NanoVNA vs. NanaVNA-Saver
#calibration
Hello all together,
I'm slightly confused how calibration parameters are used when running NanoVNA as stand-alone device or when connecting to Saver SW. As stand alone I calibrate NanoVNA as described, save that as C0...C4 and device is working fine. Now, when connecting to PC/Saver-SW it says "calibration active: Source: Device calibration". That is clear so far and I assume it is using that calibration set which is shown on the device (C0...C4) (I guess I do not need to recalibrate the NanoVNA-device in this situation running under VNA_Saver ?) What happens when I run the VNA-Saver calibration process on PC? (These new parameters can also be saved on disk, and be recalled later.) Are these new paramters be downloaded to the device and premanentely replace any Cal data there ? Or will they be downloaded to the device and just be used temporarily there? Or are these Cal sets ignored by the device and only be used by VNASaver ? If not used by the device, there are two different calibration sets then. One used by the device (e.g. C3), but VNA-Saver on PC is running on a different set of parameters? That would lead to different data results between NanoVNA-LCD and Saver-PC data ? I just want to be clear how that is handled between the device and Saver-SW, I'm not calling for any new feature :-) |

Very well. So is your calibration kit now type N, SOL and Thru or Type BNC?

This sort of thing has been going on for quite awhile. Please let us all know where to purchase one of these 2TB memory sticks!!???? They are all over ebay and amazon.? All scams, of course. You may receive -something- for you $15, and the first time you plug it in (and heaven help you if it's a WinBlows machine) it might even say "2-terabyte" capacity. Try to store anything on it and you will quickly find out that it is not a 2-TB stick, but more than likely a 2-GB stick which has had its innards tinkered with to report false capacity data. And likely, modulo some version of the "WinSucks" operating system, you are now infected with a load of crap that may require a complete system wipe to be shot of. The scammers have been doing this sort of thing since anything bigger than a 4-GB memory stick was huge and expensive. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Re: #Shielding
#shielding
Bill,
In order for a shield to be effective it has to be continuous and grounded. Adding shielding inside perimeter of the case with conductive paint would be in-effective because there are too many other gaps for interference to penetrate. Adding shielding on the board, near the SMA connectors has not been shown to make a substantial difference in performance by other members of this group. How to test if additional shielding was beneficial? 1. See how well the NanoVNA operates in the vicinity of a radio transmitter prior to and after a change in shielding. 2. Measure CH0 LOGMAG and CH1 LOGMAG with both channels terminated in 50 ohms, before and after shielding. A lower noise floor after a shielding change means the shielding was effective (increased isolation between channels or blocked rf bleed over from internal clocks or other sources. The NanoVNA is not FCC or CEMark certified. It may or may not operate suitably in a noisy RF environment. At home in a hobbyist workshop it should be perfectly fine, as is. - Herb |
Re: #Shielding
#shielding
I just received my NanoVNA. Mine turned out to be the model with the black front and the battery on a plug. There is no shielding on the board near the SMA connectors. I printed a case for it that fits very tightly. I am wondering if it is worth the trouble to paint the inside perimeter of the case with conductive paint. I think that I have just enough left, If it is worthwhile, how do I test that it mattered.
Thanks Bill - AB6OR |

You're actually better with an external USB SSD hard drive. It's a lot faster than a stick.

Re: coax fatigue

I finally mounted my Nano onto a piece of aluminum. I have very little use for SMA connectors and the cal kit supplied. Now I am doing most everything with BNC but can also used N connectors. Hope the pictures I uploaded made it and can be viewed. I also added a strain relief for the USB cable.
The toughest part of adding the N connectors was to get a pair of short semi-rigid coax SMA to SMA jumpers close to the same length so I didn't over stress the SMA's and the PCB on the Nano. I scavenged the aluminum, the N connectors and the sr coax from some old piece of HP test equipment. I found that careful use of an Exacto knife makes it possible to modify lengths of sr coax with SMA's. |

how to " rebuild " the whole firmwarelinks at second line of /g/nanovna-users/wiki/Building-Firmware and e.g. I may even try to add my own "project" to keep the rest untouched. That is the purpose for git; create a branch |

Oristo,
perfect answer. I gust I need to add wiki to list of resources. A follow-up questions / comments I have not figured out how to " rebuild " the whole firmware , working on that step. I assume that I can modify any of the "project" and then "rebuild / recompile" the whole executable firmware. I may even try to add my own "project" to keep the rest untouched. Making progress thanks to group contributions. Appreciate that very much . |

This is the wrong place to ask about ChibiOS.?? Send the repo owner a message asking about it or just got here:? ? ? ChibiOS is a real-time executive that is used on the Nanovna.?? The Nanovna-F uses the RTOS equivalent to ChibiOS. ...Larry On Thursday, November 7, 2019, 1:28:44 p.m. GMT-5, vaclav_sal via Groups.Io <vaclav_sal@...> wrote:

Thanks! I installed MS VC ++ (multipack 2005-2017) as suggested, but Saver still gave the same error message. To others: My Vista machine is my "old friend" and I will keep using it as long as possible. It has so much 'stuff' I need and use that migrating would/will be a very long, very frustrating and very difficult job. Or I would have done it already. I do already have a lower-end Dell laptop with Win_10_Prof., but it's such a big change, using Win10, that so far, I don't. I got the Dell so that I could use PSKReporter, which also doesn't work with Vista any more. It did last year, though. I'm not desperate to use Nanovna-saver, I Just thought it would be very useful. I suppose that, now that I think of it (and know about the limitations) that I can set up the Dell/Win10 machine to use with the nanovna. But need a couple more SMA cables and adapters first anyway. Rune - Thanks for the explanation! Now I know that it can't work, that there is no way to fix it (on this computer). That was the reason for making this post. Doug |
