Re: Boathouse Spring Cleanup!!
Thanks, Jonathan. Anything we can do to clear out that corner of the BH would be welcome to those of us occupying “back 40”. I also think it is a great idea to clear out the various odds and ends that have accumulated in other areas of the BH. ? Unfortunately, I am out of town on May 7. I will come by before that and clean some windows. ? CP ? ?

**** NOTE CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP AND RACK RATES, below ****
We're not quite ready to start the season.? The water is too cold, and the flow
a bit too high.? Reminder of parameters: water at least 50F; flow at most 20,000
cubic feet/section (see YRC website for pointers to gauges) for rowing club boats.
Those with private boats are welcome to row now, but please be cautious.?
The boathouse now has a motorized garage door opener operated by a keypad where you
enter a 4-digit code: 1234.? To close the door, enter the code again.? While rowing,
you can leave the door fully closed or partially closed.? WARNING: This door does
NOT have photoelectric sensors that stop the door to avoid obstructions (they are
required for residential garage door openers but not commercial).? If the door
encounters a solid obstruction, it will stop; but it may not avoid crushing a boat.
Gary Pellisier, the marina owner, has asked us to move the outdoor rack to a new
location at the marina, still convenient to the boathouse.? To make room, Gary
needs to install a bit more of the finger docks.? Then we can move the rack.
*** Please don't put a boat on the outside rack until it is moved; we want to
*** send Gary a clear signal that we will move it.? If this causes a problem,
*** please consult Craig or Ernie.
Temporarily, you will need to bleed water from the hose by turning it off at
the building and then opening the nozzle.? We will restore the "Y" valve at
the building as soon as possible.
"BUSINESS MEETING" -- about 15 people attended; motions passed unanimously
1. Finance report: Leslie Smith, treasurer
? ? ? ? PASSED: Reduce last year's fees slightly because of firm financial position.
? ? ? ? ? ? Introduce modest fees for the outside rack.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Membership: $ 475 (down from 490)
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Rack: inside $ 375 (down from $ 415); outside $ 100
2. Elect board of directors
? ? ? ? PASSED: Ernie Alleva, Jaime Caron, Anita Fábos, Jenn Ferree,
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Carol MacColl, Craig Schiff, Leslie Smith, Bob Sproull,
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? David Wick, Moshe Wurgaft
3. Elect officers
? ? ? ? PASSED: President: Bob Sproull; Vice president: Jenn Ferree
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Treasurer: Leslie Smith; Secretary: Jaime Caron
4. Appoint equipment committee
? ? ? ? PASSED: Ernie, Craig
5. COVID precautions
? ? ? ? Currently no mandates of any sort; follow Hadley guidelines.
? ? ? ? When at the boathouse, please respect wishes of others.
6. Spring cleanup plan
? ? ? ? Jenn Ferree to organize shortly after season starts
7. Reservation system for club boats
? ? ? ? PASSED: Continue the same system as last year; it seems to have made
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? sharing club boats smoother.? You can find the instructions
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? on the spreadsheet at
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Problems or bugs to Bob Sproull
8. Possible boathouse expansion.? For quite a while, we have been discussing
possible expansion of our boathouse space to include the "east aisle," a narrow
section of our building just to the east of our current space.? The size and
shape of the space are not ideal, probably can accommodate only 8 rack slots.
And the lease arrangements currently proposed by Gary Pellisier, the owner of
the marina, are very expensive.
? ? ? ? AGREED: More study of configuration of the combined space, and formulate
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? a counter-proposal to Gary's lease proposal.? Also continued
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? exploration of additional outdoor storage options.
9. New business & discussion
DISCUSSION
This will be Leslie Smith's last year as treasurer.? We are seeking a new
treasurer; the duties are not onerous.? Please talk to Leslie.
Anne suggested, to general warm reaction, we offer some kind of
"scholarship" to deserving new members.? Discussion needed. Leslie
reminded us that we make pretty liberal accommodations for members,
e.g. summer rowers only, partial season, etc.
New space?? There was considerable discussion about space for boats,
including thoughtful suggestions for mitigation:
? ? ? ? - We want to have space to be welcoming to new members
? ? ? ? - Could we rent racks inside one of the college boathouses?
? ? ? ? ? (Craig suggests this is unlikely; UMass has been shedding racks.
? ? ? ? ? ?There may also be insurance issues.)
? ? ? ? - Can we persuade Gary to price the "east aisle" based on rack
? ? ? ? ? count rather than square feet?
? ? ? ? - Inside rack spaces are preferred: more convenient, safer
? ? ? ? - Consider moving some club boats outside, protected from the sun
? ? ? ? ? by lightweight "summer" covers (Craig has details)
? ? ? ? - With Craig's leadership, YRC has bought from UMass two more racks
? ? ? ? ? like our current one.? Depending on discussions with Gary, we
? ? ? ? ? may be able use these to add to our current 8 outside rack slots.
Some of the inside racks are very difficult to access, especially by
one person.? Among the ideas discussed:
? ? ? ? - Consider rotating "prime real estate" (perhaps also inside/outside)
? ? ? ? - Consider custom slings/dollies/wheels or other mechanical aids
? ? ? ? ? to simplify single-handed access.
Corrections, questions, etc. to Bob Sproull? rfsproull@...

? ? ? ? ? ? ?
