My question is, what program do you use to print a "postscript file"
once you have saved it to disc.
I tried ghostview on win 98 but it doesn't operate, just runs an
invisible window and stalls.
Thanks, Tony
I am not sure I can be much help because I run Linux. On Linux you just open the .pd file with the file manager and click on print. Alternatively from the command line just type

lpr filename.ps

And away it goes to the default printer.

Ghostscript is an integral part of printing on many linux distros so printing postscript files is handled automatically. Ghostscript and Ghostview in their 'pure' form are a bit outdated and on my systen ghsotscript is replaced by espgs (ESP ghostscript) whcih is designed to operate closely with CUPS (common unix printing system) to provide up to date postscript support to non postscript printers. See for details.

Unfortunately I do not know what the equivalent is in Windows or even if it is as advanced as the Linux support for postscript. This suprises me as postscript is a mature and much used format.

Overlapping Objects

Hi,
I placed a moire over a pad. Now I can't select the pad as Kicad

Yes I can move the moire and then edit the pad, then move the moire
back again, but is there a way for such a situation ?

Thanks,

On my system if I just print a PCB it comes out too small so I could
use a factor (a bit less than your 1.577) to make the printed size
correct. However, I do not need to do this. Instead I PLOT the PCb to
a postscript file then print this file and the scaling is done
automatically. The same poscript file prints at the right size on my

I have uploaded the last stable version of Kicad.

Because archive files was very larges, now there are 2 smaller files:
kicad-yyyy-mm-dd? (kicad only)
doc_components-yyyy-mm-dd (Pdf datasheets only).

have a look to README.txt for more details.

HPGL plotting / scaling

R. Michael Sharkey

G'Day all,

I'm been having trouble plotting schematics from KiCAD. I have a Roland DXY
flat bed plotter which fits 11" x 17" paper and uses HPGL.

First, whenever I plot a schematic, I have to specify an offset in order to
fit on the paper without loosing about 2 inches on the bottom. The plotting
dialog allows me to enter the offsets, and this works great so long as the
natural size of the drawing is 11" x 17" or less. However, when I want to
plot a drawing who's natural size is larger than 11" x 17" inches (which is
often the case), and I check off the size that I want to plot in the plotting
dialog, then I enter my offsets into the plotting dialog, they are accepted
but then they appear to be ignored, as the drawing, in this case, will
always be be plotted on the paper with an offset which looses about 2 inches
of the drawing. This only happens when I'm scaling the drawing down to fit my
paper.

Oh yeah, and I've downloaded and built the latest KiCAD from source on Linux
and I still have the problem. Anybody else have any experience like this? Is
there a workaround?

Maybe I'll have to open up the KiCAD source and have a look myself, I was
hoping to avoid that.

Or, does anyone know of an Open Source HPGL manipulating program that would
allow me to apply offsets to an HPGL file?

3D Modeling Help

Like many others, I'm very new to Ki-Cad. So far it is impressive with
what you can do despite its limits and bugs. Where I'm having the most
difficulty is with the 3D image editor. How do you draw a new package
when you have dimensions? The 3D modeler show grids, but little else.
My first package is a 28 lead MLF part that is just under 6 mm per
side. If I had a "monkey see, monkey do" procedure, I think I could
work out how to do most any other package.

Hi artlcarr.....

If you are new... maybe you're looking for tutorial about PCB design
rules, tips, glossarys, etc... I think this is the 'little more'that
you're saying. If this, visit this link
. In other way, to learn
only about Kicad, the Help files (or Doc) are enough.

Hello Artlcarr!

I disponibilized one mini tutor with a simple RS232 adapter in my site,
these is only in portuguese (sorry!) but, have many pictures, including
the tools to use, perhaps help you.

The tutor is basic, but, cover all steps from zero, schema to pcb.

Yes, instead of printing you have to plot
I had made a feature request to remove the pin bubbles once that pin
is connected to a wire, or a no-connection. That way the bubble could
act as a visual indication of unconnected pins.

Without the bubbles, the schematics will look clean & professional.

I Hope this feature gets included in the near future.

Best way is to start using Kicad to make a trial PCB, or even a
commercial PCB, and learn along the way (like most of us did)!

Unfortunately there is no tutorial as yet. However, there are over 100 members in the group so if you have any questions there is a cery good chance someone will know the answer.

I dont' believe there is anything like that currently. If you are completely new to PCB layout, then I suggest looking at tutorials for other layout programs. Most PCB programs I have used are similar enough so that any of thier tutorials would help with the others.
