Gel coat colours
Hello
I need to make some repairs to the gelcoat on Anglo Marine no 579, and I'd like to match the colour as closely as possible. I can remember in the past seeing something on the old discussion group, or on the website about someone being able to match gelocat colour to boat number. I know I'm old and forgetful, but am I also making up memories? The hull colour is white-ish/ivory. I'm sure it has changed colour over it's 35 year lifetime so I'm quite prepared to make my own match, but I'd like to know if I can establish what the original colour was. Regards Neil Chapman 579 |
开云体育Neil, ? I recommend you contact Ian Porter whose firm took over the manufacturing licence for the Wanderer from Anglo Marine. ? I am sure he has experience of the ivory colour. ? Ian’s mobile is 07971 799602. ? Cheers. ? Philip Meadowcroft W1541? Black Mischief ? ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

开云体育Hi Talking about gel coats, has anybody any recommendations for a product to remove the white bloom that has developed on my cherry red hull.? Very many thanks? Best wishes to all John :-)? |
Hi John I use Faracela G3 with a soft foam polishing mop head at a fairly slow speed on my orange hull, just keep it nice and wet when cutting it back. She was very poor when I got her so I used a 1200 wet sand 1st but just the compound since regards Pete

I do pretty much that, but I'd personally only ever wet sand the gel as I find it gives a better finish and mops out easier

开云体育I'd be really nervous about going at it with sandpaper. I'll definitely start with the compound, but gently.? I'm only doing as sadly I'm looking to sell my wanderer ?? 开云体育Colour matching and mixing is so sophisticated nowadays it shouldn't be a problem to get a perfect matchMark Allinson On 28 Apr 2022, at 11:40, Neil Chapman <nhchapman@...> wrote:

开云体育Farecla G 3 rubbing compound works well but the problem returns after a year or two. Im told the trick is to get a really good uv barrier wax. Or a bigger coverMark Allinson On 28 Apr 2022, at 14:15, johnbohn01 <Johnbohn01@...> wrote:

开云体育My wanderer had the crimson hull and suffered the same problem. I tried loads of different products, including Polytrol, with varying degrees of success but the shine never lasted. I eventually had the whole hull resprayed then polished and waxed. It looked amazing. I bought a new cover with a 'skirt' to fully cover the hull and protect against UV. When I sold the boat a few years later she still looked 'as new'! Stephen Ex W1318 On 28 Apr 2022 23:48, "Mark Allinson via groups.io" <m.allinson2@...> wrote:

Just my thoughts on gelcoat... Auto Glym Super Resin polish (red label) is good for restoring the colour and shine. However it's a very fine cutting polish so it takes a bit of work to get the shine back. That said,? you don't run the risk of taking off too much of the gel coat like you do with wet-and dry paper of t-cut etc. Ideal solution is to use an electric polisher and save your arms! Also so long as there's no contamination you don't get any swirl marks in it. Regarding waxing the hull, this really does preserve the shine by blocking UV, but you'll need to keep adding a coat now and then. The other disadvantage is that because the UV breaks down the wax instead of the gelcoat, expect to have to keep wiping off the fine white polish residue that will keep appearing as the wax degrades. Or a totally different approach is to use a vinyl wrap. My Wanderer 910 was in poor shape when I bought it and the gelcoat was never going to polish up well. Also I wanted to change the colour. Photo below shows the wrap 5 years in. There's a little fade below the cover but it's all still sound. And in a couple of years I'll peel it and change the colour again! Jonathan Daniel
