Re: SSD Tip!!!

开云体育

I have never had a system where this setting wasn’t a problem, which is why I know the Terminal command for this:

sudo pmset disksleep 0

I’ve had this setting off for years. It’s implementation is terrible. It spins drives down constantly, increasing wear and tear, not decreasing it. If you have an SSD system drive and the OS is spinning down your external spinning drives, you offset your speed advantage as the OS is constantly waiting for the HDDs to spin up anytime you access the file system even if the HDD isn’t actually needed. It doesn’t know, so it spins it up. And by the way, your drives will spin down anyway when sleeping, eventually. Many modern externals will spin down on their own when idle, regardless of the OS, and many ignore the OS and spin constantly regardless.

Cheers,

Internal Drive has become Unbootable

Sorry for this duplicate post. I forgot to include my name below in the original. Thank you.
==============================================================

Last night I backed up the entire contents of my internal drive (Ventura OS) to a newly purchased 4 TB Crucial X10 portable SSD. The backup took time as it was over 3 TB of data but it went seamlessly as I am able to boot from the external SSD and all looks good on the receiving end.
Upon restarting using the internal volume for my startup I now am faced with a black screen with the following dialogue, "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press any key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." The dialogue disappears but reappears over and over. I rebooted from newly created backup to check the contents of the internal drive and found that everything appeared to be in place. While using the external disk as the startup I ran Disk Utility on the internal drive several times which indicated Ventura as the operating system detecting no errors. However I was surprised to see that after checking "Get Info" when clicking on the Macintosh HD (internal drive) in the Finder that Version 14.2.1 appeared as the OS indicating Sonoma!
I restarted the computer in Recovery Mode to see if I could rectify the problem that way. Again I ran Disk Utility while in Recovery Mode on the internal drive and again it indicated Ventura as the OS with the First Aid diagnostic showing no issues. At that point while still in Recovery Mode I chose the reinstall Ventura option in the belief it may be corrupted. When I chose the internal HD for the reinstallation it was grayed out with the prompt "The operation couldn't be completed." com.apple.buildinfo.preflight.errorerror 21.
Any ideas what may have happened as I don't know what to do next in restoring the startup capabilities of the internal HD. I'm nervous about it being corrupted.

Email delivery stopped two days ago

I have a grandfathered Google Workplace account used by members of my family since the service first started and ok-ed by Google when they eased out the free accounts a while back. All worked well until about the 3rd of Feb.
?My Gmail.com addresses work fine, only the family account is silent. Mail doesn’t show anything from ‘family.net' and gmail.com is visible on it too.
?All this absolves the home networks of family members and seems to be a Google issue. I’ll try again to get some help from them although free users are largely on their (our ) own…

Have any of you had this problem before? Are any quick ways into Google support?

There are many things that can effect connection speeds.?

Compost, uh, I mean Comcast, uses coaxial. Jim S said he uses “gigabit” fiber optics. That is the biggest cause for the increased speed, but location, number of connections on a node and how many people are actively using the internet all can effect the speeds. Think of a highway at rush hour, compared to off times.?

Location and distance to the serve used in the speed test also has an effect.?

Now, if you can ?T1 connection, you could beat Jim’s speeds. But are you willing to pay to have the infrastructure installed and pay for service. Basically, you are comparing a stock, off the showroom floor domestic car, against a Formula One race car.?

Thanks so much for confirming what I’m experiencing. Did you do any searching to see whether others had experienced this? It looks as though you’re also composing in formatted text.

I just discovered something that might be reproducible, because this is happening to me fairly often: If I place the cursor at the very beginning of the “unwelcome” text and try to drag through it, it disappears and the correct text returns. I don’t yet know whether this is consistent, but if it is, I’ll have something to report to Apple and even demonstrate to them. The problem is that this is SO unpredictable!

This is provided through a fiber-optic connection all the way from the ISP to the home.?
Fiber comes into the Network Interface Connection on the wall of my house.

The distribution within my house is (a) coaxial cable to 2 locations for TV hookup, (b) Category 6a ethernet cabling to multiple rooms, and (c) Wifi everywhere.

The Wifi is limited to "only" about 400-450 Mbps because that's what I had available in 2019.

Prior to getting this, I was unable to get ANY cable service and subsisted on DSL that maxxed out at about 2.8 Mbps (that's an hour for a 1 GB download, if it didn't get interrupted).

Strange happenings when composing text in Apple Mail

For the past few weeks I’ve been bedeviled with seemingly random mishandling of typed formatted text while I’m composing mail on my 14 inch M3 Pro MacBook Pro (running Sonoma 14.3). As I type, unpredictably, whole sections of previously entered text will be replaced by OTHER sections of previously typed text. Sometimes this seems to follow the computer’s insertion of additional characters via the newly added capabilities of the predictive spell checker (completing words in advance or adding an almost always following word to the one being entered), but sometimes that does NOT seem to be involved.

When it happens, multiple sequential UNDO commands may restore what was messed up, but sometimes not. The same holds true for multiple presses of the delete key. Prophylactic “saving” of a long message as a draft doesn’t seem to prevent this, but saving as a draft, quitting from Mail, then re-launching mail and opening the draft message again DOES seem to help. AND, curiously, sometimes it’s not possible to use the cursor to drag-select newly inserted but misplaced text.

Since I don’t use plain text mail, I ‘ve not tested whether or not this bug happens using the text-only engine. I’ve not seen it happen in other apps. I’ve not yet seen it on my phone or my iPad Pro.

I didn’t find others complaining about this in brief web searches (or targeted searches in Apple’s Support Communities sites). I’ve not reported it to Apple yet, because I’ve not been able to reproduce it with a stereotypical response to intervention attempts that I could demonstrate while screen sharing with support.

So, I’m curious whether anyone else here who uses Apple Mail and writes in formatted text is suffering as well.

Thanks so much,

Kudos to Apple Tech Support

Two days ago, I took a bike ride during which my bike computer, getting data from my Apple watch (Series 7, GPS + Cellular), occasionally reported pulse rate drops to the 50s while I was peddling at 18-20 mph (more typically the reports averaged 100-110 beats/min). I did not feel pre-syncopal or even dizzy, and I wasn’t short of breath, so I suspected something amiss with the data source. When I got home, I tried to record an ECG from the watch, but it failed repetitively. I scheduled a phone call with Apple after rebooting the watch and confirming it was current on software updates.

The support tech went through each of Apple’s recommendations for investigation ECG capture failures, then had me upload logs from the watch (stored on my phone) to Apple via an interface deep in the paired iPhone’s settings for the watch. Then he had me unpair and re-pair the watch and attempt another ECG (which also failed). To make sure it wasn’t a “biological” issue, we had my wife attempt to record an ECG from my watch, which also failed.

I have AppleCare on my watch. He offered me two alternatives to get my watch to Apple for inspection, then repair or replacement. I chose the second of these, which involved sending me a replacement watch pro-actively, ?and placing a hold on my credit card for the retail price for the replacement, with a commitment from Apple that when my misbehaving watch arrives at Apple, the hold on my credit card would be lifted. Apple would then either repair or recycle the watch I sent them, meaning I’ll have no “down time” without a watch, which is good news because I need to travel tomorrow. My watch seems to work fine EXCEPT for the ECG (and possibly the heart rate) apps.

I don’t think anyone at Apple had time to review the “enhanced logs" I sent them yesterday in real time (once before, once after the unpair/re-pair maneuver, each time including an ECG recording attempt within the 10 minute interval immediately before transmitting the logs).

Uploading the logs took a surprisingly long time, which the support tech blamed on the quality of my connection. I don’t know whether he meant between watch and phone or between phone and router), so I did an OOKLA speedtest from my phone (my call was handled by my Wi-Fi router rather than the cell network). The SpeedTest results were nominal for my ISP and router (640 mbits/sec DL, 25 mbits/sec UL). So, I’m not sure what he meant by “connection quality."

The tech devoted probably an hour of his time to this encounter, with him calling ME back after appropriate intervals for the logs to upload, and provided me email and text contact information to report additional information. I’ll use my own watch for my trip, and my replacement should be available when I return mid-week.

The one bit of sad news is that the replacement watch “may” arrive with a disabled O2 saturation sensor (what I’ve read is that Apple has disabled it on Series 9 watches, but he told me it might or might not be on the Series 7 replacement that will be sent to me.

As others have stated, that’s typically what most ISPs promise. I think FIOS, on the other hand, promises SYMMETRICAL download and upload speeds
