New book on the NanoVNA

There is a new book out on the NanoVNA. Targeting potential buyers and first time users, "A guide to the NanoVNA" introduces the concept of vector network analysis before turning to the specific hardware of the NanoVNA and popular retrofits. The chapter about firmware shows how to operate the device standalone, whereas another part of the book gives an overview about software solutions and their pros. The final chapter details some use cases and how to tackle them. The book contains 50 pictures and is available online at the Kindle-Shop ().

Sorry for hijacking this group with the above courting, however it is on topic and might be of help to some readers. Don't expect a compilation of 9000 threads, though ;)! The idea of the book is rather to alleviate the absence of a manual in the box, which I consider the highest hurdle for the NanoVNAs popularity.

Vy 73 and a happy New Year!
Chris, OE1CGS

Thank you so much for letting me know about this book. I have been
stumbling around with my NanoVNA and getting good results on some DUT's and
non-existent results on others and not really knowing why! This book
fills in the blanks!

First time I get rewarded for being patient, went to the amazon page for the book and noticed its free to me due to having "digital credit" for consolidating amazon deliveries on my choice of day of the week. Bought it!

Will it become avail on any other media?

Chris,

there is no need for a Kindle E-reader, as it is possible to read Kindle books on many devices like tablets, smartphones and computers. Check for free apps and online readers.

Concerning media, I'm sorry but we do not intend to publish in any other form currently.

Congratulations on the book, both, what a great gift for the Ney Year! Just been watching the concert from Vienna.

- I would have liked to see more on the NanoVNA-F, as it's a little different from the basic model.

- As recent models (basic and -F) include an easier way of updating the firmware, perhaps give that prominence over the earlier method (but keep that for reference).

- i hope that Amazon will be able to offer updates at no charge. I've seen that on other books. I can see the updates coming quite frequently!

Thanks, and a Gutes Neues Jahr.

Chris,

Got the book. Looks good on my laptop with reader and my Fire Android Tablets. Large display on the laptop for easy reading an OK on the tablets for reading on-the-go...8^)

Thanks

There is nothing in the 'Book' that is not already published on the groups.io
site.
YMMV but I think I would prefer the groups.io resource.

Normally I would agree with that, but for three bucks I'm happy to have this easily accessible on my vintage kindle Fire as portable as the NVNA is. Another THANKS! to Chris.

???? I agree!? I too spent the 3 bucks, and I think it will be convenient to keep on my phone.

HI

I too spent the 3 bucks. I just received my NanoVNA about a week ago. I
have been reading this group for a couple of weeks now. It is nice to have
a lot of beginner information in one place.

FYI, my Nano that I bought on Amazon failed to charge. The blue LED would
flash for hours, then go on steady. It would not power on when I unplugged
the cable and switched it on. It would work okay while plugged in. I sent
it back for an exchange.

Looking forward to playing with my Nano. I want to try the TDR measurements
on my new antenna installation.

Mike,

To be up-to-date, I agree with you.

But for ease of carrying - not to mention actually having a contents list and searching - and when you are away from the Internet, the book is unbeatable! I do hope it will be kept up-to-date, and perhaps it can be offered via Lulu (does that still exist?) so that folk who prefer a printed copy can obtain one.

Cheers,
David

Thanks for this book. I bought the NanoVNA some months ago, but never had the time to dig through all the forum information about it. The authors of the book have now done it for me. Based on their book, and in an hour or so, I have been able to add the battery diode, update the firmware to the large letter AA-version, and started to use it.

David,

as far as the NanoVNA-F is concerned, I'm sorry but I have to disappoint you. We do not own an F-model and have no intentions to buy one, so chances are very low that we will extend our book there. However, as a member of this forum you will be aware of the talk concerning the NanoVNA-H V2. Depending on the final outcome of this model (features and pricing) we might extend the book accordingly.

I haven't been aware of Lulu up to now, but will check into that.

Hello,
I'm waiting for the mine non-model H that I bought a couple of weeks ago,
and I want to use it as Antenna Analizer up 900 or 400.

What is the most appropriate firmware? Can I use the firmware for H models?

Noted, Chris.

I would hope that if you asked the makers on the NanoVNA-F, they would provide you with one on loan, perhaps to keep, as your book has obviously proved popular based on the feedback here. Of course, having the NanoVNA-F in your book would help to increase their sales.

Yes, I'm aware of the possibility of a newer model, and I would likely get one if:

- the coverage is significantly greater (3.5 GHz minimum, 6 GHz highly desirable for 5 cm etc.).
- it works with present software (e.g. NanoVNA-saver).
- the screen size is at least "4 inches".
- the size is similar to the present NanoVNA-F.
- the price is similar to the present NanoVNA-F.

Whether it comes from the NanoVNA or the NanoVNA-F suppliers wouldn't bother me providing support and service are good, and it's legitimate.

I would check with both Amazon and Lulu, but from both I've seen "updated versions" at a low cost, or free of charge to the original purchasers. I don't know how that works, though.
