NanoVNA-H (apparently a worse clone) Firmware compatability? #firmware

Hi All,

It's a bit exhausting and somewhat confusing, reading through the messages and topics to see if this has been addressed previously, so my apologies if it's been covered.

Purchased more than a couple years ago before I was aware of the clone wars, it appears that I have a "worse clone" of the -H hardware as evident by the font on the "NanoVNA" label on the lower right and lack of shields on the PCB. There are no version numbers or identifying marks on the PCB.

I have added the shields on the board, but unaware of any other issues with it.

Currently has eddy555's 0.8.0 firmware loaded and seems to work for my simple needs so far but wondering if there is a newer/better firmware for it.

Suggestions please!

TIA

Rich

Is that like the Turbo Encabulator award? (I already have 3 of those ;-)

As DiSlord mentioned, this document is a great source of all the

Enjoy - there's a LOT of info !!

Backup restore settings only for stored on flash slot (not work for RAM calibration data)
By default loaded 0 slot (if no backup enabled / on error / no battery)

Only LiteVNA
- Added USART support, now possible connect and control device over it (like on H / H4). You can use any BT / WiFI / USB to TTL dongle. Or control from external CPU.

All V2
- Now support 401 measure and calibration points (NOT INTERPOLATED)

LiteVNA
- Support up to 1001 points (NOT INTERPOLATED)

Only H / H4
- Now correct reset USB connection on software reset (H4)
- Init i2c bus devices on low speed, change on max speed after (i hope this allow fix problem vs hang on first power on)
- 2x increase wait time for SD card (also hope this fix errors on old slow cards)
- Added new v3.6 hardware support (maybe a replacement SI5351 on MS5351), see Expert settings

!!!! V2Plus4 firmware work only on old V2Plus4 devices, new V2Plus4 devices have different LCD module not supported by this fw. As last V2Plus4 sources (software and hardware info) closed i not support it. !!!

PS thanks Hugen, sponsored the support of these products (you also can help via PayPAL )
PSS finally i update all code, cleanup and made release

Re: Measuring the output impedance of a 20m push-pull power pre-amp #transformer

There are times when you ideally need to look back into high power amplifiers with a VNA. One (good) reason is to look for negative resistance. I've done this with wideband power amplifiers that normally produce 10-50W across maybe 30MHz to over 1GHz. It can be wise to do this across various bias points to see if the amplifier can ever go unstable (i.e. generate negative resistance at certain bias points).

Care is obviously needed so the VNA can't be damaged but it isn't difficult to set this up safely for the VNA.

I'm using Firefox and it works for me so it isn't as simple as that. I suspect that Vince's suggestion is in the right direction.

Unfortunately this isn't going to help Billy as the software found at that link is just the DfuSer Demo software which he already has. Its just a bit of an insight into what is going on with some of these sites.

Quick question

I just received a V2PLUS4
I uploaded the nanovna-v2-20201013-v2plus4.bin without issue
Wanting the extra resolution, I tried to upload the V2Plus4 1.069.bin,
however, I end up with a blank gray screen.
I tried it multiple times with the same result.
I go back to the 20201013 f/w and it works fine.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?
I got the binary file from that pack of several different versions...am I
in the wrong place?

Re: Measuring the output impedance of a 20m push-pull power pre-amp #transformer

I'm continuously amazed by the knowledge shared on this site and I want to thank everyone for spending the time on this.
A special thanks to you Manfred! Your posts are thorough and full of wisdom.

Anyway, I managed to implement some of the changes suggested and perform some tests to eliminate culprits, etc.

Firstly, having studied Manfred's suggestions, I changed the output transformer to a FT50-43. Unfortunately, I don't have any binocular cores and they're hard enough to get in this part of the world that it'll certainly be the new year before they'll grace my bench. Secondly, I recalculated and rewound the transformer for a 150 ohm collector impedance. That's more than 1 watt, but I figured with the various losses in my circuit it might be better to aim for a higher power output (boy was I right!) In the end, I chose 14T:8T and opted for a 7 turn trifilar with a final turn for the secondary (50 ohm side). The final transformer can be seen in the test jig pictures below.

I hooked up the new transformer and lo-and-behold...20Vpp! My 1 watt achieved! But wait...sadly...I'd hooked the transformer up the wrong way around!:-) What a goose.

So, if I present the collector with around 15 ohms I can achieve my 1 watt. So, I guess the culprit is most definitely the 2SC2078s. I bought them from lcsc.com, a relatively respectable parts distributor and I had asked if they were the high-gain types (the original 2SC2078 were sorted into various beta classifications). They assured me they were, but who knows. Anyway, you were right Manfred, they're pretty rubbish.

To definitively rule out the output transformer, I decided to put what I've learned here to good use and I measured a) the leakage inductance b) max freq before serious power loss and c) the reflected impedance as per Dave's suggestion.

The results are in, this with the FT50-43 at 14.2MHz (my preferred design freq) and 14T:8T:

The basic inductance test showed that the jig was working fine. I measured 29uH for 8T @ 1MHz, which is more or less what I expected.

The leakage was 4.33+j112nH @ 14.2MHz, so that's 10 ohms of reactance.
Freq at which reactance reached 20 ohms = 30MHz, not too bad

and finally... as shown in the image below...and I'm quite impressed by this! The reflected impedance with the secondary terminated in 50 ohms was 150 ohms real.
Not sure if I did that correctly, but it certainly looks good!

So, my thoughts at this stage are that I could live with the transistors I have and the windings that produce 1 watt (that I accidentally found!) or I could try looking for better transistors or as Manfred suggested, I could just go with FETS. That would be a significant redesign and I probably wouldn't get away with just hacking my board as I've been doing up to now.

Anyway, it's all progress!!

Re: Confused Newbie - Connected

I wish you guys would quit jacking me around. I followed your instructions implicitly and saved a file named NanoVNA-App.htm. Opened it in a text editor. Looks like a standard website html folder. opened it in FireFox. Yep opened fine, looks like jusr recording some x = value entries for a lot of x. Tried it in zip, rejected, not a zip file.

Billy,

There is nothing wrong with any of the links in his email. You have an issue
with your browser.

Click on the his first link. When that page opens, right click on the word
'here'. Now left click on 'Save link as'. Select a destination on your PC
for the file. And just in case you don't recognize the file type; it is a
compressed file using the 7zip. You will need to unzip the file.

And while you have your browser open:

1. Left click on the Menu selector in the upper right corner of the Firefox
window. That is the 3 horizontal bars icon.
2. Now click on Settings near the bottom of the list of actions.
3. Scroll the General selections down to Files and Applications.
4. Now scroll so that the Applications section is on your screen.
5. Click on Compressed (zipped) Folder. Is the Action (right side) Always
Ask?
6. On the end of that line now there is a down pointed arrow head. Click on
it.
7. Click on Save File.
8. Now close the Settings Tab by clicking the X on the end of the Settings
Tab.

Now click on that same link or another one. You will no longer be given the
prompt to Open or Save a Compressed file while using Firefox. Your only
choice is to Save it.

I have tried to download the NanoVNA-App as recommended by Larry Rothman. I
searched FireFox for "Nanovna-App".

Got:

1) => Got NanoVNA-App is the very powerful
windows software developed by OneOfEleven for NanoVNA and LibreVNA.

You can download the per-compiled software here. "here" leads to a full page

2) => NanoVNA-Web-Client / WebApp

NanoVNA-Web-Client/WebApp was developed by cho45 and can be used by
accessing using the latest version of
chrome browser.
(The link => blank page)

PLEASE ANYONE! Is there anyway to search for a simple PC download such as
NanoVNA-App with out multiple dead-ends and goobygook. In all my years, I
have never seen such unorganized and in-accessible data. I just do not

Do not try to tell me where to find NanoVNA-APP, please explain this filing

Larry,

I do not mean to be impertinent or insulting nor do I want to offend you, I

I quote you:

"I have modified the GUI of DefuseDemo and placed it in the files section.

You might as well as say "Go to FireFox", grab the zip'ed file!" You make a
high level generalized statement and expect someone who does not understand

Now to explain, WHAT FILES SECTION? I go to
/g/nanovna-users and click on
/g/nanovna-users/files (THE FILES SECTION?). I get a
gobblygook of what could be write-ups; who knows from the explanations. I
see nothing about a zip file or Larry Rothman. I finally see down on entry
8, Firmware. So I click on it. I see five entries with Larry Rothman as
author; all leading to PDF files. four of these five have firmware in them,
alas which one?
1) First one goes to "hugen's firmware release notes as of Oct 9, 2019" and

3) Third, same as Second!
4) Just quit and give up on this frustrating trip.

Larry, when dealing with a Newbie, you have to present a clear map to
follow. PLEASE copy and post a clear, specific starting URL. Then YOU click
on each URL and post the next specific URL and the specific full name of the
item to click on. Continue doing this until you have led the Newbie to the

I do understand you want to and are trying to help. This often happens when
a professional tries to help a layman. You cannot comprehend of anyone not
understanding the terms you use. I had a Physics Professor that used to
write a complicated expression on the board; stand back and look at it; say
the answer is CLEAR; write CLEAR on the board; say QED, and write QED on the
board. The class got up a petition to the Professor requesting him to go
through each step solving the equation before reaching the QED. Next class,
he wrote one of his famous equations on the board; stepped back and looked

Billy,

I understand your frustration so I will help get you started.

The NanoVNA uses 2 drivers to communicate with the PC. One is when you want
to exchange data with a terminal or application program like NanoVNA Saver.
The second is when you want to update the firmware by loading a "DFU" file.

In this post I will only cover the first.

Windows 7 does not have the driver installed for exchanging data so you have
to install it manually. The procedure to download it from ST is cumbersome
and requires registration for some reason. So I have placed it on my Box
clouid drive for you to easily download. Here is the link:

Once you have successfully downloaded it you need to unzip it and install
the driver Win 7. There are 32 bit and 64 bit depending on what type of CPU
you have in your PC. Do not plug in the NanoVNA until after you have
installed the driver. When you plug in the NanoVNA after installation you
will hear Windows "bing" and you will set it in the Device Manager as a COM
port.

Next step is to install NanoVNA Saver. You will find it at this link.

Download the Windows 32 or 64 bit version, unzip and install. Then run it
and patiently wait - it often takes 10 seconds or so to load because it is a
Python program and it unpacking the support routines. Then in the bottom
left hand corner it should show the COM port of the NanoVNA (Rescan if
necessary). Click "Connect to Device" and it should plot in the graphs.

This will get you started. In the Wiki for this group and on Youtube there
are tutorials on how to use NanoVNA Saver.

and patiently wait - it often takes 10 seconds or so to load because it is a
Python program and it unpacking the support routines.

Billy,

It seems like you are seeing different things than some of the rest of
us. For instance when I click on the first link on the page linked to I
am taken to a web page which has the following:

When I click on the button marked "Get Software" it takes me down the
page where I see another button labelled "Get Latest" which, when
clicked starts on a process which allows downloading the DfuSe Demo
software.

Hardly a dead link. What are you seeing?

Dave
