Re: OT: PCB suppliers
Did you ever tried PCBWAY i chinese company? I used in the past to work with them for some boards and I found they are professional, have good prices and clean manufacturing. They perform several tests on the documentation you send and no way to proceed until everything seems correct. This is not, of course, the guarantee that all is perfect, but it is a pretty good start. Il giorno ven 13 set 2024 alle ore 08:51 Ian Bell <ianthompsonbell@...> ha scritto:

In both of those comments, I included links of explanation, so, if desired the unfamiliar topic may be looked up. I simply try and think in terms of the Groups.io? being fully international in scope and that a touch more time can improve universal understanding.

This is mean purely as a constructive comment. Bottom line is that I learned a couple more things today, and my day is just getting started.

Re: How to print a BOM?
You should use the provided BOM generators, or write your own. I recommend exporting BOM to csv, and opening it in Libreoffice. Then you can pretty print it. Re: How to print a BOM?
When you generate the BOM from eeschema, the dialog box lists a number
of BOM generator scripts. Did you pick one of them? I do have my own scripts if you are interested, but they date back to stone-age Kicad in that they use a tool called xsltproc. These days Kicad uses Python scripts. BTW, I use a pivot table to create a grouped BOM from a simple CSV list, as personally I found that better than trying to do the grouping in the script. Things may have improved in kicad since I got this working, but what I have works, so I'm not going to fix it! Re: OT: PCB suppliers
I too wanted to avoid Chinese manufacturers and I found Aisler to be the only cost effective PCB manufacturer in Europe. I had half a dozen or so different designs made by them, However, I had to persistent problems with their product, one of which is avoidable and the other is not. The avoidable one is that my PCB CAD happens to be set to include the board outline on all gerber layers. If you do this with Chinese suppliers the boards arrive as expected. If you do ti with Ausler then you get a very fine track around the periphery of the PCB on both the top and bottom layers. This is so fine it tends to come off. I avoid it by not including the board outline an all layers. The second problem is more serious. Aisler did not V-cut the periphery of the board. They obviously panelise the boards and then snap them off leaving small sharp pointy bits of PCB sticking out in all four board edges. Yes, you can file these off but they claim your board will be exactly as designed and clearly this is not the case. What makes it worse is that many of my boards are for plug-in use and the edges need to be smooth and straight. I tackled Aisler about this but all the said was they might offer V-cutting at a later date. So I stopped using them Cheers Ian On Thu, 12 Sept 2024 at 06:36, Anders via <anders.gustafsson=[email protected]> wrote:

How to print a BOM?
Clicking Tools->Generate_BOM->Generate landed me with the first XML file I've produced in over 40 years of computing, and I'm struggling with finding a Linux utility that can make something printable out of it. (Or readable, for that matter.) Firefox just displays the raw XML source text, as does LibreOffice. An "apt-cache search xml | more" has yet to ring any bells on what might make sense of the badly obfuscated BOM. Is there an easy way out of this cul de sac?? (E.g. plain text, postscript, or PDF?) It'd probably be similar to UK, I'm guessing. I've used them a few times over recent years, using Eagle and now Kicad, and the boards are always very good. The webpage has a gerber viewer, so you can check the lodged fab files. (Please don't ask me why that can be very useful indeed.) Their lowest price is reserved for boards under 10 x 10 cm. (That's 3.937 inches on a side, in the old money.) Erik |

For most PCBs, I use Eurocircuits. Their proto line will ship back to you in 3 days, which means you should get it in 4. If you have a business account with them, you get invoiced in 30 days, otherwise it's payment in advance. I've used them for more than 10 years. -- Regards, Tony? |
