Re: Vision Pro: I'm curious what others think about it

I agree (about the current product), but here’s some thoughts about where it *might* be going.

I’m really surprised at how much reviewers complain about the price. It’s almost like saying, “I’d buy a Mac Studio and Display, but together they shouldn’t set me back more than $750.” Apple has never “bargain-priced” its hardware, and they’re not going to start now. The thing is NOT a peripheral, it’s an entire computer AND display(s). And, just because the company’s been working on it for 10 years doesn’t mean that experiences and disappointments voiced by early adapters won't lead to (pretty rapid) software updates and additions. But I don’t see it getting much cheaper.

My own guess is that what will blossom and explode quite quickly will be 3D entertainment. Imagine taking a lap at Monaco in 3D in Hamilton’s Mercedes Ferrari!. I’m sure Apple could add centrifugal acceleration sensors/effectors for, say, $199 ?.

I emerged with my wallet undiminished, but VERY impressed nevertheless. I found it, as a prototype, VERY seductive. If the library of 3D movies grows rapidly, my wallet MIGHT be in jeopardy. If I had an iPhone 15 Pro (capable of creating 3D videos…) ? ? ? ?ditto.

But, I also found the Vision Pro vaguely threatening. Few among us would deny that, more than any other device possessed by ordinary citizens, the iPhone has transformed the very way we live, even while it’s created legions of restaurant goers, subway and commercial flight passengers, and perhaps even isolated glacial mountain lake visitors, who stand or sit ignoring companions, staring at that little screen. The risk of even worse happening once the nits and bugs are cleaned up and the device’s total weight and total price are reduced, is truly scary. It is a TREMENDOUSLY isolating experience to use one.

Any similar or differing opinions?

Is there a way to synchronize their names, colors, and effects across apps that have access via my Apple ID.

I’ve not used the Reminders app much (putting most items that would work well there into my Calendar instead), in part because I’ve found Reminders hard to use.

For example, just now an incoming email reminded me that Netflix’s engaging series “The Drive to Survive” returns February 23 (ostensibly to chronicle perhaps the LEAST engaging F1 series in recent memory (unless you have sibs or cousins named “Verstapen).”

When I open the Reminders app from the Finder, NO interface offering to create a new reminder is available!
If I could get that to happen, and even better, if I could find a way for the same flag to mark mail, notes items, reminders, and perhaps even others in the same way, it would be what finally gets me to make use of them.

I didn’t remember making any such suggestion, but searching my email archives I discovered a post wherein I complained about suddenly having to deal with an entire QWERTY keyboard on the tiny face of my watch. Bob suggested trying that stylus and then followed up with a report that it actually worked.

Impatient, I did both, and my iPhone Control Center now pings my watch!

One of the main reasons I HAVE the “plus cellular” version of my Apple Watch is because I sometimes forgetfully leave home without my phone. The sound quality of phone conversations on my watch isn’t fantastic, but far better than the “no ability to make calls at all because I left my phone at home.”

I DO religiously strap my watch to my wrist each morning, but my wife’s watch (also “plus cellular”) is a less faithful companion for her. But either sibling should be able to find the other!

Thanks AGAIN!

Thanks, Jackie AND Pat for those prompt replies. Jackie, your devices are one generation earlier than mine, so confirmation that you can ping YOUR watch from your phone is very helpful. Apple support has given me at LEAST 2 cumulative hours of telephone support time related to swapping out my old watch which could no longer record an ECG. Some of their web support documents about handling the swap for watches that function independently as phones are less than clear, but I think I did everything right.

Jim, I still have the Ping My Watch choice in my Control Center.?

I use a Gen 6 Apple Watch (A2291) using WatchOS 10.3.1, and an iPhone 13 ProMax using iOS 17.3.1.

The feature works on my AW9 ?and iPhone 15 Pro as it has on all models since it was introduced. ?If the Ping my Watch feature isn’t showing up in the Control Center choices, it might be time for a call to Apple support. ?This is the Apple instruction I followed:

Ping your Apple?Watch

You can use your iPhone with iOS?17 to help you find your Apple?Watch if it’s nearby.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Control Center, swipe down, then tap?the Add button?next to Ping My Watch.

  3. When you want to ping your Apple?Watch, swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone to open Control Center, then tap?the Ping Apple Watch button.

Note:?If you have more than one Apple?Watch, the sound will play on the watch that’s selected in All Watches in the Apple?Watch app on your iPhone.

You can also use??to play a sound on your Apple?Watch.

I use Excel, the rest of office I could do without. I don’t think MS Office is the cause of the problem. I think iCloud did not like working with macOS 10.7.5, but there is no way to prove it. Also Office suddenly stopped acknowledging y product key,?causing other issues.

Mail, rebuilds its files, since I use IMAP.?I have some old files archived on my old Mac,?along with some email that is stored on the old Mac, no longer in the Mail server. I’m not worried about prefs, as I don’t mind going thru them to reset. I use it as a time to review and reset. I found that many of my needs have?changed since I retired. Since I crossed the 64-bit only line, I have to install or upgrade?several apps. Some are no longer being developed, so need replacement.

I’ll rename both Users, and then hold onto the old one for a bit.

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate it.
