This calendar is brought to you by the friendly volunteer collective of the Madison Infoshop, c/o Social Justice Center, 1202 Williamson St., Madison, WI 53703. As a volunteer run collective serving the greater WI community, we also offer a safe organizing space with a wide range of activist resources including books, zines, periodicals, art supplies, topical files, graphics, megaphones, and button makers. We also host episodic reading groups, film discussions, and radically inspired cultural events. The Madison Infoshop is whatever its members wish it to be!

Mon. Jan. 6^th 7:00 pm Rights of Nature – monthly virtual meeting hosted by 350 Wisconsin. Guest speaker is Anahkwet (Guy Reiter), executive director of the Menominee community organization, Menikahnaehkem. Anahkwet will discuss key principles, such as the right of nature to be protected from harm, the right of ecosystems to regenerate, and the right of communities to defend nature from environmental degradation. He will also present case studies of the successful integration of Rights of Nature into legal frameworks, such as in Ecuador and New Zealand, and will examine the growing movement to enshrine these rights in national, state, tribal, and international law. Sat Jan. 11th – Sun. Jan. 12th, 2025 Wisconsin State Capitol Building Unity Gathering – with virtual links statewide! During these two days, a wide diverse variety of organizations and individuals will share ideas, strategies, and fellowship for building a more just and livable future. Keynote speakers include: Rep. Francesca Hong; Alder Laressa Taylor, Janan Najeeb, Emilio De Torre, and John Nichols. Saturday evening there will be a community supper and a concert at the Crossing (1127 Univ. Jan. 17^th 9:00 am – 11:00 am Virtual Community Discussion – Preparing for Potential Impacts of Trump 2.0 – with Layde & Parra SC, law firm based in WI that specializes in representing immigrants. Drawing on experiences from the previous administration, we will offer insights on what to expect in 2025 and how community partners can support the immigrant community in this time. Fri. Jan. 17th 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm Atrium (2300 S. Park St.) JustConversation - Breaking Barriers: Justice & Disparities in Dane County! This panel discussion will examine critical issues affecting our community, including racial disparities in law enforcement, prosecutorial discretion, and the impacts on equity within Dane County’s criminal justice system. Fri. Jan. 17th 4:30 – 7:00 pm UW-Madison Gordon Commons (770 W. Dayton St.) MLKJ Community Dinner! Kick-off the King Holiday weekend with fellowship and this free annual MLKJ event. Dinner served buffet style will include fried and baked chicken, mac n’ cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, sweet potato pie, and more. Mon. Jan. 20th 5:00 – 8:00 pm Overture Center (201 State St.) 40th Annual Madison & Dane County MLK Day Observance! Freedom Songs Sing-Along, followed by welcoming with Bishop Vashti McKenzie. Bishop McKenzie was the first female elected to office in history of the AME Church. She is currently President/General Secretary of the National Council of Churches where she provides executive leadership to 37 denominations, 100,000 churches and 30 million people. She was appointed by President Obama to the White House Commission of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and named one of the 50 Most Powerful Religious Leaders in the World by Huffington Post. The program will also feature the MLK Community Choir and presentation of the 2025 MLK Humanitarian Awards by Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Dane County Executive Melissa Agard.
