Re: Offer from T Mobile and AAA

I've got T-mobile, because of the Magenta plan (which is a polite way of saying a 'silver' plan for old folks).

It's pretty good. Mine was $35/month including all fees, with no change in price, ever. So.... when my plan disappeared from T-mobile and I was offered an upgrade, I said 'no'. So... still $35/month inclusive, including Netflix and (maybe Hulu) and (never used) AAA for a year.

Coverage is fine. From what I know, T-mobile uses AT&Ts towers where it doesn't have its own.

In today’s mail I received an offer from AAA to transfer to T Mobile and pay only $30 per line per month (not including fees & taxes). Currently I have AT&T and am paying $91.00 per month for two lines and that includes fees.

What service do you use and are you happy with your service?

I haven’t investigated the offer yet but wondering if this is truly a savings how long will it last? Will prices go up in 6 mos. or a year?

We sometimes go out of country - if you use T Mobile and go out of country what is there charge for being out of country?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Offer from T Mobile and AAA

I have used tmobile for years. Worked well in new zealand,Ireland, and Scotland. No extra charge. 10 per month on vet plan. Heading to ecuador next month and it's 5.99.

I went to look at DOCSIS 3.1 modems, and they are pricier ($150 to $200!) than I expected ($60). Clearly I haven't bought a modem in many many years.

So... should I take the free modem (which might be a gateway) or should I buy a modem? Any tips/arguments either way would be appreciated.

I have the Arris ONT (Optical Network Terminal) required by AT&T. It has a WiFi router built in. I put it in pass through mode and connected a Synology router downstream for WiFi and Ethernet. This should mitigate possible backdoors in the Arris box. The only problem I had doing this was AT&T gives almost no documentation about the device, so I had to find it on the Arris Website using the part number.

They've just reintroduced residential fiber service on AT&T's lines, with 300mbps service for $20 less than Spectrum's rate and gigabit service for the same rate as Spectrum's 300mbps, with free installation and hardware. (And actual local support.) I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm fully intending on it. If you need to stay with Spectrum, I'd buy a modem. I'm seeing horror stories lately about Spectrum's non-standard pricing deals evaporating after a couple of months and people having to spend long stretches on the phone with them to get them back.

[1] The account just came out of hibernation and they've jacked up the speeds. I've tried for the better part of 3 hours to get things to work, but the best speed I can get is ... 0.07 Mbps for downloads on those few times I can even get the speedtest to load. Yow.

I’m surprised the article doesn’t make a big deal about what I think is the biggest addition to Messages: RCS. For years this has been my major annoyance with Messages because all the Android phones support the open RCS protocol for messages and not Apple’s proprietary protocol for Messages. When Apple rolls out the new Messages with RCS we’ll finally be able to sent attachments such as photos to Android phones. It’s not clear if Apple will support encrypted RCS messages.

Of course support for RCS is of little interest outside the USA because almost all the rest of the world uses WhatsApp for messaging.

It isn’t "keeping you straight." It was definitely a good article. It’s just that I try to keep paid subscriptions to a minimum, and surmised there might be a few others that don’t pay for the expensive Apple News on here.

Keep finding the good stuff for us, though, John.
