Hi

Sorry to hear of your experience.?

I have successfully used Cult of Mac dot com digital deals to purchase 2019 and 2021. I have also used JoyWarp.com. No price differences I could determine.?

Joy warp code wasn’t accepted once, I have used them about 5 times, but their service was good at getting a fresh code.?

The site was up enough for me to make a purchase, but has had technical difficulties ever since. They have been overwhelmed to respond to support requests, and have had a change of management since February. But they have time to send out marketing emails. They have only auto responded that they are overwhelmed, but otherwise not made any attempt to resolve my problem. My guess is that it is a one man, part-time operation, and less than legit.

What they sent be instead of a purchase license for Office 2019 for Mac, was a (subscription) license for Office 365, which will not run on my Mac running Catalina.

Computer and monitor…both currently on sale. I can’t tell you how long both sale prices will last.

Apple Mac mini MU9D3LL/A Desktop Computer, Apple M4, 16 GB, 256 GB SSD, Silver
$579

This is an online-only price.

You will need to add a mouse and keyboard to the above. I can make recommendations, if you like.

YEYIAN ODRAZ 27-inch IPS Panel HDR 4K UHD Slim Bezel PC Gaming Monitor 3840x2160, 1 Billion Colors, Low Blue, 300cd/m2, 1000:1, 60Hz, 5ms, 16:9, 178°, G-Sync, FreeSync, DP/HDMI/USB, Speakers, VESA, Tilt
$170

You might want to add external stereo speakers and a web-cam to the above. I can make recommendations, if you like.

They are amazing, aren’t they?

I bought my mom one of their folio cases. It was beautiful, and only about $15!

It’s a shame that it’s likely that soon we won’t be able to purchase from that source and get such great prices.

Re: Mac & Monitor

For that kind of casual use the obvious choice would be a Mini. Frankly, any silicon based Mac mini would do but if money is not a major ?issue, I'd recommend the latest M4 base model. She won’t need anything better for many years. Otherwise go for a refurb. Any M1 to M4 with 16GB of RAM and 500GB+ hard drive is more than enough for most tasks.

As for monitors, pretty much any name brand that fits the size parameters she wants. I personally prefer a very large monitor so I use 4K televisions. This gives you both resolution and size for very cheap. I use a 50” 4K that I purchased for $350. Again, for much less, any name brand, HD resolution (1080p) computer monitor of the size she likes will do. You can find used for under $100. Frankly, they pop up on Freecycle for nothing periodically. I’ve given away three 26” Dells recently. Sorry I no longer have spares.

Almost all monitors and televisions have HDMI connections now, but double check. And you are better off sticking to standard resolutions. I’d recommend either true HD (1920x1080) or UHD (3840x2160). UHD will be a TV, not a computer monitor but TVs work fine as computer monitors as long as gaming is not your intention, in which case you need to be more careful about latency and refresh frequency.

Cheers,

Personally, I like Finder searches, so I haven’t found a need yet for 3rd party search apps. ?If you know what you are doing, Finder searches can be very complex. ?

In 16 years I’ve only had to manually reindex my drive once. ?Perhaps I’m just lucky that it was that infrequent. ?I don’t know. ?That was back when my boot drive was an HDD, so yes it was slow. ?But I ran it overnight, so it didn’t impact me very much. ?System upgrades can cause a lot of reindexing, but if you do them later in the day, then it can again take place overnight,

Rather than just mentioning reindexing, I posted that article’s link, because it includes two (2) other possible solutions to the problem. ?

BTW, I posted it before Jim’s post; I wouldn’t have done so after his.

The problem I described is tied to Hotmail / Outlook.com accounts. It seems many were attracted?to the freeware Hotmail accounts and later Outlook.com accounts. Primarily they were free and reliable. Many forgot when they input personal information to register the account. Later, should a disruption occur (e.g., lost password, change in relationship status, etc.) the only information Microsoft has to validate your account is the information you provided. For some, that information may be quite old. Microsoft has taken so many hits for security, you either do it their way?or you lose the accounts.?

These steps will help guide you when filling out the account recovery form.

Luckily for me, I don’t have Les’s problem, but I’m curious. Are you saying that if one is using Outlook as one’s mail client but for some reason loses the ability to verify the account with MS, that one will lose his/her email repository. Is it at least possible to retain it, searchable, on one’s own device(s)?

Thank you for the response, I appreciate the suggestions.?

I can no longer receive emails throuhg the Apple Mail app only through a web browser. I get no error messages.

My main issue in updating the OS is that ?I need to run 32 bit applications - as a UK pensioner I cannot afford to replace my machine and all my main programmes - Quark, Indesign, Photoshop, etc – so I am limited to one more upgrade to 10.14 which I understand would not be enough to hep the mail issues.

I guess I have to hope Santa will bring a new machine and all the apps I need!

But thank you for your thoughts

Why not update the 2015 to Monterey? I have a MBA 2015 that runs Monterey well. You may experience less browser related issues.

I also run an Outlook.com account in Outlook 365 and Apple Mail on the 2015 with no problem. I can also run the latest versions of Brave and other browsers should I need to view my mail on the web.
