Incoming calls on iPhone 13 Pro routed to voicemail
My wife’s phone is running iOS 17.x (latest release). She says she’s not changed any settings, but for the past few days incoming calls have been routed to voicemail after only one audible ring. I confirmed this was happening by calling her phone from mine. She had at least 30 active apps runnng. I power cycled her phone, but that didn’t help. However, after i closed all those apps, the phone would ring normally. Is it likely rhat some setting has been change inadvertently, or that all her memory was allocated within the OS, and that that was the reason the calls were diverted?

Did you check to be sure Do Not Disturb is off?

Yes, i did do that. The hallmark of what’s happening is that her phone rings once before the call is diverted to voicemail. I though be happening because she had SO many apps open, and after terminating them all and rebooting the phone, it seems to have stopped, but i remain concerned that it might reflect an erroneously configured setting. |
18.0.1 is the latest release Jim.

I meant my statement to mean that she had not upgraded to iOS 18, but that she had fully updated to the latest release of iOS 17.

That was my guess too, and might still be the case (although I don’t use either of those spam-blockers), but when my wife’s MOST strident “I need a new phone, RIGHT THIS INSTANT, protests gave me the right to “interfere” (try to help), putting my phone next to hers and initiating my call bases on my contact entry for her phone, her phone rang once and then started its “I’m busy now so leave a message” recording. I THINK (but don’t know for sure) that she was also experiencing one-ring reject calls not listed in Apple’s “Recents” list. I showed her the latter (5 in number), and she was unable to tell me whether there were more calls she couldn’t get to before her phone stopped ringing (each of those five was from someone also in her on-device contacts list.

开云体育Sometimes it helps to force restart an iPhone or iPad. ?Although Apple only mentions doing this when your device stops responding, I’ve found that it can also help when a regular reboot doesn’t solve a problem.? (One can select the iOS version near the top of the article.) It’s possible for apps to have bugs that affect memory usage, which as you suggested can affect the whole system, in spite of app sandboxing. One of my family members opens many apps, as well as many instances of those apps. ?If nothing else, that practice ends up confusing that individual. ?Every once in a while I end up closing all but a few apps on that person’s devices. (Yes, I showed that person how to close apps, but that person never does it.) ?With that said, Apple says not to close apps, as it’s more efficient for iOS to handle how the apps run. ?IOS will make apps inactive if they haven’t been used for a while and the resources they use are required elsewhere. ?Personally, I detest clutter so you can guess how I handle this on my devices, even though it’s supposed to be harder on the battery. ?YMMV. I occasionally have my call go straight to VM on my iPhone XR. I had not thought to check how many apps I had running in the back ground.

I play to games that need an internet connection. When too many apps are open, one pauses with spinning arrows like a spinning beachball. The other may slow a bit, but often it still moves, but with no sound. Have your wife close a few apps throughout the day. I had previously call my cellular provider, and all they do is update the software involved in the quality if my cellular connection, which does nothing to fix the issue. Your post, gave me the clue to think too many open apps might be the cause. I also live in an area that only gets 1 or 2 out of 4 bars of cellular signal. That area has a radius of about 2 blocks of my home. The rest of the area gets 4 bars. Brent On my iPhone Xr On Oct 16, 2024, at 18:05, jimrobertson via groups.io <jimrobertson@...> wrote: |
开云体育I find that upgrading the OS almost never resolves an issue. It is seldom a bug in the OS by the time an new whole integer OS is available.?I know this issue has been around since as far back as iOS 9. And as I said in a recent post, I think it is related to too many open apps. I had a iPhone 4s with 32 GB of memory, and have an XR with 64 GB. Both have experienced calls going to VM on one or no rings on my end, and issues with incorrect behavior on other apps. Brent ?

Realize that if you get her a new iPhone, it will come with iOS 18.x 3. Have you tried a force-reboot of her phone?

开云体育Apple very seldom backs down on a change like this. I think it is also a very loud, but otherwise reaction to change.?The loudness of the compaints caused me to delay. I requested an explanation as to what was the issue for the complaints. I got no response, not even one. Then I realized it was just resistance to change. So far only one article, not on the list, has said that the increase number of steps to accomplish what used to take only one step was the author’s reason for complaining. But he also listed what those actions and extra steps were. All the functions seem to be there, just with more steps. Brent ?

开云体育I still think it is that she had too many open apps for the amount of Memory the phone has. I mean, you tried to make a call and it went to VM. You closed a bunch of apps and the call made the phone ring more than one. Hypothesis, test, confirmation. Now they it several more times when she has a bunch of apps open, and see the results.Besides DND, have you checked the other settings of Focus? If you don’t have the call blocker apps on her phone, it can’t affect her phone. Are you sure she doesn’t have your number blocked? ? It also doesn’t matter if you phone is next to her’s. The call still went from your phone, to the cell tower to her’s. A few feet from between the phone is nothing compared to the mile or so to the tower and back. Brent ?

Whenever I reboot a phone, it’s because of a problem. I do it by pressing and holding one of the left sided volume buttons and the right side button until the choices of “call for help” or “power off” appear. I don’t know if that qualifies as a “force-reboot."

Yes. She doesn’t use any of those, actually, and DND was not active.

开云体育That method restarts the phone. ?To re-boot it follow these steps (it will take several seconds for the Apple logo to appear):
