Which Firmware Version?

W5DXP

I am presently running the 300_ch (9-11-19) version of the firmware because I use the NanoVNA primarily for HF. I see that the latest version is edy555_bugfix (10-1-19). Would it be a good idea to install the latest version even though I don't need the UHF function? In general, how does one decide which version to install?

Normally, you really don't need to upgrade if the device is working well for you.
Typically, one would upgrade for two main reasons:
1. New functionality
2. Bug fixes

The latest edy555 release fixed 3 bugs per the github release notes, so you should probably upgrade to that version.
You don't need to use the extended frequency if you don't want to.
The device will still work normally for your needs after it is calibrated.

Cheers,
Larry

For some reason, edy555_bugfix wouldn't run correctly on my device. In particular, when I hit "back" during calibration, the menu disappeared from the screen. Then when I touched the screen that same menu came back leading to an endless do-nothing-loop. I reinstalled 300_ch and everything works normally.

After firmware upgrade you're needs to perform touch screen calibration. If you don't do that, touch screen may works incorrectly.

In order to do touch screen calibration, open CONFIG menu and press TOUCH CAL.You will need to press upper left and bottom right points with a thin match. After that open menu TOUCH TEST and check touch calibration, it should draw line at exact point where you touch the screen. If it works properly you will need to press SAVE to save touch screen calibration.

W5DXP... I've noticed that... You need to "hit" the "back" with less speed....

Is there a NanoVNA Menu Structure Map for the edy555? I see that OFF/SINGLE/BACK doesn't exist on the edy555 version and CONFIG has appeared. Any others?

yes, they don't needed. You can juse touch trace several time in order to enable or disable it.
CONFIG allows to perform touch screen calibration and save touch calibration.
I didn't find other changes.

There are a couple of additional selections added besides "config". Under the "display", "transform" has been added with a number of possible selections. Also, under "display/format/more", a number of useful selections have been added: "real", "imag", "resistance", "reactance".

Hmm. Can newly installed firmware detect that it has never been touch screen calibrated and automatically start in TOUCH CAL the first time?

Any time you push new F/W to the device it is good practice to re-cal the touchscreen.
Now, with that said, I just updated one of my units and found the touch surface was still calibrated.
So - if you see the touch is off at any time - most likely on the menu selections - do a quick cal.

How does one calibrate the screen?

Mike,
Did you checkout the user manuals in the "Files" section of this group? Basically there are two methods:

1. If you have the latest firmware installed then there is a new menu option that allows you to perform a screen calibration.
2. If you have the original firmware then you have to connect the NanoVNA to a computer and use a terminal program to perform the calibration.

I did not get that from the user guide.? But your explanation works for me.? I have not connected with a terminal program yet...
Thank!Mike WY6K

Stupid question of the day : Where is this located ?

Tried the Files folder.

Maybe it would be good to have a sticky message that lists all the many places that firmware is available ?

Okay - snooped around the wiki, yet I still couldn't find edy55_bugfix (10-1-19), for example.

Look for?? edy555_nanovna_v2.2-sept-30-19.dfu? or similar.
That's the bugfix version.
You can always go to the TTRFTECH github releases page:

Read the latest Oct 2nd version of the User Guide in the files section on how to convert HEX or BIN files to DFU so you can update the flash on your Nano.
