Re: "SAVE" stores what ? #manuals

In latest fw v 1.2 there is an option to Save Calibration and to Save Configuration.
Moreover, the Calibration (within a frequency range) could be saved into a "Slot" (you have 7 slots for Save/Recall_0..6 in nanovna handy, where the slot is stored in the free rom flash on the mcu chip), or, you could save the Calibration on the SDcard (when available).
You can then "load" the calibration or the config with "Load Calibration" or "Load Config".
I discussed that a couple days back with Dislord on his github, as I was not sure how the Save/Load Calibration actually works.
You may store almost unlimited number of Calibration "slots" under a "file name" on your SDcard (each slot file is 16kB large), and then to replace a specific Slot in your nanovna with that configuration anytime. That require a sequence of steps, however.
Mind you will save only a single "currently active slot" on the SDcard under a name you like (you do not store all 7 slots).
I have, for example, about a dozen of various calibration slots saved on my SDcard and I can Load one of them into any of my slots in nanovna as I need them.
To describe Saving/Loading Calibration slots in detail would be a good enhancement of the user manual, as it is a pretty useful feature, and mastering it would definitely help you when working in the field.

For the professional VNA analysers, Do they put atorroid chokes on those?
I was wondering.

Re: "SAVE" stores what ? #manuals

CONFIG->SAVE
Save device settings from config (like touch calibration, threshold, vbat_offset, colors)

CALIBRATION->SAVE X
Save calibration and trace/marker settings

After calibration if use DONE, device ask SAVE data to any slot (you can skip this)
DONE IN RAM just apply calibration (not ask about save, but you can save it after by CALIBRATION->SAVE)

Good riddance...

Re: Where to buy

P. S.
It has the SD card connector installed. I also just easily installed a Bluetooth module.
Super nice 4 inch screen.

Hi,
I just purchased a new NanoVNA H4
Version 4.3, from R&L Electronics in Ohio U. S. .
They are on of the best recommended outlets.

White screen on NanoVNA SAA-2N

Following is a new topic post I tried on the NanoVNA V2 users group. (I got a message on the Messages page which said that it would be reviewed by moderators, but it hasn't showed up yet.) So I'll try here also:
"Although this discussion is a bit old I thought I'd give it a try, mostly because my SAA-2N has the same page on Config view: 20200617 and 1a9a11d. While trying to update my firmware, as I moved the usb plug from Win 10 machine to an iOS machine, the screen went white and has not returned. Does this sound familiar? I've tried every combination of screen taps, button pushes, on-off switch and cannot get back to any normal page. I opened up the case to see if the screen ribbon connector had come loose again but it was fine. No components seemed fried, looked like new. Is there a reset button ir procedure that anyone knows about? Yes, it is a clone but a highly recommended one - I hope I didn't fry it! tnks!

Anyone have any good ideas? tnks! bob.c

Re: Off subject - nanoVNA forum no longer on Facebook #nanovna

Hello,
I just did a search on facebook using
"NanoVNA,TinySA"
As a surch heading and found the group you are refering to.
Do not use "NanoVNA and TinySA"

Last year this person posted to the group and was the cause of some disruption. I think they were kindly requested to go elsewhere.

How to make nanoVNA "bulletproof" ?

Anne Ranch

Little over statement in the title , but ...

Again - started using the nanoVNA , to tune antenna, about two weeks ago and

1. it is HOT in Huston and impossible to read the display in direct sun
2. after "transmission line theory " is dutifully applied - the "portable "
miniature analyzer looses its both advantages as "miniature " and "portable".
3. it is better to keep USB connected and keep battery alive
4. after I get nanoVNA-saver to behave I won't need the display anyway
5. in future I may add "calibration switch"....

actually it is of great disadvantage
hanging on USB cable and on pretty stiff end of RG6 ( that what I have to work with ...)

I do not want fancy "enclosure " and I an not stupid to break the SMA connectors -
I need to nail the nanoVNA to the top of my desk !

...more overstatement ...

Seriously - I have what used to be antenna rotator aluminum plate , about 1/4 inch thick
I can cut to size of nanoVNA , add some " rubber feet" ...

Would that work ?

Open to ideas ... no Altoids boxes , please...

Re: "SAVE" stores what ? #manuals

If you want to come back where you last were, and no memory 0, on the later firmware(s) there is an advanced option "maintain state" that will cause the device to power back on exactly as it was powered off.

After I par6tially read one of the "beginners guide" I did same as you did - made a copy of published document and started annotating it....

PS
As far as "SAVE" goes - I am sure I was "doing it wrong" , but after pushing "DONE" I got an option to "SAVE 0 thru 3 ".
Now if I can repeat that process every time, I'll be a happy camper...

PPS
It still looks that after cycling power - SAVE 0 is "loaded" as default....

Re: Where to buy

There are at least 2 different screen types, too, I believe. I started with a very early 2.8 inch model but just could not use it outdoors. The screen was essentially unreadable in bright light, especially sunlight (and I was working on an HF6V - in Florida).
So then I bought a -F model with IPS screen, and it works pretty well in sunlight. I have not seen the newer -4 models, though. They might have an improved LCD. Many users do seem happy with them. The -F model uses a different firmware than the others, and a slightly different, simpler method of installing the firmware.

When you order your NanoVNA, be sure to order the connector adapters that you will need with it. I have adapters for PL259, SO239, male and female BNC, and for the "F" TV connectors. Plus a BNC-to-dual-Banana jack, which is very handy for wire antennas and for measuring toroid coil properties.

It's the "etc." that troubles me. Where do we find exactly what is saved for our firmware release?

Actually, as I understand it, the NanoVNAs evolved from a hobby to merchandise. The story is prolly on the web for you to find.

More to the point, now, I suppose, is how each of us can use them effectively...

I try to always state which device, device model, and firmware revision I am working with...
nVNA-H4 v4.3_MS, firmware 1.1
Because the various devices, models, and firmware revisions can act differently, it's important to be clear, so when I ask for help, someone who knows my device can chip in.

why is internet full of "wannabe" experts publishing and mostly copying stuff with little regards to facts?
This is broadly descriptive of the internet these days. We have made the image of knowledge more important than the actual knowledge. I suppose the there are those who want to give the impression that they are knowledgeable, so they copy and republish. Plagiarism is a thing of the past. Unfortunately, most of it, IMO, is a waste of bandwidth, because after the first person publishes, the copies are useless.

But we have, at least in the US (though it seems a global condition), gotten to the point where we don't take the trouble to actually learn something, but rather to go through the motions. For example, I am a ham. I often have hams come to me with basic ham questions. OTOH, I wonder why they don't know the answer to questions the needed to answer to get their license. OTO, I don't really wonder. The trend today, from virtually every quarter, and here I include academia (teaching and research since the mid 90s), is to reward answers (and in academia, cheating), rather than understanding. The dean of my college once remarked to me that a student had complained about my teaching, saying "Prof M expects is to study outside of class." There are 2 things wrong there, are there not? One is that a student is so convinced of his case that he is willing to make a written complaint to the dean; the other is that this pretty much reflects the state of education in the US today. Unfortunate. I trust that none of this is a surprise to any reader in the US? See Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). I simply try to help those who ask questions, but I am likely to start at the beginning, and lay a foundation...teach a person to fish...

It is, unfortunately, difficult to determine the facts when so many are so busy scattering myths. Onc can't simply take the word of any person or website until they have vetted them or it. More time wasted.

But the nVNA crowd is actively supporting confusion. Those who actually might have concrete answers don't take the time to organize them for others. Which brings us to ...

I did same as you did - made a copy of published document and started annotating it....
No quite. I started from scratch. One of the items I produced is a menu map, because the menu structure is complicated, and I need to refer to it often when I am using a feature new to me. I published the map in image form, and I published the source so that anyone can update the map for themselves when a new version is released or they just want a different presentation. It's pretty easy. Much easier than cutting and pasting menu blocks.

Then I created a "user manual". I started with simply building the menu structure in hierarchical text form, and began filling in what I thought to be correct. I then expanded that to include notes as I encountered them on various lists, and I could (I hoped) verify them. I made the manual available in PDF and source, so that anyone can update it. I don't expect that to happen, because it has not happened in the past few years of evolving nVNAa. Think of me as a secretary, not as an nVNA expert. Nonetheless...

We have become a nation of non-readers, for the most part. So many won't even read the manual or the menu map, I suspect. But they will post questions here.

As far as "SAVE" goes -
I don't know all that SAVE does. There are 2 paths for SAVE. I imagine that one stores initial settings from a cal, and the other provides a path to save a configuration that is modified in a way that does not affect the cal. For example, changing what traces are displayed with that cal. Not sure about that. See the menu map and user manual...and be sure to tell us what device, etc., you are using.

It still looks that after cycling power - SAVE 0 is "loaded" as default....
True...has been that way since ... ??
And now there are ways to save and reload configs, at least on the H and H4, I think...not sure...and that will make it way easier to manage many different configurations and calibrations.
