to buy or not to buy a modem

Hi all,

Spectrum (the internet provider where my mom lives) told me today that my modem was no longer supported [1]. It's an Arris SB6141, which is DOCSIS 3.0.

They say they will let me have a modem to use for free, but I'm a bit worried that it really a gateway, and I don't want them to have their backdoors in the router. So... I went to look at DOCSIS 3.1 modems, and they are pricier ($150 to $200!) than I expected ($60). Clearly I haven't bought a modem in many many years.

So... should I take the free modem (which might be a gateway) or should I buy a modem? Any tips/arguments either way would be appreciated.

Bill

[1] The account just came out of hibernation and they've jacked up the speeds. I've tried for the better part of 3 hours to get things to work, but the best speed I can get is ... 0.07 Mbps for downloads on those few times I can even get the speedtest to load. Yow.

I¡¯m surprised the article doesn¡¯t make a big deal about what I think is the biggest addition to Messages: RCS. For years this has been my major annoyance with Messages because all the Android phones support the open RCS protocol for messages and not Apple¡¯s proprietary protocol for Messages. When Apple rolls out the new Messages with RCS we¡¯ll finally be able to sent attachments such as photos to Android phones. It¡¯s not clear if Apple will support encrypted RCS messages.

Of course support for RCS is of little interest outside the USA because almost all the rest of the world uses WhatsApp for messaging.

It isn¡¯t "keeping you straight." It was definitely a good article. It¡¯s just that I try to keep paid subscriptions to a minimum, and surmised there might be a few others that don¡¯t pay for the expensive Apple News on here.

Keep finding the good stuff for us, though, John.

The usual suggestion (witch isn¡¯t helpful) is that anti-virus programs are not necessary on a Mac. In fact, they often cause trouble.?

Market Cap

At least for awhile Apple is the most valuable company measured by Market Capitalization.

Both Apple & Microsoft are going to most likely bow to Nvidia.

Elon is freaking out, saying Apple doesn¡¯t have a clue what they are doing & he will not allow any of his employees to have an Apple device while at work! Sour grapes as Apple didn¡¯t go with his AI.

That means greater sales this year in Apple¡¯s high-profit hardware categories and Wall Street is clearly PUMPED about that.
