rack. I too have a Dyson , I¡¯ll bring it in. See you at 9:00 or so ¡. Craig we have Coffee maker there: feel free.

If you find Wing Nuts tough to undo under the Hatch of Peinerts et cetera
YRC Those wing nuts under the hatch are hard to reach. Use a Castle nut and it's easy. https://www.row2k.com/features/5682/rowing-hack--meet-the-castellated-nut/ Home Results Photo/Video Features News & Polls Calendar Events Camps Links Classifieds Shopping Social About row2k Features row2k features > Equipment & Hacks Rowing Hack: Meet the Castellated Nut December 16, 2021 John FX Flynn 3 5 Photo by Craig Schiff We've shared a few slick custom-made tools for loosening wing-nuts over the years, but Craig Schiff from the Yankee Rowing Club clued us in to a tool for this job that needs no making at all. Meet the Castellated Nut, and start making short work of the over-tightened wing nuts in your life. Also called a Castle Nut, this is a bit of hardware that we don't see much in rowing, but it just so happens to fill the "wing-nut tool" niche pretty neatly: the castled notches will grab the wings of the nut you need to loosen, and it easily fits in your hand (not to mention taking up very little room in your toolbox or pocket). The other place a Castellated Nut fits easily? Down through the port holes in the deck, for those times when you need to get at the wing nuts that hold the tracks. Those track fasteners are some of the trickiest parts to reach on a shell, as anyone knows who has had to contort their arm to get leverage on a wing-nut down under the deck. Photo by Craig Schiff In fact, when it comes to adjusting the tracks, you would be hard-pressed to have enough clearance down in the hull to get much traction with our usual wing nut hacks, like the Wing Nut Stick or the Broken Hammer Handle-er, and even a small crescent wrench never works all that well. The Castellated Nut, though, fits right on the wing nut without needing room for a handle and gives you just the right amount of grip to spin them loose--or to tighten things up and keep the tracks from sliding out of position in the first place. Schiff's hack reminds us of another way we looked at to use a bit of hardware to attack wing-nuts--those old Rigger Clamps--but there are not too many of those pre-Euro rigger parts floating around anymore, whereas you can pick up a Castellated Nut cheaply at any hardware store. We did get one bit of hack advice from Schiff: "Just make sure you grab a Castle Nut large enough for your paw to grip securely. It doesn¡¯t have to even fit the wing nut, as long as it catches the edges." He also pointed out that you could get fancy and spot weld a T handle to it for some extra torque, but that could limit the "under deck" usefulness of the Nut. Have a good trick that you use to outfit your toolkit? If so, share your tips--and hacks--in the comments below. If you have a great rowing hack to suggest for future inclusion, then please send it to us, like Craig Schiff did, and we will feature your idea in a future column. Boathouse door code etc.
14
Enter the code 1-2-3-4-ENTER on the keypad and the door will open. If you want to stop it, press ENTER. If you want to retract it, press ENTER again. To close it, you may be able to just press ENTER; if that doesn't work, enter the entire 5-key code (1-2-3-4-ENTER). I recommend that we keep the door CLOSED while people are out rowing. It's simple enough to enter the code to open it. Leaving the yawning cavern exposed seems too tempting. For club boats: don't forget we're using the reservation system: https://tinyurl.com/yrcreserve Bob

Mass 8, the one on wheels is out of commission.... A suggestion
Begin forwarded message: From: zooey Schiff <zzooey@...> Date: May 14, 2022 at 8:59:29 AM EDT To: zooey Schiff <zzooey@...> Subject: Mass 8, the one on wheels is out of commission.... A suggestion ? YRC members. The # 8 Maas on wheels is in need of repair. There was a wide split in the bow, the stern was worn away, and the skeg was kinked. So it will be a while before the number 8 is back. When you take the other Club Maas out may I suggest you get a hand from someone, at least to the slings. They are bulky and wide to grab. It's easier once outside our tight boathouse. ( The upper Maas is the Club boat, the lower Maas is Private.) So feel free ask for a hand to get it out; it's the easiest way to get any boat out of our tight boathouse, and everyone will help. There is no shame in taking a boat out with two people. (At Craftsbury, you are not even allowed to carry their boats alone.) I suggest it might be best to rethink our keeping #8 on wheels in the back. Especially with newbies, the boat gets rough use. If the bow is held too high the skeg and stern are scrapped. It gets dropped on the bow and cracked etc. When one learns to come into the dock, the bow gets hit. We've all probably banged a boat when starting to dock; it's a learned skill. Every year I repair or patch something on the #8. Considering newbies are usually with someone ( or should be ) and it is rare for them to row where no one is around the boathouse, perhaps we should try it back on a rack as before, if even outside. It also cleans out that back oar area, and is easier to get out of the boathouse. Those on the left side oar racks can see ( even with the #8 off the wheels and just pushed to the side) how much more room you have. Some new rowers have a tendency to think of rowing shells like those plastic extruded kayaks or canoes which they are not. Kayaks and canoe can take a lot of abuse, shells are delicate. Members who own boats know this, so maybe just a gentle suggestion here and there about handling the boats and oars could help. As to oars: we will be rebuilding the major oar racks but for now the best system is to put them Face to Face, then offset the Collars and put them in the rack. If we all do this there will be no oars crashing down. The racks are too close together for todays oars. We will be rebuilding the front right rack also with the Mass on it. There will be six boats on slings which includes one boat on a dolly. Thanks Everyone, Craig
