This is a "where is Waldo" on the menu spider-web question. How do start a rescan after I change parameters? Is there an FAQ that beginners should read? A "NanoVNA for Dummies" book that you can recommend?

Cable Fault Detection
I realize this is similar to a recent topic but a bit different.
As the "TDR" function in the nanovan is not actually a time-domain process, is there a wat to differentiate between a short or open fault in a cable? I have previously built a generator which can produce a very short pulse or a step with fast risetime. I have used it in conjunction with a scope as a TDR. It works reasonable well and you can clearly see an open or short in a cable. Is there a way to replicate tis with a nanovna? |

The Nano's TDR function can show 'defect' location - even multiple "feature" locations. It shows distance in meters. You move the cursor to the "odd spot" in the trace, and read the distance to there. That works well, but the start and stop frequencies must be correct for the distance range that you want, and you must set the cable velocity factor.
There is a good video on using the nanovna to measure coax length, by W2AEW, on youtube. That method will also show any fault or discontinuity location (distance, in meters). -- Doug, K8RFT |

A true TDR sends out a short pulse and looks at the time it takes for that pulse to return.
The NANO VNA sweeps frequency and notes where the frequency when reflected impedance approaches Infinity and Zero Ohms.? ? ?Different resonate points? ?Then calculates the length of the line from it's resonate points.Same result, different methods.?? I own 3 TDR's and a good TDR will show you where along the line the coax has been stepped on, has a defect, or even where some water has leaked into the line.? The Nano is not going to get to those levels, but what do you expect for 20 dB less money?? ?? The Nano works in the Frequency Domain, a TDR?
