Re: Nano VNA SAVER graphs of a 40m loop antenna

Francois
Losing 10 dB is HUGE for a closed 40m ¡°loop¡± compared to a 40m dipole (doublet).
That makes no sense.
Something is wrong - bad coax, mismatch, ¡. ?
Neither of my 40m antennas is showing any directional preference - as excpected, as they are only 20 ft elevation.

Re: Nano VNA SAVER graphs of a 40m loop antenna

This 40 m closed loop (140 ft) has only been in operation for about two weeks.
So far, it does as well as my simple 1/2 wave dipole (at same height).

I found each of these four graphs complimented the others:
SWR and RETURN LOSS indicated lowest SWR just below 7.0 MHz
PHASE graph - I love that one - shows where reactance is zero
Smith Chart - actually tells me everything - if you know how to read it

I only wanted this 40m closed loop for short-range NVIS daytime propagation for a MidAtlantic NBEMS net.
This new net will attempt to cover PA, NY, NJ, MD, DE and possibly New England if prop holds.
This 40m NBEMS EMCOMM net will be starting this fall:
Saturday 0900 hr EDT on 7068 kHz with THOR 22
Sunday at 1000 hr EDT on 7068 kHz with THOR 22 or THOR 11
Traffic: EMCOMM messages only like Severe Weather Reports, ICS, spreadsheets, etc.

I have a 40 ft vertical that does well at night, for low-angle DX.

The graph originated in SAVER.
I took a snapshot of the screen (ALT-PRINT SCREEN).
Then pasted that into a simple PAINT program (free) to add some text.
Nothing fancy. All the software was free.

Hello Shirley. I am very confused. I feel I need to update my NANOVNA-H 4.

Current version is 1.1.01, build time Dec 20 2021.

The unit has a flickering blue line at the top of its screen. I am hoping an
upgrade will help.
Back to this original statement of the problem:
For SWR measurement, the 1.1.01 software build should work fine, so you may not need to upgrade. There are lots of new features in the newer versions, but nothing that should affect SWR traces.
What is the nature of the 'blue flickering line"? Could it be the blue trace line (at the top of the graphing area)? A trace line could appear to flicker if it is set for data that is not present.
If so, maybe all you need to do is disable the blue trace. On the menu go to Display -> Trace and click on any traces you are not using to disable them. For SWR, you probably want trace 1 enabled, and its format set to SWR.

Re: dfu_util command line for updating firmware please ?

David,

I had a similar problem. DFUseDemo was loaded with the Bootloader driver which I use with STM32 CubeProgrammer for my Malahite DSP2 receiver. It uses the bootloader mode to update firmware. Sometimes when I exit it saves the bootloader driver.

To change drivers for the DFU Mode perform the following:

Start DFuSe Demo. If it does not detect any device in DFU mode do the following:
Start the Device Manager
- Under "Universal Serial Bus devices" you should see "STM32 BOOTLOADER"
- right click on "STM32 BOOTLOADER" and select "Update Driver"
- select "Browse my computer for drivers"
- select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
- Under "Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware". Check the "Show compatible hardware" box
- You should see the "STM Device in DFU Mode" and "STM32 Bootloader" drivers.
- Select the "STM Device in DFU Mode" driver.
- Select "Next" and it should display "Windows has successfully updated your drivers" Close this box
- The Device Manager should show:
"Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
"STM Device in DFU Mode"
- DfuSe Demo will detect the device in under DFU Mode.

Hi John.

My Device Manager says that it is STM32 BOOTLOADER. I cannot seem to get a driver for the software. I went into the location your suggested. Would you have another idea?

Thank you.

StmDfuUsb app for Android...

Re: The NanoVNA has an app?

This is a Windows app what made DisLord...

- start the exe file after download, search "upload VNA firmware" button then choose the "NanoVNA H4 v.1.2.24" button for your H4 device...

Yes, possible make a fw update from phone, but I never tried:

for example:
WebUSB
here is the topic:
/g/nanovna-users/topic/34347906#3654

or this:

- also exist some kind of application for iPhone...

Re: STM32 Bootloader...

- sorry on the picture just the dfu file

- but You can also download the app in the same way.

Re: STM32 Bootloader...

You can see the picture attached

Re: Guess I need BIN and not DFU, but I need help...

David McGuire

Thank you for the link, but when I tried I received this message:

404 - page not found
The main branch of NanoVNA-App does not contain the path Win32/Release*

Re: DFU mode not working #nanovna-app #nanovna-h4

if You see STM32 BOOTLOADER,

- then You can use the app for fw upgrade.

- You do not need anything else, firmware included:

The NanoVNA has an app?

David McGuire

Istvaan,

I went to the URL and received this message: (Sorry about that, but we can¡¯t show files that are this big right now.).

Can you tell me about the app? Will I use it from my cell phone? Will it be an icon on my Windows desktop?

Thank you.

David

Re: STM32 Bootloader...

David McGuire

I did not know there was an app. I went to the URL and it says that a file this large cannot be viewed at this time.

Re: Unwrapping Phase

Thanks, Roger. I've seen plenty of NanoVNA App plots here, but none with phase unwrapped.

Re: Guess I need BIN and not DFU, but I need help...

for the NanoVNA-H4 the app already included the latest firmware...

here is only the fw:

STM32 BOOTLOADER
is good if you using the app

- here is the latest version from DisLord:

The simplest and most problem-free for firmware update.

Re: Unwrapping Phase

NanoVNA App has graph selections for S11 and S21 phase unwrap. This program only works on Windows and I prefer it to NanoVNA Saver for several reasons (easy graph selection, better scaling options, robust calibration, better measurement comparison)

for uploading use nano vna APP

Hello. Reading Shirley's post, it looks like I need BIN and not DFU files for my NanoVNA-H 4. I currently have version 1.1.01.

In the files section is see Lite VNA2 62 v 1.3.02.bin, NanoVNA H v1.2.08.dfu, V2 320x240.bin, and V2 480x320.bin.

I am not able to get DeFuSe Demo v 3.0.6 to connect to my Windows 10 laptop and its USB3 ports.

Thank you for your guidance and help.

Re: dfu_util command line for updating firmware please ?

on my v2plus4 and my saa2n (a v2 clone with 4 inch and n sockets) the upload of a new fw is with pressing the left (connectors down) or the right (connectors up) button to switch the unit into bl mode .. in your case pressing the jog dial in is the same as when i press MIDDLE button (not left or right!!) ... so you need to press jog dial sideways? and switch on to get the unit in bl mode (just a guess)

for uploading i use nano vna APP (nice frontend, easy to use and besides using the nano with it you also can make SCREENSHOTS from the nanos display)

STM32 Bootloader...

David McGuire

I have been reading the Absolute Beginner's Guide, especially the pages referring to installing the correct driver, page 37, and following. In Device Manager I see Other Devices, STM32 BOOTLOADER. I have followed all of the steps and no driver can be found. Any ideas? Thank you.
