Mark all pins "not connected" ?? 8
It is rather tedious marking 90 pins of a 100 pin package as "no connection" so I was wondering if there was a way to automatically mark them all as such in one action ?? Perhaps a plug-in ?? I tend to design a basic circuit first (MCU + crystal, psu, etc) and then add functionality in stages, periodically running the ERC. There doesn't seem to be a way of suppressing the "no connection" warnings in the ERC, so I find it easier mark them all and then to remove "no connection" indicators as I add functionality. Is there a way to do this ?? Regards, Dave

Where to put 3D model files for footprints 4
Hi, I have download a PCB footprint from a vendor that includes a STEP (.STP) file of the part. I have added the footprint to my personal footprint library, but where can/should I put the 3D model file in order that it not be overwritten by future KiCad installations? I use KiCad nightly releases and I that see KiCad defines the path KICAD6_3DMODEL_DIR, but I suspect anything I put there might get blown away by a new install, which for me would be every day (max.). Any thoughts? Thank you.

Open Symbol or Footprint directly 6
Hi, is it possible to open a symbol file or footprint file directly in the symbol/footprint editor? For example I'd like to click on those files from my file browser (KDE Dolphin) and open them in the editor directly without having to open a project first. regards, Konrad

Kicad library management for both 5 and upcoming 6 version. 15
Hi all, I'm basically new to Kicad. I used it a couple times years ago but never really completed anything, youtube wasn't as big then. I'm currently working with 5.1.10. I suspect 6 will be coming shortly so I'd kinda like to start learning now. That way I have a good strategy when 6 comes, given it works similar to my current version. Also, I use Linux, Gentoo, for my OS. I kind of want to manage my libraries the same way it is done with the default libraries. I'm not sure I understand how that is done or if it is possible for me to do the same in my /home directory. This is a sample of the OS installed libraries. -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6637 Dec 19 2020 4xxx.dcm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 469 Dec 19 2020 4xxx_IEEE.dcm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 79005 Dec 19 2020 4xxx_IEEE.lib -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 60379 Dec 19 2020 4xxx.lib -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 24191 Dec 19 2020 74xGxx.dcm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 41240 Dec 19 2020 74xGxx.lib -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28975 Dec 19 2020 74xx.dcm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1043 Dec 19 2020 74xx_IEEE.dcm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 144816 Dec 19 2020 74xx_IEEE.lib -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 179147 Dec 19 2020 74xx.lib I notice that there seems to be two files for each one. One is a .dcm and one a .lib. That said, in ones I download and install in my /home directory, sometimes it is a .kicad_mod file. Sometimes it is a .mod file. Sometimes it is like above. I think the difference is some may be for the version 6 of Kicad which is why I have trouble getting them to work. Can someone confirm that if I'm right? My biggest question tho. Can I create a directory called say kicad_library and just keep adding files to that and them be recognized when it reloads the libraries? Right now, I add them manually with one set of symbols or footprints for each entry. I would like to be able to just copy them to a directory and be done. How to do that exactly is something I'm not sure of tho. I'm also not sure if I should leave it as is until version 6 comes out and then set it up so that going forward, I'm doing it a easy way. Eventually, I hope to have quite a collection of symbols and footprints. At least the things I use anyway. I realize that having a large collection around leads to longer loading times. I restart once a week whether it needs it or not. I do that after I do my weekly updates. So, Kicad is running pretty much all the time. I'm sort of thinking that if I just place the files in the directory, it will work. Thing is, I don't want to do that and make a mess of things. Also, I only have a few projects. Changing now even if I have to go back and reselect footprints and such would be easier now than when I have lots more projects to update. That is if it isn't best to wait until version 6 and then tackle the beast. By the way, I put things in some odd places when I started too. I knew very little then, not much more now either but should have done better. Hindsight. Bites us every time. lol Thoughts?? Dale :-) :-)

Simple cap charge simulation and ground question 4
Hello, I¡¯m a new Kicad user trying to simulate a simple cap charge circuit with a DC source, a resistor, and a cap. Where does the ground symbol come into play? Does Spice need one? I¡¯m using the pspice model for ¡°0v reference potential for simulation¡±. I get the following error: ¡°Pin connected to other pins, but not driven by any pin¡±. Power input of component #GND0101 is not driven (Net 10) See enclosed screen shot. Thanks. Ken Cone kencone@... K7BXI

Addon for running FreeRouter ?? 4
Hi, There used to be a plugin to export the pcb, run autorouter, and then when autorouter closed, re-import the pcb all as a single function. Sadly it no longer works with the latest Kicad - has anyone ported it ?? and if so where could I find it ?? Best regards, Dave

SPICE library management #gettingstarted
Does KiCad have a recommended path location in which to store SPICE library/model files of components or circuits? I'm starting to use KiCad's SPICE simulator and I'm not convinced that keeping individual ,LIBs in the various project directories is the best way to go (although it works). Anyone have a recommendation or experience to advise? Thanks.

DRC options page ... 9
In the DRC "options" page, if I set a box to "green" (No error or warning) when I "clear" the flags and run the DRC it still throws the same number of errors. This is in the schematic editor. In fact if I set ALL to "green" I still get the same errors. I assume this is not normal. Do others see this ? Running 5.1.10 under win 7 x64 Regards, Dave

Vias connecting to a copper plane 4
Hello, I am routing a board where I need to use a standard via to connect to an interior copper plane. KiCad makes this connection (between the via and the plane) without any radial spokes or any other features - it seems to connect the entire periphery of the via hole to the plane. Is there any way to change this behaviour (should it even be changed?) or is it perfectly standard? I only ask because other 'through hole' connections to the plane feature options to configure how this is done but I don't see anything for vias? Maybe they're not necessary and/or I am missing them. Would welcome more info. Thank you.

Who do you use to get your boards made? 38 #fab-house #pcb-manufacture
PS: OSH Park is happy to accept your KiCad file... you don't have the extra step of exporting to one of the more widely supported formats. If you have advocated for other fab services, maybe you could update your recommendation with the situation elsewhere? === Okay... I've finished my work with KiCad... now how do I turn the files into an actual PCB? For my wants (simple!), OSH Park do a good job... the product is good, I can order as few as three, and the ordering process is brilliantly arranged. More at... Review and how to- KiCad to actual PCB service ( http://www.arunet.co.uk/tkboyd/ele1bps.htm ) Others? (Maybe say a word about what you need the service for... a few bare boards for a hobbyist? More than that?)

Using SnapEDA ... 3
I have installed the SnapEDA plugin but it seems only to be available in the PCB Editor. I can download and place a footprint but for the life of me I cannot see how to place the schematic symbol. How do you access the SnapEDA symbols ?? Regards, Dave

[Q] Is there Auto-routing in v5.1.10 ?? 10
Hi, I have just downloaded and installed the above version but I saw a warning that Autorouting was removed in v4. What is the status of this? I am very keen to use this facility (having got used to having it in DipTrace). Best regards, Dave

Importing schematics from other tools ??
Is there a way to import a DipTrace schematic into Kicad ??? I'd hate to have to re-enter a huge (for me) design again. Best regards, Dave

Hello, I just register to become a member. Presently, I'm just trying the mail address received by mail during the registration. Just to check if it works well. Exploring different forums (using KiCad forum to learn or exchange), I do not know if groups.io is of different purposes, part or apart of KiCad forum ? Sorry for the inconvenience. GerardFX

Apple M1 Kicad environment(s) 2
Has any one had success with a solid Kicad install on an Apple M1 MBP? I'm looking at full freecad compatibility, probably running under a virtualization environment like Parallels (no VirtualBox for M1 news at all) and Ubuntu. If so, version numbers would be helpful. Thanks!

Can't Install Kicad - Unmet Dependencies 6
Hi, I'm trying to install Kicad on an Ubuntu 20.04 LTS machine. Following the (command line), instructions here: https://www.kicad.org/download/ubuntu/ The installation fails with: Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies. kicad : Depends: libocct-data-exchange-7.3 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libocct-foundation-7.3 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libocct-modeling-algorithms-7.3 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libocct-modeling-data-7.3 but it is not going to be installed Depends: libocct-ocaf-7.3 but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I have run Kicad on this PC before. In fact I don't recall uninstalling it, but it's definitely no longer on the PC. Anyone know what is wrong? Regards, Robert.

Zone fill eludes me. 5
Thus far, kicad is resisting my efforts to visibly fill any part of a GND zone covering almost all of the front copper layer. The hatched edges remain the only sign of its presence. When I click the DRC check icon, with "Refill all zones before DRC" ticked, clicking "Start DRC" lists "Refilling all zones¡" as the third report line - but even after clicking OK, the zone remains empty. A left click on "Zones" in the right menu, followed by a right click, then Zones->Fill_All, also does nothing. The alternative, hitting 'B' as the last step flashes a small window with some entry fields for a fifth of a second or so, too briefly to know what it might have been. In any event, it also does nothing perceptible. I've spent a couple of evenings learning kicad, which is so much easier to befriend than eagle, but this one tiny thing has devoured an entire evening - without success. I'm running version 5.0.2+dfsg1-1, as that's the latest package available for devuan beowulf. Is this a known deficiency in that version, necessitating a build from source to upgrade, or am I just not holding my mouth right? Erik

Zone fill eludes me. SOLVED 2

When all else fails, delete the zone and do it again. This time double click to close the box. This is my first encounter with kicad, and it was generous enough to draw the zone when closed with a single click, but not enough to fill it. So it was a case of not holding my mouth right. Familiarisation problems usually are. Thanks for helping me acclimatise to the new tool. It's certainly easier to get going than eagle, so far. I admittedly haven't created a custom component yet. Regards, Erik P.S. Apologies for formatting of posts; I'm stuck on an egregious webmail thingy until I work out how to satisfy my ISP's authentication requirements for postfix.
