Jonathan,

My last iMac lasted about 8 years. I never had an issue or needed a repair. I have always bought AppleCare whenever I purchase a new device. This is the first time Apple has offered to extend the policy.

If you are attached to that device and want to be sure you won¡¯t prematurely be without it, $60 isn¡¯t that much either.
I probably will not purchase the extended care - it would be $60 a year.

Another thing is that you don¡¯t use yours for work much, so even if the machine is getting a little long-in-the-tooth, it should still meet your needs for years to come. In that case the $60 might be worth it.
When the computer gets ¡°long in the tooth¡± I know I will get a new one - even though my wife will groan. ?

The only repair I remember having to do on an iMac is replace a hard drive. That was two computers ago.

Thanks for your input.

Harry

Good luck with your decision, Harry.

It depends what kind of control you¡¯re looking for. If you use your own router, you might be able to keep miscreants out of your devices with a good firewall, but the ISP can always monitor all your traffic at their switch. Strong privacy apparently requires a VPN and maybe even Tor.

Of course there¡¯s a back door known to the ISP. That¡¯s how they do remote upgrades and support. Who knows what else they can do through their back door?

No, I'm thinking locked down means that they have locked me out of seeing things like activity over the modem etc. Out of ignorance, I wonder what could be built into the modem for snooping activity and selling to the highest bidder.

I have the Arris ONT (Optical Network Terminal) required by AT&T. It has a WiFi router built in. I put it in pass through mode and connected a Synology router downstream for WiFi and Ethernet. This should mitigate possible backdoors in the Arris box. The only problem I had doing this was AT&T gives almost no documentation about the device, so I had to find it on the Arris Website using the part number.

Passkey

I just ordered an item off the internet, on my wife¡¯s iPad. When I got to payment since there was no ApplePay I choose PayPal. Since I had never used her devise PayPal ask to use PassKey on another device, yes. I picked up the iPhone it did two face scans & PayPal opened on her iPad & completed the purchase. That was so cool!

Hi John,

?

I found this info on your error message. I didn¡¯t realize until reading these 2 articles that with the newer OS/File structures there is a hierarchy to how you should run Disk Utility.

Also read elsewhere, that if problems persist, you may need to do a clean install of the OS. Seems this happened to a lot of folks after the Sonoma upgrade.

Hope it is something Disk Utility will be able to resolve for you.
