Have you updated to Catalina? Check on Disk Utilities, if you have, for changes.

Then erased the external drive. Did so quickly. Formatted as suggested. Now tried to backup using CCC to the external. Get message that it cannot do that as it has no Mac OS. I have used CCC for some years without a problem. Using disk utility I can¡¯t find anything related to scheme.
