Running NanoVNA-Saver on Windows 7

I wanted to install NanoSaver on an older laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.
It has Service Pack 1 installed.

I downloaded and installed Visual Studio Community 2019, which I thought was the
proper thing to do after following the Link from Github.

Opening NanoSaver, I get to the screen with the blinking curser and get no further.

So, it looks like the Github link was not the right thing to do.

How does one get NanoSaver to work on Windows 7 ?

Thanks for the help.

Dick, W1KSZ

NanovnaSaver should work without issue if you're running the EXE file on Win7 with SP1.
How long did you let the screen with the blinking cursor sit for?
Did you close it after a few seconds?
The first time you run the EXE, there are some tasks that need to complete in the background - that can take up to a minute.
There have been other discussions regarding that in the forum.

Dick,
Rune develops NanoVNA-saver on a Windows 7 computer so it definitely runs on that operating system. On his GitHub page, , he states, "The downloadable executable runs directly, and requires no installation. For Windows 7, it does require Service Pack 1 and Microsoft VC++ Redistributable. "

Hi Dick -

I downloaded and installed Visual Studio Community 2019,
which I thought was the proper thing to do after following the Link from Github.
My experience with Python from Visual Studio Community (on Windows 8.1)
was that it did not add that Python to Windows' default path,
which I did, then still had to add pyserial, etc.

Yes, it will take a moment before the program starts, but here too NanoVnaSaver works on 32 bit Win 7.

Hello Dick,
as others have mentioned, I do build the binaries on and for Windows 7 32
bit - at least for as long as Microsoft will allow me to, we'll see :-)

On first startup, the .exe unpacks a temporary Python environment,
including the requirements - PyQt5, numpy etc. This takes a while - and
crucially, some forms of antivirus have been quite unhappy with it! So if
you have a third party antivirus software, it *might* be blocking this
operation.

I don't want to recommend that you disable your antivirus on principle. But
if you have downloaded the executable from my github page, it should not
contain any code that your antivirus needs to protect against.

I hope you figure it out, and that you enjoy using the software!

Here is a link to a document that gives a detailed procedure for preparing Windows 7 to run NanoVNA-Saver:

I have now purchased the NanoVNA-H and installed the NanoVNA-saver without any problems. It worked on the first try. I just had to enable lines in the setup because there were only dots.
My OS is W7PRO/SPK1/32bit

My Kaspersky Total Security protection blocked the running of NanoVNA-SAVER on my PC until I put it on the list of safe/allowed applications.

Thanks for all the replies. The Tutorial is particularly helpful.
I will report back my results.

Tnx es 73, Dick, W1KSZ

Dick,

I had similar problems and was not yet at the time aware of all the help files.

For my Win7 setup, learned I needed a few updates. Here's the summary from the help provided me my the group.

-----------------------------

When attempting to install and run nanovna-saver on my old win-7 laptop, there were two specifically related problems:

1. missing: api-ms-win-core-timezone-I1-1-0.dll
2. missing: Microsoft VC++ Redistributable library
Both for Program Files (x86) [as I discovered]

Did some on-line searching for the first one and found warnings to make sure the DLL was valid...ooops??
It occurred to me that the DLL might be used by other installed software and it was. Had to be valid** so I CTRL-dragged a copy to the Windows/sysWOW64 folder, ---That took care of problem 1.

Problem 2 needed more help and a message to the group with a reply by Rune Broberg led me to the Microsoft VC++
Redistributable library. I found that from Microsoft Downloads: Downloaded it, ran it, and problem 2 was fixed.
----------------------------------

It was actually 3 problems:

In addition to the above, I was directed to the needed driver from STMicro... which became COM4 for me!

Have Fun...

help i have win 10 and don't see anything that looks like an executable on that page. just py files

Nigel Gunn, G8IFF/W8IFF

That's all you need.

I have win 10 64bit
The comments below refer to running the EXE file. Where do I get that? As I said all I can find are PY files. For a non computer geek how do I run PY files and which ones or how do I turn them into an EXE file?
I'm an old radio guy not a computer whiz.

Hi Dennis

I¡¯m very far from being an expert but I get the files from here:-

If you look down the page you will find ¡®Windows Latest¡¯ amongst the ones for other operating systems. I use that with Windows 7 64bit and a H4.

I think I found it.

Thanks All

See my post from a few weeks ago. I had to build a version of NanoVNA Saver 3.10 specifically for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 in order to fix this error.
