I can't seems to change the frequency on my v9.0. It seems to be stuck
on 20m, probably around 14.100Mhz. Changing frequencies, on both
Winrad and Rocky, has no effect on the spectrum, though the frequency
displays on the program suggests that the changes were made.

Using Si570_USB_Test, Read Si570 Registers produces:
Registers 7 to 9= FF Hex
RFreq=10233. 999
N1=127
nN1=128
HS_DIV=7
nHS_DIV=11
freq=83.11636

Attempting to change the frequency using "Set freq by value" does not
produce any changes to the register frequency.

Any ideas as to what might be happening?

The radio itself seems to be working. I received 20m signals from CQWW
last weekend and the RTTY contest today.

Yes, the only answer for most of us is to work around the problem.
It will only affect a relatively small number of us because Tony's version 9
does duplicate the SDR Kits controller.
Maybe one day someone will make a reprogrammed chip available.

V9.0 bypassing the LO stage?

A beginner's queston to WB5RVZ and other experienced builders.
I'm waiting for Si-570 to be delieverd in mid December.
May I bypass the LO stage and go further with Dividers-RX OpAmp -
RX Mixer. Will this influence the tests (current, voltage) results?
Or shall I be patient in order to succeed in building\testing the kit?
Please pardon my asking if this has already been asked and answered.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.
Serge, RW3ACQ

Re: testing I2C_USB

I have added pull-up resistors to the I2C lines from the 5V rail.
It seems to have solved the problem.
I think this "alan hardware patch" is the easyest way. Re-programming
the chip is not that simple since it has reset-disabled, means ISP
programming wont work.

That is if you need this patched at all, since observing the switch-on
sequence the original firmware does always work.

------

I got my firmware patched only because i like to play with those
things. The programmer did cost me a 100$. In the meantime i had the
code running on a attiny44 (needs external crystal), then an attiny26
(no crystal, but only 2kb flash). Waiting for a attiny461 chip now,
which will allow a no-crystal operation and has lots of spare IO pins
for bpf, cw-input, tx-signal, tx-swr reading etc, maybe even a blue
usb-activity led ?

I bought the acer last week, mainly to run my sdriq and sdr1500
(when released) "in the field". I ended up paying under $250 in
a "black friday special" with 120G hd and 1G memory. I have tried
it
with the sb extigy external usb sound card and it works well with
the 3 sdr applications i use (KGK, powersdr and Rocky) I also
tested
it with the hpsdr and it works well

Do not think of buying the flash ram version and trying to upgrade
to a HD later, unless you have VERY good motherboard soldering
desoldering skills, the ram is soldered to the board NOT
connectorised

There is a very useful "user" web site on this computer

I did look at the asus version, but I wasnt convinced the cheaper
looking keyboard would last field operation

People say that with the sdr-kit hardware it does not fail.
Hence they feel no need to modify the firmware.~
The reason is that the I2C lines ARE pulled high in that application.
But Fred says it is a bug anyway.

Having finished my tests of the I2C I also find that it is needed to have
the power applied to the RXTX for the computer to recognize the AVR.

Since it is a known issue is there anyone with the cure other than
connecting the power at the same time?
I have added pull-up resistors to the I2C lines from the 5V rail. It seems to have solved the problem.

I just used 12K resistors maybe a higher value would work.
It would be better to use a potential divider, I think it worked out that 33K to ground from the I2C lines gave 3V3 but it needs checking.

Hi Jose,

I think many people did patch the firmware, i also modified the firmware from DG8SAQ. My modified firmware will initialize the si570 when it comes on line. But I change more in the firmware to play around. I do not know what Tony plans to to with the firmware for new shipments.

SDR people say it is not needed to have the si570 or any other equ other than the I2C itself for the unit to be recognized.
Many thanks and happy SDRing

Si570 shipments

kb9yig

Good Morning All,

Seventy-five CMOS Si570 devices were mailed today< December 6, and
another 25 will be mailed on Monday, December 8. This group of Si570
devices cover kit orders received by me on or before October 28. The
next group of 100 Si570 devices should get to me by mid-December and
will cover kit orders through the end of November. December kit orders
will be covered by the 100 pieces of Si570 due in the first week of
January.

A new order of v9.0 Lite+USB Xtall circuit boards and BPF circuit board
were shipped on December 5 and should get to me by the end of the day
on December 9. Additional v9.0 Lite+USB Xtall kits and v6.3 RXTX+Xtall
kits should be mailed to kit buyers on December 10 and beyond.

I will try to get additional HF BPF kits mailed early next week to
people who ordered HF BPF beta kits. These kits will have what will be
the production board except I will saw the boards out of prototype
panels. A production quantity of the boards will go on order after
some initial tests with the new board configuration.

Thanks and 73,
Tony KB9YIG
