Unbuilt Kits For Sale

I have two kits for sale: an Ensemble RXTX; and a SR63ng. I thought I would offer them here before trying eham or QRZ.com

Both kits are complete, and I haven't opened the parts bags. I'm selling them because I am having trouble soldering the surface mount parts. I no longer seem to have the coordination or eyesight that I once did, and the tiny SM IC's are especially frustrating!

The RXTX board is dated 5/24/10, and the SR63ng is Rev 1.83 (Yoyodyne Consulting). I'm asking $70.00 for each kit, including US shipping. PayPal preferred.

Please contact me directly: ko5v at arrl dot net

Ignore any message you might get from my SPAM filter.

Thanks. 73, Jim KO5V

Re: Question

I will look when I get back from the jam session. If they are still there (and not duplicates of what I have) I will be interested.

I don't see why not, Bill. What's prohibited are commercial accounts and
ads.

I would post it. Cecil isn't going to ban you for that. :-)

I have purchased two unopened softrock kits that were listed on one of the

but SoftRocks do get mentioned on some of the other lists.

Enquiring minds want to know.

Hello Leif,

Thank you for the detailed reply and the text and video links, I will
retire early tonight and have a YouTube session :) Much appreciated. I
hop your personal issues are resolved as soon as possible, your input
on several forums is invaluable and always piques my interest, even if
it sometimes goes a bit over my head ;) All the best. 2E0ILY Chris

Hi Chris,
I made several videos:
Initial testing:
Compare original and modified to a Perseus.
The modified is about 9 dB better than the original
and not far from the Perseus:
By use of a better soundcard than my modified Delta44
one could most probably improve by another 10 dB, maybe
even more and make the Softrock better than the Perseus.
The UADC that HB9DRI is working on would allow this and
most probably also the Pi-SDR IQ. One would probably
need some more mods to the Softrock to achieve this.
Maybe even replacing the Si570 by a X-tal oscillator.
One would end up with a single band Softrock having a
fairly narrow front-end and a set of selectable crystals.
Could be good for users with special interests....
Most users would be perfectly happy with the original
Softrock and a standard soundcard.
Here is a list ranking soundcards by reciprocal mixing
dynamic range on my modified Soiftrock. Best so far
is the Terratec DMX 6fire USB
- but it is not good at all for Tx:

Look 14:00 into the video. The noise floor is at -68
dBm in a bandwidth of 2.4 kHz with a carrier at
+30 dBm. That is at a separation of 20 kHz and might
be acceptable - but far from the performance on the
receive side. At a separation of 100 kHz the noise
is at -27 dBm in 2.4 kHz bandwidth. That is horrible,
the noise is -57 dB below the carrier in SSB bandwidth.
An SSB signal that peaks at S9+20 dB would lift the
noise floor to S3. Assuming that the unlucky amateur
neighbour has an optimized system with the noise floor
without an antenna at S0 and the noise with the antenna
connected at S1, the loss would be 2 S units.
20 dB above S9 for a 1W signal from a neighbour is not
unlikely...
I do have personal problems and my list of un-answered
E-mails goes back to July 25. I put prio on this one
because I am curious to know if [email protected]
works for me....

Re: KX2 schematics posted.

Philip Rose

Any difference in delay between clock edge in the LO and its effect on the output of the modulator is going to result in second harmonics of the LO appearing in the output. Only an exact 50:50 square-wave has no even harmonics.
CMOS by its nature requires an additional transistor to generate Q output from Q-bar, and adds an extra delay.
I've not worked with TTL but ECL circuits produced both true and inverse outputs from the same transistor pair.

KX2 schematics posted.

kx2 schematics on line.

KX3, KX2, mcHF are not a far cry from our little softrock.
si570(kx3 and mcHF) or si5351(kx2) clock have temp correction.

One thing I did notice. The flipflop and mux parts in the Elecraft radios are higher speed TTL components. Better balance?
Potato Semiconductor sells 3.3V CMOS parts almost as fast as the high speed TTL.

Re: Softrock Lite II: VFO instead of crystal for weird IF frequency

John,

that syndrome is consistent with:

* a dry joint (especially if a component wire is oxidised or otherwise
unclean)
* a hidden break in a connecting wire (most usually associated with a
solid, rather than stranded, conductor)
* a dirty contact in a switch (probably not relevant to this specific
problem!)
* a dirty contact in a plug & socket arrangement, or in an IDC connector
* a poor wire-wrap joint
* something loose (such as a stray solder ball near an SMT IC pin or
other component) that's shorting the output line (the IC will shut
down on a short circuit)
* two wires too close to one another, perhaps with a single strand
causing a short
* a single strand from a coaxial cable shield causing problems

Your photos don't show how the power gets to the board, or much detail of the assembled board itself.

Good luck with the project, 73,

Robin, G8DQX

Re: Softrock Lite II: VFO instead of crystal for weird IF frequency

Hi Bruce,

I'll keep that in mind, though I doubt that temperature is the issue. During testing the regulator was open to the air with plenty of ventilation. The behavior can be described like this:

1. 8v would be applied to the 5v regulator
2. The 5v regulator would typically not output any voltage
3. A bit of shaking of the wires would cause the regulator to put out 5v
4. Connections were checked, re-checked, re-soldered, and replaced without changing the behavior

My suspicion is that the black/red twisted wires (see imgur link above) were adding some capacitance to the mix and messing with the regulator somehow. I'm pretty new to homebrewing so this is just my best guess. I'll investigate it further once I'm back from vacation in September.

Cheers,
John VA7JBE

Re: Softrock Lite II: VFO instead of crystal for weird IF frequency

most 5v regulators have thermal shutdown if too hot. Result is 5V output cycling on & off. Maybe ventilation would help??

Whoops, hit the reply button early. My power supply issues aside, it was actually quite easy to get the SMD components soldered to the board. Thanks to this kit, I no longer fear flat pack components. My prototype seemed to work well, but when I attempted to move it into the (admittedly small) case of the CS-40 I started to run into issues. The 5V regulator would turn on and off randomly, I suspect because of some stray capacitance from the wires. The display wouldn't turn on, there were transmit issues, and as my vacation approached I knew that it would be a while until I could get back into it. I just wanted to say thanks for the advice, and leave you with these pictures of the project at it's last stage:

Cheers,

Re: Softrock Lite II: VFO instead of crystal for weird IF frequency

Hi folks,

I suppose it's time for a bit of an update to my project. The objective was to add an SDR receiver to an existing portable radio by tapping the IF with the softrock lite II and then doing the DSP with a Teensy 3.6. Unfortunately I've run into a few issues, mostly having to do with the power supply.

Re: Search messages is broken

Hi,

Another way to search for your posts is to put in your last name (or maybe yahoo/groups.io user name), and search. I did this and found all my messages. If it's a common last name, you may have to pick one of yours out of the results, and then do the "All Posts by this Member" thing. If you do that, you will see that each user has an ID number and there is a search code in the box e.g. "posterid:141759" for myself.

I tried it for the OP and did a search for "Louis" and it seemed to work fine.

Searching by "poster:emailaddress" worked for me too.

It might be handy if the groups.io tech people could give as a list of codes:arguments to use in searches, e.g. "poster" and "posterid" like we have already found.

73,

Mark.
